If you do it I'll surely grab it!
What kind of corset?
Xandra might be in your library if you've been collecting bi-weekly freebies for a while. Doesn't count as a freebie at the moment, but the rules allow for a few of these, too, so...
Nice one! You beat me to the fire side render... I may have to rethink my entry... again!
Possibly not windy enough (or Cornish enough) but https://hdrihaven.com/hdri/?c=outdoor&h=white_cliff_top
I've been thinking wild, wild West Country too, but in a rather different way. Does anybody remember that classic movie****...
A stranger in a sou'wester* cycles along the main street into a quiet West Country village, stopping at the well for a drink. He sees a kid running across the main street and climbing into a window, only to be chased out the door by two fellows wearing***** white shirts and trews, flower-bedecked straw boaters, black crossed baldrics, and bells tied to their shins, who are dancing menacingly in unison.
It turns out that there are two rival Morris sides*** trying to take control of the place, and the antihero in the sou'wester, being a better dancer than any of them, decides to play them off against each other.
Yes, that was it - "A Fistful Of Hankies"
Only trouble is I can't decide on which scene to do - I'm leaning towards the final confrontation between Raymond Cagoule and the stranger, where the stranger flips up his sou'wester yellow oilskin raincape to reveal the pogo stick that he's just used to outwit Raymond; but then again, the "my bicycle gets the crazy idea that you're laughing at it" scene is such a classic; or how about the flamenco of death scene...
*This should actually be "bright yellow sou'wester and oilskin raincape", not just "sou'wester". Alas, it appears that I've always laboured under the misapprehension** that a sou'wester was the raincape and hat combination, which was bright yellow so that you could be easily spotted when you fell overboard... from your bicycle. But apparently the hat part is the sou'wester, whilst the raincape isn't. But no matter about the terminology, it's the combination that's important here - the raincape (which is, to all intents and puroposes, a poincho - albeit rather large) and sou'wester (which is not unlike the man with no name's cowboy hat. Well, actually it's nothing like it, except that it goes on your head)
**Or perhaps it was the weight of the raincape that I was labouring under? I recall the raincape being made of thick vulcanized rubber and weighing something like a car tyre (or tire for those in the US). It wasn't, I'm sure, as I was only a wee small laddie at the time and the raincape seemed as voluminous as a tent.
***A Morris side is (apparently, I don't know what I'm talking about) a troupe of Morris dancers (watch the video and then imagine all that being done in a menacing manner...) Based on the wet weather gear the two feuding families should probably be the Cagoules (who claim Spanish descent, and have introduced a spicy dash of Flamenco into their Morris) and the O'Pacamacs (of Irish stock, with a touch of the Ceili to theirs) ...
****If the description of the scene doesn't ring any bells (pun definitely intended - right left right hop, left right left hop, right hop, left hop, feet together, jump***) search for "a fistful of dollars opening scene" on YouTube
*****When I realized that my content library doesn't contain a traditional Morris dancing outfit I had to improvise. Here's my first attempt at one of the feudists (without his hankies)...
...ooo-errr ! I'm getting a definite (and completely unintentional) Alex and his Droogs (N.B. link is to a fandom wiki page with an 18+ warning at the top of the page) vibe there - now that would be a menacing Morris dance !
I haven't got the faintest clue what you're talking about... but two rival Morris would give us twice as many amazing skin textures, so count me in!
I haven't, unfortunately, only been back into 3d art for a couple months after an 8 year hiatus!
It'll be one similar to those worn in the 1880's... Modeling is done but still texturing. Here's a sneak preview of the back:
Yikes! Just thinking about that scene is giving me the shivers... my fear of heights just went up another notch. Yeah... no thanks!
I'm with Hylas on this one... I have no idea who they are either but count me in too!
Wow! Impressive bit of modeling! Looks great!
Ah! Now that makes a lot more sense. Fascinating bit of culture!
Whoops, I forgot to include the customary explanatory notes; I'm adding the missing footnote or two (or three, or four... ) to my previous post.
Yes indeed...
But wait a mo', that sounds like the movie tagline - "Morris dancing - Looks all a bit feeble, but has been known to harbour all sorts of tensions, rivalries and occasionally, violence."...
And of course, with a quaint West Country (same link as my previous post) setting and a tagline like that it's got to be Simon Pegg and Nick Frost !
