Actually practically speaking the beret is only good for dress uniforms which means they probably should issue them to every troop being as an army is supposed to be egalitarian in nature. That's why they shave heads and have uniforms to begin with. I don't think they actually wear berets in combat situations as they aren't practical.
Of course whether a beret, a service cap, or some other uniform style is used now is more driven at generating new revenue for businesses that supply those items than for any practical functional or aesthetic reason. They change uniforms now more than the lead actress in a play changes costumes. The realm of sports clothing for fans of sports has slipped down that same slippery slope issuing all sort of special edition uniforms and such to pry money out of the pockets of the unfortunate fans that fall for that ruse.
In the UK Berets are worn with Barracks uniform (temperate) and Battle dress (Temperate) Berets are also regimental dress when wearing number 2s in several regiments.
I’ve alway thought the progression to berets was to imitate the European covers. But we will never know. Needless to say, Owen usually wears a beret. He is a sergeant.
I don’t see a lot of uniforms any longer after our local base closed. We still have some but not a lot. I love the old naval uniforms....=-)
That's a really nice image.
I suppose skin cancer and sunburns and the like aren't issues at for a society that technologically and biomedically advanced, are they? they can probably do things so that they only tan if they decide they want to, and it won't have any ill effects.
True.
The people in the future have a wide range of optionis available to protect their health and safety.. Body force fields eliminates risk of STDs (The ones that still remain), nasal shields will screen out disease, and pollutants and Nanites are utilized in creams for facial hair removal, and cancer isn't a fatal condition, but may involve multiple treatments to cure and an eventual brain transplant Diseases of the brain are perhaps the only thing that would make you inelligible for body transfer, so those are screened for at an early age and fixed with genetic 'patching' if the recipient can afford it.
There is unfortunately a high degree of pressure to get body mods, which usually involve a genetic splice. So body dysmorphia is high amongst young people. This is something Owen deals with a fair amount- as often one of the troops in his platoon will return from leave with a new mod.
Bodysplices range from legit, approved by your doctor, to visiting a vendor on the street for an injection in poorer clinics. The army will give some of them as a matter of course with your monthly vitamin shot and yearly health screening. I don't think they can do the melanin ones without consent but they will correct some conditions automaticallly with a splice whether you consent or not. Just like they give you your vaccine booster. They want healthy soldiers, and they will do everything they can to ensure soldiers are in good shape. Occasionally they go too far. There have been rumors sometimes the vitamins... aren't vitamins.
Owen's fair skin has earned him his share of ribbing from people all his life and he's grown immune to the teasing. He probably gets nagged for a melanin mod from every advertising bot, and army doctor he sees. He's second generation irish, and inherited his mother's nice alabaster skin. He knows if he gets a burn, the army will reprimand him for damaging military equipment so he likely sprays something on, daily before going outside. That doesn't stop the joking and the barracks ribbing. But Owen learned at an young age, not to be phased by teasing and to keep a cool head.
Boyd on the other hand has skin that's very new, and was popped in a body with skin optimized to be resistant, age, defying, and a nice permanent beach-boy-tan. He probably could go darker if he wanted, but its unlikely it gets any fairer.
One of the things Boyd really hates, is when people nag or tease Owen about his skin. Mostly because Boyd thinks Owen's white skin is beautiful...Boyd is usually easy-going but this is something guaranteed to irritate him.
Sounds like genetically engineered corn,. so careful, alot that is being classified as genetic diseases or more omninously, genetic weaknesses and genetic preferences but are actually genetic successes but modern medicine in it's hubris doesn't understand those genetic adaptations. Those sort of botched up human engineering feats then ruins quality of life for billions. That would be an interesting story, LOL, but only if restricted to paper or similar media.
Very true Boyd’s whole family is rather over-engineered whereas Owen’s being a blue collar working class family are basically gene-mod free. Although both Owen and his grandfather and Boyd have the chip implant that allow each to insert chips into their brains at the temple. In Owen’s case it runs his hud, Boyd’s chip and one personal slot for anything he wants which is usually an illegal chip made by his grandfather or an entertainment chip. All ncos get this upgrade. Privates usually have 1 slot.
