Do you know which version of DS the files were saved from?

     Daz Studio 4.0,3.47

I would hope that would be recoverable through the use of 4.5 then. The main thing is that the content directories need to still have the required content - in some cases there may be issues if the scene used soemthing that has since been updated to have only .duf format files (and you have installed the update).

Daz Install Manager seems to automatically install everything...  I downloaded the Daz 4.5, though my Daz Studio is still listed as 4.15 - - guessing those numbers refer to different things and 4.5 is part of the larger program or something like that?
Some files I can undertand may have changed...  but I would have expected errors loading content but the basic Genesis figure to load... with whatever morphs, .obj props or poser things(I think the figure in question has glasses made for poser) still attached... but nothing loads and I just get the error, like it's not finding the base Genesis figure?

  • 5 is smaler than 15 (remember that version numbrs are no decimals, they are four integers separated by dots - Major version.Minor version.Release.Build. 4.5.x.x was the first non-beta DS 4

Didn't know that -  -I thought it was decimals and that 4.5 was later than 4.15.  So - - 4.5 was between the 4.0 I'd used before and the current 4.15?  Good to know.

But that's beside the point in this problem...  I can't seem to open the old .daz characters/scenes.  I do have limited access to another computer that still has Windows 7 and have the old Daz 4.0,3.47 and all library files on a thumbdrive...  I could slowly and laboriously load the characters, write down all of their specs, and then try to replicate them in Daz 4.15... but that will be slow going and a lot of work - - even more if the way 4.15 works is dramatically differtent from 4.0,3.47 ...  Do you think that's the only option?

  • If you can open the scenes you could simply save Pose/Shaping/Materials presets which would let you rebuild (actually, a character preset would save both materials and shape). I don't think that Wearables were in the initial versions. Have you tried opening the scenes in 4.5?

Yes, I have tried opening the scenes in 4.5  -- they do not open and I get the type of error I mentioned earlier "An error occured while reading the file" ... and then in the log: "Error setting pointers while reading file" and "Exception: Memory Access Violation - Attempted to read memory at address 0x00000000"
I'm not sure what "setting pointers" means  -- could anyone clarify?  Is there a change in file locations I could do that could potentially fix the problem?

This thread seems to deal with my current issue... https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/31352/ds-4-6-can-t-open-ds-4-0-scenes-with-genesis
I'm still reading it and haven't seen a definitive solution - -  the closest I've figured out is that I COULD save the scenes on a differnet comuter running old Daz, IF I delete the Genesis figures from the scenes.... (I checked, props only scenes DO open), save those to thumbdrive, then replace the scenes in 4.15 - - and recreate the Genesis characters (after first writing down their specs) and then save in the newer duf format...  a lot of work, but less than having to recreate every background prop placement, too...

  • As I said, you should nto need to writye anything down (beyond, perhaps, which hair and clothing you used so you could be sure it was installed) - just save presets which you could then apply to a freshly loaded figure in a later version of DS.

The characters are a bit complicated, unfortunately...  various heights and body types, jewelry, morphs, including Facegen heads, unusual scaling of some things...  a lot to keep track of. They aren't just using pre-packaged product.

  • A character preset will apply morphs and textures, a wearables preset will apply props and fitted items. Obviosuly you should test to make sure they work but as long as the needed content is installed (or embedded, in the case of morphs that have not been saved as assets) they should be fine.

How do you save presets without the Genisis figure it applies to?  I don't understand what you're saying, or maybe you don't understand what I'm saying...  Yes, the morphing dials are still there, but not the percentages applied or scaled props connected to the specific figure, unless you know a way to save that?  I had scenes with characters posed, not with aautomatic poses from pose packages, but from moving the limbs, finges, etc.  I don't see a way to save that without being able to save the Genesis figure from the .Daz file...
I'd like to know if you do know a way to solve this, because otherwise I'm wasting time if I have a long process of recreation to do.

  • It might help in understanding that I've never used the "character presets" - - or at least not usefully.  I always save as "scenes", but at least in DS 4.0, it showed up under characters in the content tab.

  • A pose preset saves the values of the sliders, regardless of how theye were set, and the same for a shaping preset. I'm not sure what you mean by "without the Genesis that it applies to" - you said the scenes were opening on the other system so don't you have the figure there, posed, shaped, and materialed? You just make sure it is selected, save the presets, then load a fresh base figure in the newer version of DS and apply the saved presets to - with luck - restore your character.

"Pose preset"?  Does that save eveything, or just the pose?  Props, too? What about multi-character scenes?  I need to do some research on prests  -- I never used that part of Daz  -- saving scenes seemed easier and it worked.. until now.   I sort of dived in and figured out my own way to use Daz instead of watching all the instructional videos and the like... Maybe it's time to learn the "right way" to do things.

  • If you want to save items parented to a figure, use a Wearables preset. A pose preset is just posing, but it can be saved for a non-parented prop if need be. But as I said above, try a couple of test cases before trying to save presets for everything since it's a very big jump from the pre-release beta up to the current version.

  • There doesn't seem to be any way to save multicharacter scenes except picking one character at a time out and saving that as a preset (haven't found a way for clothes or hair to transfer... )...  and then deleting all Genesis characters and saving the scene/props, etc as a scene.  Once I sort everything, they can all be resaved, together as scenes.
I didn't see "Wearable Preset" as an option in Daz 4.0, so all clothes, associated props, etc, will have to be re-fit and in some cases, re-parented. That'll teach me to make a character with a ring on each finger...

I'm puzzled by 4.0.3.47 being called a "Pre-Release Beta" since it was widely used and available for free download... ?

  • The newer way populated scenes are saved is confusing... it goes, instead of in content on the right, into smart content on the left?  There's no way to put duf characters/scenes into the characters section?

Yes, there were several versions of Daz Studio 4 but they were public betas. the official first general rlease was 4.5.x.x (I can't recall the last two numbers off hand). There were a number of chnages through the public betas which may cause issues, I can't recall how early or late 4.0.3.47 was.

Yes - save to that folder (or use the + at the bottom of the pane). Smart Content shows content as arranged in categories, it isn't the way files are arranged on disc (which appear under Daz Studio Formats in the Content Library pane). Everything will show in both lists if properly categorised etc.; everything appears in the Daz Studio Formarts/Poser formats/Other Import Formats list regardless of categorisation.

I've managed to regain the ability to apply morphs and poses and skins that I had in .daz scenes, as character presets...  but all props or clothing are gone...  is there a way to save or apply that, or is it just going to be a pain in the butt of doing it all over again?
I tried saving that stuff as a seperate Material Preset, but... that didn't work. I think next time I have access to do so again, I'll try writing down the sizing and placement parameters of all props and see if I can replicate it that way  -- still time consuming, but not as time consuming as the first time around...
I see (from e-mail notification) there's a new version of Daz Studio - - any chance they've ironed out opening old Genesis .daz files in the newest version?

  • If you don't have the ability to save a Wearables preset, and can't save a Scene or Subset in .dsf or duf (I can't recall when .daz was dropped) then options are limited.