Edit: I'm thinking of an alternative render, a scene from the less well-known* spaghetti western "Quel maledetto giorno d'inverno... Djumbo e Santana all'ultimo sangue" ("One Damned Day At Dawn... Djumbo Meets Santana"). We already know Djumbo's the coffin dragging elephant, but I'd better explain that Santana is a vampire mariachi who carries a variety of lethal weapons in musical instrument cases...
*because it's not very good
Oh, I dunno, it sounds pretty awesome to me. Sign me up, I'd like to see that one!
"Are you coming to the show?"
It's not a western without a 1880's inspired burlesque show. (And hey, see that corset? It's an honest-to-goodness freebie now!)
Doesn't count: Genesis figures, standard Genesis 8 Male texture with no morph), Genesis 2 Male Newport pants (comes with Daz Studio), standard Daz Studio shaders (on mirror)
Background and props:
On Genesis 8 Female:
On Genesis 8 Male:
Paid: Banker for Genesis 8, shirt shaders (can't remember where I got these)
Considering I'll never beat your talent, at least I grab that corset, thank you very much!
Oh, I wouldn't say that! Half the battle in modeling is learning the damn software. I am by no means a good modeler, some people could knock this sort of thing up in like a couple hours, for me, it took me an entire day and then some just to do the modeling. It's fun though, I am enjoying it - the creator side of me is looking for more cool things to model!
Silver Mining in Polite Company
The biggest pull factor for the settlement of the 'Wild West' in the early years was not land, but precious metals. Think of the 1848 gold rush. There were others, many others - the saying 'There's gold in them thar hills' comes from that period and it drove massive economic migration. There are all sorts of ghost towns in California where mining brought people to the area and the town died when the metals were exhausted. The mines were mostly hard rock mines. The rather easier method of mining by panning is only applicable for gold, and the largest value of metal mined in California was silver. The world repository of hard rock mining knowledge in the 19th century was Cornwall, with the Cambourne School of Mines being the centre for knowledge exchange, and a huge number of Cornish miners went on each precious metal rush. My great-grandfather was one, becoming a mine captain (underground manager) in a Johannesburg gold mine during the Boer War after an aborted gold hunting expedition up the Orinoco River in S America.
In the 'Wild West' precious metal rushes many people became employees of mine owners, working for a daily wage which barely covered living expenses in the company town store using the company scrip which was worthless outside the company town. If a miner fell ill, there was no pay unless.. unless the officially unthinkable occurred, and the wife did a day's work in place of her husband. This is documented as happening in the Levant mine in the far west of Cornwall during the 1800's, and if Cornish wives went with their men, the same would have happened wherever they settled. In the Levant mine, the lighting was almost exclusively from candles fitted to the miner's hat with lumps of clay (as seen in the image). Occasional oil lanterns were used, but light and oxygen were in short supply in the Levant mine 2 miles under the sea. Drift mines, like the early levels of silver mines driven in California had the advantage of better air (so better light with more lanterns) and the ability to use barrows. It was impossible to get barrows into some of the deep mines in Cornwall, and the broken rock was carried to the hoist buckets using woven baskets (frequently by the not-officially present children).
By the time mines became really deep in California, the use of 'Man Engines' had been abandoned. 'Man Engine' was the term for a lift system that consisted of a near vertical rod with platforms on it connected to a slow steam engine. The engine made the rod reciprocate up and down by 12ft. At the end of the stroke the person standing on a platform on the rod stepped off the platform onto a fixed ledge and waited half a stroke for the next platform to appear. This worked going up or down. The problem ... The whole lift rod hung off a single highly stressed bolt at the top. And bolts broke. And miners died as the platform rod collapsed the thousands of feet to the bottom.
Anyway, here is my entry:
It looks a bit dark on my tablet screen, but OK on my PC monitor.

Don't want to edit the lot above, as something else will glitch.
No,I was talking about the renders, because I'm not capable of model or hand-draw, I don't have the gift. All of you modellers are a step forward, together with sculptors and painters, I just enjoy your freebies and render them
Well, thank you kindly!
Thanks! I'm still having some challenges with UV mapping, but I think my modeling is improving...

My entry for the month is a bit different, an unusual take on the heat in the wild west.
Well, the contest is heat in the wild west, ok, you got it. It's really wild out there now. So we have a woman crawling across what used to be a lake bed in 120+ degree heat, no rain, no water of any kind, except the bottle she is headed for. Fires raging all around, sparks flying, grass and trees dead or dying. The West of 2021 is here, probably from now on.
