Yep yep. Lots of them come with overclocking abilities or pre "overclocked" with bigger fans to keep them cool. From my experience they are not dangerously overworked, the last overclocked card I had from EVGA actually ran cool most of the time
I didn't go out of my way though, it just happened to be the right price ;)
Remember...the Superclocked cards are FACTORY overclocked...they come with FULL warranties...and EVGA is a nice company to work with on warranty support. (They actually just sent me the fan when it died...no problems.)
As to that last pic...
WRONG!
If you are using Windows to determine if your drivers are up to date, then they are not. Go to the card manufacturer's site (better) or AMD itself (best) and get the driver (same for Nvidia).
Ah ha!!!!
I betcha that's it. I haven't updated the drivers for quite a while.
FWIW, a new update came out a few days ago; I got the auto notification through the NVidia control panel. I don't think it's actually made a noticeable difference, but I'm still on D|S4.6 (can't use DIM so I'll have to wait until 4.8 comes out of beta).
As for the new goodies, I think I'll be stuck on CPU-only rendering for a while longer — all I have is a GT240 on my 4-year-old system, and I can't afford better hardware right now.
Just to pop back into the thread again, let's not forget the Tesla M2090 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/NVIDIA-Tesla-M2090-6GB-GDDR5-PCIe-x16-GPU-Computing-Processor-VIDEO-CARD-/131230385109?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1e8df0c3d5
These are coming back in from leased machines. I got 4 from this vendor for 120 a pop.
These are basically 590 GTX's with 6 GB of DDR5.
In Octane land we love the 6GB cards, not that it matters anymore for us with out-of-core.
M2090's perform at about 58% performance of a 780 GTX in Octane making them a steal.
Just FYI!

Well, my tests are complete for today.
I must say, the new Iray is impressive, although I'm in agreement with many here that a tutorial on it would be most helpful.
So, for Mac users out there, especially MacBook Pro users like myself, here's what I got out of the new renderer:
3Delight : 3 minutes 15.57 seconds
Iray / CPU : 8 minutes 53.84 seconds
Iray / GeForce GT 650M : 9 minutes 51.81 seconds
Iray / CPU + GeForce GT 650M : 11 minutes 19.57 seconds
Iray / CPU + GeForce GT 650M + OptiX Prime Acceleration : 11 minutes 30.41 seconds
Iray / GeForce GT 650M + OptiX Prime Acceleration : 11 minutes 35.61 seconds
MacBook Pro Mid-2012, 16gb Ram, nVidia GeForce 650M with 512mb VRam.

An interesting note: Whenever I used the GPU for rendering, once it was done, the video on the MacBook Pro was extremely unstable. If I tried another render, it would crash the Mac requiring a complete restart. If I quit Daz Studio 4.8 Beta, it would still be unstable, but would last long enough for me to choose the restart option via the menu and most times it would restart. A couple of times it froze at the white screen right before it finally restarts. So, for me, Iray is too unstable to use the GPU, but there just wasn't any speed benefit. This is strictly due to the lack of VRam that I have I'm quite sure, not a problem with Iray, but the instability I'm unsure of whether the low VRam is the issue causing the instability. I have no delusions though... I'm surprised it worked at all on my laptop.
I've also included the differences between the renders for those interested.
Generally with video problems like described, especially with Nvidia cards, there are two common causes...heat or drivers. It's not really an issue with the stability of the program, but rather one of hardware or drivers. On a Mac you are pretty much limited to the drivers that Apple gives you, so you may want to look into cooling options.
even cranked up, my photometric lights dont seem to do anything. I have tried setting it to scene only and to dome and scene, but no noticeable effect from the lights -only the dome and sun/sky seems to work. I have turned off my cam's headlamp as well, in case that interfered somehow but no dice.

