Fatal Error on first attempt to open Daz Studio

  • Just went to Dell, looking for an AMD graphics driver, put in my Service Tag info... and it says the drivers are incompatible.... I'm at a loss.  The computer is refurbished and I'm wondering if somehow an incompatible graphics card was installed?

I tried an old version of Daz (pre duff files - - I was looking forward to being able to use those, but...better without that capability than without the program all together.) and bizzarly it won't open either... I can't find anyway to change my graphics card driver or CPU drivers (I don't care which I use, just that it CAN be used).

If I absolutely have to I can scrape together enough to buy another (refurbished) computer and if I do, I'll need the compatible specs to ask for and hope they have something like that.  Just giving up on using Daz isn't somethign I want to do.  I don't want to buy another computer either... but this is getting ridiculous.

NOT DELL.  Here is the AMD page you need.  https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-r7-series/amd-radeon-r7-200-series/amd-radeon-r7-250

Which of the 2 Windows 10 64 bit driver packages should I download  and are there instructions on how to install?
I'm not sure (it's been a couple of weeks), but i think I've been to this page before, or a similar one at AMD, and it said I had to go to Dell...

  • I went to the page Jestmart suggested and downloaded the thing for Windows 10 64 bit, which turned out to be software instead of drivers, though I'm assuming it including drivers?  Anyway, now when I try to launch Daz I get a pop up that says

"Daz Studio requires at least OpenGL Version 1.3.  Your machine currently provides PoenGL 1.1. Please contact your video card provider to get updated drivers or upgrade to an OpenGL 1.3 compatible graphics card."

I then tried the old version of Daz I have on disk (Daz Studio 4 - - dissappointed that I wouldn't be able to use duf files - - had my eye on a few products in the store here, but... I figured it was better than nothing and hoped it  would at least get me back where I was before this whole mess started) and I got the same thing... which doesn't make sense to me, since that copy of Daz Studio 4 is so old... My old computer which ran Daz Studio 4 just fine didn't even have a dedicated graphics card.

I downloaded the the OpenGL Extensions viewer (I hope that's okay and legit) and it says I have OpenGL 4.3, but only shows the Intel CPU information and not the AMD GPU...and the Daz pop up still says I have OpenGL 1.1, but need at least 1.3...
Does any of this make sense to anyone here - - ?  ...Because it sure doesn't to me.

  • I just did a search and found out that my AMD graphics card DOES support Open GL up to 4.6,  so Daz saying it needs at least 1.3 and I have 1.1 is puzzling, since both my GPU and CPU are well above 1.1...

Does anyone have any ideas on this?

I put in a support ticket over a month ago and not a peep.  I understand Covid has messed everything up, but I'd really like some functional version of Daz.  It still won't even open - - neither the latest, nor my attempts to use the earlier version that I had on my previous computer.  This is very frustrating.

  • Are you sure Daz Studio is set to use the AMD GPU for its display, not the Intel GPU built in to the CPU? If you right-click on the Windows Desktop and open the Catalyst Control panel I believe that should tell you (and let you change it to using the AMD GPU if it isn't).

I don't seem to have Catalyst Control Panel...
Also, although a search shows my version of AMD supports a higher OpenGL, within the AMD program it shows OpenCL, but under OpenGL is says "not available".

If Daz would work with the Intel CPU, that would be okay  -- my old Windows 7 computer didn't have a dedicated graphics card and ran Daz Studio 4 just fine.  I don't know if this is a Windows 10 issue?

  • Intel GPUs do not work well, in geenral, though some can cope. It does, however, sound as if there may be an issue with the driver isntalaltion if you don't have access to the AMD control panel applet

I have Radeon software, but it seems focused on display settings, not on setting for various programs and if the OpenGL has to be activated or something, I can't find where to do that - - it might be called something else? The software seems heavily game focussed and hte settign worded toward that, and I don't play games, so I don't know what setting that may be applicable to both games and Daz would be.

I just tried using an application called GPU-Z (found by searching about GPU problems) which is supposed to show you information about your GPU - - there are a couple of puzzling things.  First, it only shows the Intel... and second, it says it's OpenGL is 1,1, when it's supposed to be 4.3.
The AMD is supposed to be 4.6, but doesn't show up at all.... and in the Radeon software says "Not Available".

EDIT: I just found where to switch looking at GPU-Z to see the AMD card.  It says 1.1, too...

I'm not sure how to get it to the 4.3 and 4.6 respectively that these are supoposed to be...  the drivers are up to date from the companies.

This may be a BIOS problem where the computer is defaulting to the integrated graphics on the CPU.

