This was the entry thread for the last RRRR https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/482906/rrrrr-coming-late-excuses-entries-only-thread/p1
My pillow came in. Not sure why it still got shipped, but I got it anyway.
...hmm, that may explain the dystopian like security fence surrounding the Apple Store here with it's "Checkpoint Charlie" complete with guards (yes this actually is the downtown Portland Apple Store).
...ah yes, the old RRRR challenges. Those were fun and really helped push the boundaries of creativity as well as ingenuity.. Entered it a number of times even won a GC on a few occasions.
It was moved to the Art Studio forum some time ago but the last post I can find there was in mid June so sadly i looks as if it is no more.
Ah cool! It's been so very long since I was around there, didn't know it was still going. Don't know if they had themes back when I did mine or not though.
I feel a little silly. I was saving some content from Renderosity onto my DAZ runtime directory, and then couldn't actually find it in the Poser / My Library dropdown. After a few minutes of scratching my head I realized that the Libraries/Geometry/Character folders got put one directory too far into the system, so it was like "Runtime/Libraries/Libraries"
Intel Atom processor is so slow! Avoid for home office use. SSD is slow. Switching offrice-type programs using the taskbar is slow. Even my dad's old Celeron M at the same MHz is faster. Both have 2GB of memory.
"Atom Processor"? I thought your new computer had an Intel i5 processor?
Yeah, Atom processor chips are kinda wimpy. But they work well as table-leg levelers.
Oops, just caught that you also say 2GB RAM so this Atom is not your new computer. Is it your old one? Yeah, 2GB is pretty wimpy. Asking a modern operating system to operate in 2GB is like the circus Fat Lady trying to change clothes in an airplane restroom.
I pity the poor SSD trying to keep cool with all that swapping going on.
I said it'd be fun trying to combine two different genres/themes when randomly picking content, but trying to fit an Egyptian bridge in with an old west smithy building is a bit tricky
Also I have a significant lack of content available for the human figures, which admittedly isn't helping much. I mostly just have critters and props and stuff oop.
I have a few vague ideas but it'll require some modeling and stuff on my part, which I wasn't willing to do last night while I was feeling so sleepy. Or, when in doubt, make one of them a prop sitting on a table. "It's in the scene so it counts."
Kind of a cheap way out in my mind, so it'll be a last resort option.
I'm using the old atom processor/tablet now while I am waiting for the core i5 computer to arrive.
Are tablets still a thing? I thought the idea was pretty cool until I watched people carrying them and having to deal with them and protect them from damage and watch them like a hawk protecting its eggs. Much easier to just shove a phone in your pocket. Out of sight, out of mind to potential thieves. The most ridiculous thing I observed was people at Disney World carrying and taking photos with a thing the size of a dinner plate.
I admit, the photos when viewed on them were wonderful but they make most impractical cameras. Of course they have their uses but are they still popular?
Tablets of paper or iPad like tablets? I got an iPad. I like it but still doesn't replace a computer, bummer!
You must've missed my previous posts. My dad gave me an old Samsung Ativ Windows tablet that has Windows 8. It has issues rendering HTML 5 websitees/webapps. Ok, gonna go watch some videos about Terragen 4 now.
I want to do something useful but I can't do anything it feels as we are about to leave to go somewhere?
We still haven't gone anywhere.
We still haven't gone anywhere.
Complaint:
I was sitting at my computer figuring out how to rig a figure in Poser using a stupid book* I bought a while ago and it was not going great, but I was making progress... after sitting there for a while I suddenly and stupidly realized I hadn't saved... well, hadn't saved any significant progress in a while... whatever point I saved at was inconsequential and I had been doing a lot since that point...
So I decided to save and was thinking of a suitable name for the scene, since it's going to have to make sense to me later after I've forgotten what the hell that was all about... so I'm sitting there thinking and after a moment or two I come up with something that would make sense to me and I'm about to type in the name... I literally depressed the key... and poof... the lights go out and the computer shuts off... the lights go back on a second later, but I'm staring at a black screen...
Yeah... a black screen... connected to an off computer...
Problem is I have the stupid thing connected to an APU/UPS/Backup Battery... Or rather I should say "Connected to a UPS with a dead battery"...
Yeah, stupid on my part because I should have know it wasn't long for this world since I had to replace two others that were purchased at or around the same time... but with those I noticed the power lights had gone out indicating the battery would no longer hold a charge... which is how the manufacturer lets you know the battery is dead... in the most obtuse way possible... like why no red light that goes on instead of the green power light going off?
Irrelevant, it was still stupid of me to forget to replace it and not at least check the light... in my defense, I'm pretty sure it was on the other day when I plugged something into the nearby surge protector... but also, the two things are screwed to wall a foot off the floor, so you can't see any lights without looking under the desk.
*Secondary complaint.
Why do people who write Poser/DAZ books suck at understanding I might have bought the book to learn how to make content, not screw around with premade content... so annoying that almost every book I've gotten just glosses over this... they have you saving stuff in the stupidest ways possible or half explaining stuff...
Yes, I'm a caveman because I hate videos and prefer books... much easier to operate and go back and forth with, plus they don't need to be plugged into anything.
Well, the only thing that came out of that is I actually found a tolerable tutorial video from Renderosity that more or less explains the rigging process without too much side crap... well, the guy did fudge up a couple of times and takes the viewer along with him going back to fix his mistakes... not something I would do, but whatever.
Megh.
It may be a good thing...you see a common mistake that even he makes, and so you are now aware of it and maybe you will avoid making that mistake!
Dana
...with you there,
I prefer a book or PDF over a video as I can have it open to the page I need without having to constantly pause go back to run it again, sometimes several times over. It's tough enough having poor retention with videos, but often they are poorly narrated and edited. Sometime the narrator rambles on an unrelated tangent, sometimes the audio wasn't that great, and most infuriating, they skip steps in between assuming you already know them. I remember when Daz had free PDF tutorials which were easy to follow. Now they sell video tuts in the store, some of which are rather expensive..
Crikey, I still prefer to read text news stories online and ignore the related videos attached to them.
...ugh, U of Wisconsin Badgers were pummelled by Notre Dame this morning 34 41 - 13 (Irish just intercepted and ran it back for a a second consecutive touchdown with under a minute to go). 5 turnovers, all of which ended up in points for Notre Dame (total of 31 on four ND touchdowns and one ND field goal) .
The embarrassing part is ND's quarterback used to play for Wisconsin but transferred last year. so the Badgers have a rather inexperienced freshman at the helm who looked absolutely pathetic today.
So much for the season this year. They'll be lucky to end up in some meaningless corporate named December bowl game, if at all
...and to think at the start of the season ESPN had them as contenders for the national championship playoffs. They haven't been this bad for decades.