Thanks I'll do that.
Edit to add: Was a very good idea :-) D/S loads faster and works freer [not as bogged down] than before updating via the site.
And after an hour's render saved to the Desktop, my happy results:
Are you setting the "Intensity" or the "Luminous Flux (Lumen)"? For the photometric lights you should use the "Luminous Flux (Lumen)" setting. The "Intensity" is only good for fine tuning.
Keep in mind for Iray and Physically based renders in general, lighting is a balance between lights and the tone mapper. The tone mapper in studio by default is set to an exposure for day time sun light which is much brighter than most man made light sources. If you want man made lights to show up with the sun they need to be set really high. A camera flash for instance can measure in the 1.4 million to 9 million lumens range. If you want to use just artificial lights, for instance in an interior scene, I recommend turning down the Tone Mapper's exposure value.
Wikipedia has a nice entry on exposure value including a chart.
The recently posted docs explain the Tone mapper included with Iray.
Does anyone know if the layered image editor stuff will work in this?
removed post.. LOL
Finally home from work and could do some more research....
Found that my graphics card info by using the CPU-Z is not that great. New system but under what's recommended to be able to render using the GPU....
Did the search for "nvidia gt 4gb" but the ddr is 3 not 5 on most of the cards I looked at. Kinda want the newest and fastest bang for my buck. Not sure what the ddr5 is about as ddr3 is pretty new compared to ddr2....
Searched on Amazon, most of the cards there are only 2Gigs, not 4. NewEgg is showing me some promise I think.
Search for nvidia gt 4gb on eBay
I'm using a GT 640 with 3GB rated at 144 cuda cores and I find the performance is perfectly acceptable. I see GT 640 4GB listings which are rated at 384 cuda cores for well under $100. If the cuda core is not listed for the gpu, google NVidia cuda cores and there are many listings available. If you prefer a new card, check at the major stores like newegg or amazon.
This is kind of a how's your graphics card hanging thread.... mine was in the pool! mine was in the pool!
So here is the full search at Amazon for the EVGA, 4 Gigs of DDR5 PCI-E cards..

downloaded Project Iradium last night, spent a good part of the day playing with it. I like it, I think it does have great potential, and it does have reatures that Reality 4/LuxRender don't have.
I'm no expert and I learn by trial and error. I got Reality about a month ago and after some fits and starts and many failures can turn out a decent render, and consequently do all of my rendering with it. One of the features it has that Iray doesn't is the ability to fine-tune your settings while the rendering is proceeding. With Iray you have to put in all your settings and after the image first appears (for me it's a little over 65 seconds) you will know if all the settings will give you good results. If not, you have to start from scratch.
It is absolutely essential there be a manual for it, a manual devoid of technical mumbo-jumbo, written so that the average person can understand it.
I still can't figure out the lighting in Iray...here are two examples of sunlight shining through the window of the Castle Room set and there's almost no bounced light. The sun is positioned to shine through the window using a spotlight as its node, all other settings are default.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Iray has portals, but I'm not sure how you would implement then in DS. A portal helps by basically telling the render engine that it is an opening that light should pass through, sort of speeding up and improving the indirect lighting. A work around is to position the sun light so that it comes directly through the window, and to add a few very low intensity lights in locations where they can't be seen.
Edit: Increasing the sun intensity can help too, as long as you don't blow out the blue in the sky.
Try using one of the iRay glass shaders on the windows.
Where can i find those shaders >.>

Under Shader Presets and there is something under Render Presets.

This. If you don't have those, they're a separate download through DIM called Public Beta Iray Support Content.
Look at the Advanced tab of Render Settings (with Iray set as the engine) - you can turn your GPU(s) and CPU on and off. It's not that impressed with my 1GB card - it managed a naked G2F, but failed with a slightly more complex scene, but I cans till run in CPU-only mode (which is of course slower).
This might be a stupid question but will this work with AMD GPUs? I've got a Mac Pro 2013 with two AMD D700s but I also have a 3.7 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon E5?
I tested something tonight that used it and it rendered fine. I didn't add the Iray shader base or anything. Just a straight load of the clothing and then applying the materials.
Thanks, but nothing makes any difference except some very careful adjustment of the sun placement. Glass shader did nothing and even the camera's headlight isn't working here. The unpredictability is getting annoying.
snowsultan you need to make adjustments in the tone mapping. In render settings. Imagine taking this as a photograph with a camera and film set up for bright outdoor lighting. You get the light outside because it is bright enough but inside where there is a lower level of light you get darkness.
...need volumetrics, that shot would be awesome with godrays.
Try activate the Architectural Sampler in the Render Settings (Opti...)
Architectural Sampler
1. Employs Metropolis Sampling
2. Makes interiors and dark scenes converge faster. Useful for:
1. Interior scenes lit by exterior light through small windows
2. Light passing through Translucent or Glossy surfaces
3. Bright light reflected from Glossy and Specular surfaces
4. Sub-surface Scattering
Thank you Khory, that did help. Not being a photographer, I'm not exactly sure what adjustments to make, but it is getting better. The window is very blown out now, but I'll just have to experiment (or postwork, Photoshop fixes all). :)
I dunno what I'm doing wrong, but I just threw the Iradium beta in my basket, checked out, hit the download button and when my downloader opened it was empty. I tried it like three times. Am I missing something? I have seen people posting test renders and they look great, can I try it too!?
Thanks!
I agree.
People have asked various questions relating specifically to this new release (myself included) and they seem to be getting snubbed for this conversation :(