That seems likely, since OpenGL 1.1 is what Windows 10 seems to default to... though my integrated grapphics is SUPPOSED to have opengl 4.3 - I have no idea why it's showing up as 1.1.  How do I change this? I'm not skilled at rooting around in hidden settings... which Windows 10 appears to have hidden deeper, so I'm afraid I need rather clear instructions. Any help is appreciated.

  • I tried Microsoft support... relatively promt by Daz standards (still haven't heard back from Daz from putting in my ticket over a month ago), but useless. "OpenGL isn't a Microsoft product",  Well, yeah, but it's Microsoft keeping OpenGL from working.

  • In desperation I tried a fix for openGL I found online... it included copying and pasting an openGL dll in a few places and it messed up my computer  -- nothing system restore couldn't handle, but it was a stupid thing to do.  I'm hoping someone has answers or I'll have to start a new thread asking about what to look for when getting a computer with the intention of running Daz, because I'm not taking "just give up" for an answer.
I'm learning a bit about OpenGL and Windows 10, though still don't fully understand it... but I've figured out that without support for OpenGL, Windows 10 defaults to 1.1?  ...And that either Microsoft blocks Intel or AMD drivers from installing OpenGL (or those companies don't include it when making Drivers for their products on Windows 10 machines), or simply doesn't recognize OpenGL in those drivers?  Do I have that right?

As you have found, here is what your reported hardware supports with latest drivers installed.

    Intel HD Graphics 4600

    • OpenCL 1.2
    • OpenGL 4.3

    AMD Radeon R7 250

    • OpenCL 1.2 (2.0)
    • OpenGL 4.6

That GPU-Z is reporting 1.1 and N/A for OpenGL suggests that you have fairly old drivers installed - Dell probably stopped updating them long ago and you will need to switch to the chipset manufacturer versions which requires completely uninstalling the Dell version to do or installing the new version will fail.

    1. Completely remove the Dell drivers for Intel video card
    2. Install the Intel video card driver (15.40.48.5171)
    3. Completely remove the Dell drivers for AMD video card using DDU
    4. Install the AMD video card driver (21.5.2)

So my problem is not deleting or uninstalling the old drivers first?  I did update drivers through AMD and Intel to no effect, but didn't uninstall the old ones first.  This may be a stupid question, but will I still be able to see the screen to do things without graphics drivers at all?   - That's why I hestitate to delete drivers...

For the Intel driver, yes. I'm not as confident about the AMD driver as you did not report an error from it's installer, but uninstalling first this way should resolve most issues anyway.

When you uninstall the video driver, windows will fall back to a default driver which supports a limited set of resolutions. It will probably not look correct, but will be usable. You will not see any difference when you remove the drivers from the one your monitor is not connected to (assuming you don't have a monitor on each).

I'd hoped you were right, but unless I need to adjust setting or something, you were mistaken.  I tried to launch Daz after uninstalling and installing the drivers you mention and the problem persists - the same OpenGL error. After all of that, the error pop-up says I still have OpenGL1.1 (which is as low as it can go).

Does GPU-Z still report the same?

  • I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Daz again, too, just for kicks.. Nothing.  I didn't expect that to work, since the OpenGL problem would still be there, but thought MAYBE a fresh install could work.. Short of buying another computer with specs that make it more likely to run (like NVidia instead of AMD graphics... and if at all possible, reverting back to Windows 7), which I'm loath to do since I'm not made of money (understatement), I don't know what more to do.
Maybe Mesa would help?  That's the only thing I haven't tried that I've read might work... I have no idea how that works and what little information I've found makes installing seem complicated... and it may, or may not, work.

GPU-Z says I have 1.1, though OpenGL Extention viewer says I have 4.3 and 4.6 - - but obviously inactive.

Does it look like DS is still crashing with the same error as before?

Can you post the driver versions currently running? (Any of GPU-Z, System Information, or Device Manager will report this)

I installed exactly what you post pointed to
    Intel Driver is: 20.19.15.5171/Win10 64
    AMD: 27.20.20903.8001(Adrenalin 21.5.2)DHC / Win 10 64

  • Daz never even truly opens - - I get a pop up error message saying I need OpenGL 1.3 but onl yhave 1.1 - -  I'll try to post the picture...

I asked because what was installed last is not necessarily what ends up running, but this is correct.

Richard asked earlier about changing a setting in Catalyst Control Center. Do you have that now?

It might also be under Radeon Settings - > Switchable Graphics... Not sure, I don't have an AMD card.

If I have it, I don't know where it is...  I'm not fond of how Windows 10 sometimes seems to hide things.  I'll try to download it.

Usually it will show up in the notification area/system tray or as an option if you right click on the desktop.

You could also try going to your BIOS / UEFI and disabling the Intel graphics or setting the primary to be the AMD (may be called Discrete).
