  • Cute mouse yes, and for those wanting a rat ... little info I learned a few years back ... mice and rats can be born in the same litter. They are the very same animal. Adults under 4 inches are called mice, over 4 inches they are called rats.

@Daventoki, is there a mouse in that render?? I can't find him!

Wonderful renders all, especially the mouse in the teacup!

That's absolutely untrue. Somebody was messing with you. They're completely different species. Seriously. Google it. I've had pet rats and mice (and hamsters). They don't even look the same.

Agreed Miss Fish.  I had a pet rat, they might share the similar genomes but they are completely different species.  You don't see rats and squirrels mating, I used to call my little Nickie a squirrel without a bushy tail!  He was a gorgeous boy!

I love the new mouse and all its options. The number of poses you can create is basically limitless. I used it in my entry to the August New Users challenge:

Thought I couldn't hear you over the thunderstorm, little bugger?

I completely agree - it is just too cute (especially for a 'vermin' animal)!

... and I am not even a FAN of cute!  But I definitely want this one.  going to have to wait until funds allow though

Sorry, but you claim to not liking cute is negated by the fact you agree it's cute.

Not sure what the pig is doing here, especially as it's bacon, not cute.

Two mice. One shy and unassuming; one flamboyant and out there.

I think mouse 2 is telling mouse 3 (off camera): I tell ya, that farmer's wife has a cheese this big. Let's go get it.

Mouse 1 is thinking: I don't know; she has a knife...

    barbult, that is precious!

  • Wish there were clothes for AM's mouse, squirrel and fox. Then we could make renders akin to Redwall or Ghost of a Tale. Course we'd also need a rabbit, a mole, a rat and a badger (as we already have Joequick's Hedgehog for G8 female).

I've had all those and gerbils and some other rodents as well over the years. That 'somebody' was an author of an old book specifically about mice and rats. After I gave up on rats and mice, I got rid of the book. I have to agree they don't look much alike these days. I put that to a lot of selective breeding. Some may now be as different as pugs and pitbulls, but that does not make them a different species. Seriously, if one wants an image of a rat, make a few minor adjustments on the cute mouse and you'll have a cute rat ;-) And I think with a little persuasion [morphs] one could even make a guinea pig with it :-)

Appearances don't define species. Cocker Spaniels and Springer Spaniels could also be born in the same litter, all purebred. Height was the determining factor. Then over the years the sizes became better fixed and so now we don't expect Springer Spaniels being born to Cocker Spaniels and vice versa. The man at a pet store years ago called squirrels tree rats. I don't think he liked them lol ... but squirrels are not rats, both are rodents. He knew that, doesn't require a lecture on the matter. I wouldn't be at all surprized that little white rats would mingle with large white mice. Such do exist even to this day.

They share a commom ancestor. As populations of the originals moved into different environments, they adapted new habits and unique physiology in order to survive. Similar to what happened to big cats (lions, tigers, leopards and jaguars) and wild horses and wild canines; also the results of selective breeding among dogs as you mentioned to create breeds to meet specific tasks such as herding, hunting, retrieving, etc.

If by "selective breeding" you mean the same thing which led humans and chimpanzees to not being able to crossbreed despite having a common ancestor far down the line, then you are right. Seriously, rats and mice diverged millions of years ago, and the claim they can show up in the same litter is wildly inaccurate--they don't even have the same number of chromosomes. I am afraid the book you read was just plain wrong, as many things which have come to define our current understanding of the world tend to be--just look at the whole mess with "alpha" wolves and the way it's influenced some subcultures.

All mammals have a  common ancestor, yes including us humans.

Just like we share a lot of our DNA with the house fly.

No, but the fact that they're literally in a different genus from one another (mus vs. rattus) does.

I originally thought the mouse was too expensive to buy, but I felt more compelled to buy it because the creater participated in the conversation. I don't regret getting the mouse.