The future is sort of like England during the war with Germany. Most people are involved in the war machine, certain foods are becoming rationed due to shortages for troops and those left behind have war work. 25 percent of the population is exempt from combat and those individuals usually are involved in rebuilding the population and support in some way.
Very sweet moment/pose for them!
Aww. Thanks.
Here's the reverse kiss pose I made. I decided to have Boyd sitting instead of leaning over standing but had a fair bit of trouble with the rim of the hot tub and the beach towel, which refused to lie flat. (Someone please make dforceable towels) . There is a side view which I will post tomorrow.
I was stoked to find a margarita in the Tiny house entertainment set. For some reason, margaritas are challenging to find!
Sounds like a ratehr bleak dystopian future you have made. How long has the war been going on and who are they fighting if you don't mind me asking?
Aliens.
There are actually several Aliens interested in earth but for different reasons. The official war starts when Owen is about 11-12. The first wave of aliens come every year and are a bit of a viking analogue. They arrive in the spring, raid several random cities and depart taking prisoners sometimes, to return next year. Those aliens succeed in uniting earth's government, as there is a lot of energy focused on detecting their arrival and preventing their attacks and this is when earth begins to gather world scientists into a secret conclave to build a defensive grid which will take about 10 years to build.
Earth government has actually been aware of alien presence since the 60's however... These are the first overt alien attacks they've encountered who are extremely hostile.
As unfortunate as those raids were, humanity is over-populated so a few towns a year are... Regretable sustainable.... But that's just the first wave.
The rest of the aliens are actually more subtle. They prefer weapons that are psychological, and to interfere with politics, government, and to follow whatever their agenda is. They use weapons that effect human emotions, and so while you might not die from that gas bomb, you might be stricken with fear, or happiness so you wont care when you are being defeated..
Both those two groups report to the ultimate aliens who run the show.
Humanity for the most part doesn't really understand the alien agenda. It seem spretty clear initially, but a lot of it is psychological or manipulative.
That's scary!
It is even more intriguing once the alien machinations are revealed. The raider aliens are really just a good distraction.
So I guess the war has been going on for about ten years when Our story begins. Since the us government has been building the array in secret with the collaboration of scientists from several countries for a while now the goal is sort of to fight the aliens long enough to erect the security grid and get it in place. The government hopes the grid will last a good while so they can regain control of the planet and build better ships... unfortunately at some point the grid will be discovered and that leaves it open for sabotage. There are only so many ways you can conceal building large structure orbiting earth in a technology advanced society. It requires a massive amount of security and deception.
it will unfortunately mean abandoning outside colonies on the moon, and any ships too far out as well as the space station which remains intact. Earths government has to face some hard choices to safeguard the planet.
I was watching a PBS local nature documentary for my state & they were capturing birds in nets & banding them. It would be an interesting render if alien build a net to catch traveling spaceships and such.
They did that on classic trek in the episode tholian web :-)
Oh, I keep meaning to buy the original Star Trek DVDs or BRs. They seem so quaint now.
They were good and ahead of their time in some ways. I watch them fairly often due to my sister liking the show. I think they are free to watch with amazon prime. .
Loving these poses, especially the one with them standing on the deck with their heads together, that is such a sweet image.
Aww, thanks. =-)
It was great to finally know some of the backstory on these guys. I always enjoy stopping by to see what they are up to, such a sweet couple.
Thanks summerhorse! Thanks for stopping in and letting me know you like it, =-)
I am relly liking the story angle you are setting up here SN. The whole double pronged attack angle is well thought out and looks like it would give a lot of options for story ideas. Looking forward to the further adventures of Boyd and Owen
Glad you worked out the posing, it looks really nice!
The alien agenda is interesting and mysterious as well as nefarious. I like the slow build. I like also that there isn't an easy explanation, no easy way to destory the enemy , and that humanity has their own secret plan which may or may not work.
Thanks!
Ah, want to redo something....
After Owen's disastrous last mission, Boyd takes it upon himself to help Owen recover, by being the thorough distraction he is.
I really love this house I bought at rendo. Its definitely a place the boys would want to live. I like the fancy porch.
The bouquet came in Feral Fey's pageant gear. It is for genesis, but still looks better than many other sets!
I like the little details, like the boots and bike on the porch. It looks like a nice house.