Complaint; binging on M&M's give me a sick feeling. Where's the beef?
Sometimes I agree. You see a professional and then a mistake or some unintentional outcome happens and then they have to fix it, and you get to see the process. If they just had their video edited to omit everything like that, what would you do if that came up? Struggle to fix it yourself not knowing what went wrong and why, or go find yet another tutorial to figure out how to fix it.
On the other hand, if it's something simple and obvious then you don't get anything out of it other than realizing that even someone who knows what they're doing sometimes slips up and it's not just the newcomers that make mistakes :)
As my Brother's eyesight worsens, he got a fairly large tablet so he can still read ebooks and stuff off the internet. So they do have their uses, yes.
Rezca, have you ever seen this creator's work? Lots of dragons - sculptures and soft toys, etc. some cool stuff.

I think I might have a long, long time ago but i'm not sure - those are lovely though! :O
Mr. Summers isn't doing well this morning. Both Lady Loki and I are worried. It is amazing to see a goldfish worry about her tank mate.
Complaint: I miss Chohole. I woke up this morning and stumbled into the kitchen and saw the rainbow of color from my window prisms again. The sun has moved around to it's fall position where the morning light comes directly to my window and through my prisms & makes my radiometer spin like mad. Yay!
But, I used to love to get comments from Chohole about my morning light show when I popped into the forum and said "Wheee..., my morning light show is back." I miss Chohole.
Non-complaint: Wheee..., my morning light show is back. Also, I think I found an acceptibly functional and sufficiently cheap laptop for either me or my sister-in-law. What do you think of this laptop? (No HP haters please.
)

Yeah, yeah, I know it can't do DAZ h/w IRay rendering and it doesn't have a super display and the "C:" drive is only a 256 SSD of unknown quality, and it "only" has 8GB of RAM but other than that, it looks like a sound, modern, low use, computer. Perfect for what I or my sister-in-law need in a laptop. Neither of us do any gaming and I certainly don't need my laptop to do IRay because I've got two VERY nice machines that already do that and I don't expect to be doing any rendering while traveling.
So, discounting the moot negatives, that leaves the appearance, size, basic functionality and the price. I like the price
. Just try to find a full HD laptop with big company support behind it for under $800 (US).
I don't really need a laptop, but the one I have is at least 10 years old, its an HP "hpG60-642NR" that originally came with Win7-Home installed which has been upgraded through Win7-Pro, Win8-Pro, Win8.1-Pro, and finally running Win10-Pro. The CPU is a Core2-Pentium with 2-cores, 2 threads. It's been maxed out with 4GB of RAM and I've replaced the original 1TB hard drive with a 1TB SSD. And last year I finally replaced the battery.
The laptop still works perfectly and is in excellent cosmetic condition. However, it reveales its age when I ask it to do things. It's slow and sooooo last generation.
(Might make a nice Linux machine though.)
However, not needing a new whizzo computer device is only sometimes an impediment to reckless spending. The only way I can justify this is to buy it for someone else so, maybe my sister-in-law will get a nice new laptop to replace the ancient microscopic toy she currently uses. Heaven knows I've done everything else for her machine. No more vitamins will work on it, it's a tired horse wanting to go to pasture. It's either a new laptop for her or a new version of Microsoft Office for her to bring her into the 21st century. 'Twon't be both.
I'm trying to prepare some water for a water change to see if that will save Mr. Summers.
The important thing is if you're happy with it ;-) For traveling I would highly recommend plastering some return address labels on the underside or someplace [clear tape over for protection] so that in the unlikely event it gets forgotten anywhere it might make its way home :-)
After 10 years ... you don't need to justify buying yourself a new computer lol ... they've made a lot of improvements over the years. Enjoy your new toy :-)
IF the water is fine for the other fish, then I wouldn't recommend changing the water for the sick fish. It could be very stressed out from the move and another water change is not likely to help it.
