Diomede - love the magic in your cyclopstritch render

UB - that gnarly tree looks fantastic

Headwax - Edison render looks great

mschack - colour of the butterfly really sings in that render

Misty - great render, apprentice looks the part

This is not a screengrab.  This is a Carrara render of objects made to look like the Carrara interface, the place where the magic happens.

I finally read more carefully and realized what you are doing.  Very clever, looks like the real deal.

Bunyip, thank you for the nice comment.

My original plan was to finally - finally - do something with Genesis 3 and Philemo's PBR plugin, but I got a rude awakening.  :(

Maybe I can do it with David 3 and Stephanie 3 (just to go to the other extreme).  Carrara artists are nothing if not flexible.

Awesome lighting and composition.  Great hands and face.  For some reason, I would like to see the raven on the right shoulder also be looking at the light.  But it is already fantastic without making any changes, and I'm sure that changes at this point are a major hassle.

You have completely nailed your own theme. :)

thanks very much! good idea on th er aven - I think I made him look at the viewere as a touch of the self reflexive!

    @Bunyip02, thank you!

Most of the lighting in this is from caustics - light reflected from the central sphere.

you get the blobby effect by reducing the caustic's filter size in the render room

    The Magic Duckling

I don't use genesis much because the kid is just under half a gig.... the soft light on yonder background is from a cone effect on a spotlight

I used the object pass to separate the kid from the background and add some dof

copied that background part and changed the parameter to 'screen' to get a bring the kid to the front

filled in the gap between his legs with pseudo clothes because it look weird

reduced his cheeckbones, his eyelashes and the wierd shadow on his cheekbone in post

    prepost and scene attached

HeadWax - Well done again, Andrew.  Love how you used post to adjust the shadows on the face especially the cheek.

    - after UB's comments

Headwax - Oh, wow, mesmerizing out of body effect.  Hat tip to UB for the suggestion.  Amazing execution

This one I rendered out the image then hid the foreground models and rendered again to combine in post in PSE20

I modelled all but Harpet the clown, the cow and terrain n tree.. also used Darts starry sky.

Stezza - killer klowns from outer space - hilarious concept - would not want to tbe the little green person who encounters

wip part 1, title: Delusions of Grandeur

    render is still baking smiley

the castle part.  have yet to add the bippity-boppity

    predatron set.

the lighting was a tough decision  went with2 shape rings,
1 is set to cast shadows. fromm 300feet in the Z
1 to surround the castle grounds.

set all the bump amplitudes to 100%

dunno why i went so many pixels, delusions of grandeur

Misty - Predatrons sets are amazing but are often too resource intensive for me.  Id say your decisions delivered

    The Magic of Mother Nature

    Headwax said:

Life … being able to feel the wind in your hair, to hold a child in your arms, to smell a flower, to walk on a beach, to be aware of the curve of the Earth, to run our fingernails over a rock older than the beginning of  time  –  all of these things, are Magical in one way or another.

What is magic about an old pine tree?

    Glad you asked!

Way up in the mountains on the high timberline
Lives a twisted old tree called the Bristlecone Pine
The wind there is bitter, it cuts like a knife
And it keeps that tree holding on for dear life

But hold on it does, standing its ground
Standing as empires rise and fall down
When Jesus was gathering lambs to his fold
The tree was already a thousand years old

My favorite version of the song:

The Bristlecone Pine lives up to 5000 years, and is the world's oldest (nonclonal) tree.  The resin is so dense that even when the tree dies (or parts of it die) it pertifies and lasts for several hundred more years.  A Bristlecone only grows in a harsh environment, as it does not compete well with other kinds of plants.  There are only two know places where it grows, both in the US.

    Carrara processes include:

    Plant editor

    Terrain editor

    Surface replicator (rocks)

    Text editor

    Ivy generator (Fenric)

    Realistic sky

Adjustments to the tree trunk were made in the modeling room.  Two distant lights were all that I used.  No HDRI or GI.  Ambient at 12%.

GMIC filters include Basic Color adjustments, Highlight Bloom, and Rain & Snow.

The antelope skull was an OBJ freebie.  The grassy clumps were RDNA if I remember correctly.

    No postwork.

UnifiedBrain - I am always amazed at what you achieve without postwork.  Thanks for the GMIC filter tips.  I just have never gotten the control of those features within Carrara the way you have.  Wow.

some wizard robes from daz, retextured and draped with VWD, rendered the background separately, was going to have some witches in the air still may or maybe not

    prepost attached

used tone mapping and colour pass to bring back the lost textures, also 'glare' parameter in scene instance in assembly room

    pre post

Headwax - but Edison stole credit for it!  Ignore that, I am just being an a$s.  This is a beautiful interpretation of the magic theme.

mschack - double kudos for the models and the shaders.  Excellent modeling.  Chosen surface materials help sell the realism of the instrument and butterfly.

Andrew - now that is the darker theme to balance the other entries of cuteness.  Excellent use of caustics.  Render times of caustics often make me pause, but worth it.

Thank you Stezza, UnifiedBrain, Headwax, and Misty for the comments on mine.  They are each only in a partial state of completeness and I've had to break down my main desk top for a move to Little Rock, Arkansas.  Will be trying to finish from my laptop.

I went back to page 3.  Sorry if I missed anyone, but I believe I commented on most images in the first two pages.
