Recently Cyan released Riven in VR and of course I had to get it right away - I spent many an hour playing the flatscreen version walking around the islands. Its fantastic in VR, you feel like you're completely there... totally recommend it if you have a decent computer and a headset.

Art in virtual reality is what truly inspires me about immersive technology—it brings colors, shapes, and movement to life in entirely new ways. My goal is to create a vibrant, interactive world that you can walk around and fully experience, letting the power of color and form spark your imagination. Here’s a small preview of what I’ve been up to :)
Hi Mada,
Thank you for keeping this thread updated with your fascinating work.
I contributed to the thread near the start under a different name when I was pondering whether to get a Quest2 but I am forever guilty of not finding time to reply until the thread has moved on. Life's cares always interrupt the flow!
Anyway, just prior to Christmas just passed, I had a sudden notion to give in and buy a headset without any further research. I'm so glad I did. It has given me great enjoyment even though I think I've hardly scratched the surface of what it can do.
Having been interested in 3d stuff for a very long time, I thought I had at least some grasp of most of it, but the VR world is another whole realm of creativity to get to explore and enjoy.
I bought Meta's Quest 3s - the least of the range. What put me off Meta's previous headsets was the requirement to join Facebook.
A little of what I've learned may help anyone considering getting a headset.
To begin, I only looked at the Meta headsets without comparing other makes. Meta's latest headsets (Meta Quest 3) come in three versions: The Meta Quest 3 and two versions of the Meta Quest 3s.
These headsets don't require a Facebook account; they only need an app to be downloaded on a mobile phone or tablet for setup purposes and for any future shopping for games, etc.
There are two Meta Quest 3s versions - one version has double the memory of the other and costs more. They both have the same viewing lenses which are the same as the previous Quest 2 but all the Quest 3 models use the same improved chipset.
The Quest 3 (not either of the 3s models) is top of the range and has superior 'pancake' lenses giving better clarity and there are also more pixels to give (I hear) a much better viewing experience. The Quest 3 also has the same greater memory/storage that the better of the Quest 3s models has.
All the Quest 3 models allow 'pass-through' viewing which can be switched off and on so that actual real-world surroundings can be seen as well as what is being presented by the headset. (I don't know if this is true in all applications).
I am not a serious games player which means that I have never needed the headset to be tethered with a cable to a PC. The Quest scans my surroundings on start-up and I generally choose a stationary view from my sofa. If I do stand up and move position after that, my real world surroundings come into view. I do generally need to be connected to Wi-Fi for You Tube and all Meta things, but that's fine.
I only bought the Quest 3s with the least memory because I had never tried a headset before I got mine out of the box at home. Neither have I seen or used the version with greater memory nor the top of the range with much better viewing lenses plus greater memory. In spite of that, I look forward to getting the best of the three at some time in the future because not everything is perfect with what I have. Some VR videos are more blurred than I think they should be and memory limitations seem to be a bottleneck which causes videos to pause during downloading/viewing (maybe my wi-fi isn't keeping up?).
I could talk more of my newcomer's experience of VR but I do have to get my head around so many things (excuse the pun) before I will be able to give accurate information to anyone else. (What brought me to my computer tonight was a wish to check out VR sculpting software. I'm about to buy Shapelab which has an inexpensive version on the Meta store and which runs untethered on the headset. The Shapelab website doesn't mention this new version).
Best regards.
I hope the above information offered contains no errors but I may have got something wrong and ask anyone encouraged to buy to carry out some research beforehand.
oh that's great - glad you took the plunge and that you're enjoying the headset :)
VR sculpting software I use the most is Gravity Sketch (paid) but you can also do a lot with Open Brush which is free on the Meta store.
https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/open-brush-3d-painting/3600360710032222/
Looking forward to see what you're doing with it! I actually own Gravity Sketch but I haven't even tried it yet. I'm pretty sure I somehow got it free quite a while ago and not sure if I have the full version. I have Open Brush and the very similar app, I forgot its name, that came with my Quest2, and also Quill but not sure how to even save these out for distribution in VR.
Ideally, I'd like to create something similar to what I had in AltspaceVR which was a huge cool two floor night club, a Unity asset I had purchased from someone for use in AltspaceVR (gone now unfortunately) and decorated with HUGE blowups of my sci-fi/fantasy art all over the walls. It even had four bars with virtual cocktails you could pick up, a dance floor, couches with bottle service tables, a small restaurant seating type area and an outdoor pool and jacuzzi looking over the lights of Las Vegas with billboard size images of my art all over the walls. People could use their controllers to walk around, pick up cocktails and other objects and even pet virtual cats that were hanging around the club. I even decorated it for Christmas and had a giant martini glass with a candy cane at the entrance and music of course! I hate to say it but I actually had a great time during Covid lockdown! Having parties, going to parties, seminars, networking events, group meditations, all in VR, never having to do my hair and makeup (or even shower lol) and worry about driving and parking! I would love to recreate this as an app available in the Meta Quest store and Steam. Do you @Mada (or anyone reading this) know how I could go about this without learning Unity? Or if anyone would like to team up with me to create this, please let me know. I may be able to get the Unity club asset again from the creator I purchased it from. So it would be a matter of putting jpgs of my art on the walls, the ability to have the user travel through the space with controllers and it would be cool to have the working bar with drinks you can pick up, and more as a multiplayer event space app also with music and lighting the user could control. This sounds super hard as I type this but I know there are many talented people out there who may be interested in partnering with me creating this as a paid app. If anyone who happens to read this knows Unity and is interested in partnering up, please let me know!

You have several challenges to solve, especially if you want multiplayer functionality. The best approach would be to use a platform that already handles the heavy lifting—such as servers, avatar syncing, and interactions. Syncing elements like music and lighting across different headsets can be particularly tricky, requiring extra work to ensure a smooth experience.
For what you're describing, VRChat would be a solid option. Their SDK is well-equipped for uploading worlds, and their platform already supports multiplayer interactions, pickable objects, and even social events. You will need Unity to upload your world, but since you already have the club asset, that's a big step forward.
If you're open to other platforms, Horizon Worlds (Meta) and Rec Room also offer multiplayer world-building, though they have some restrictions. Another option could be NeosVR, which is highly customizable and powerful for interactive experiences but has a steeper learning curve.
Viverse is another possibility - it uses PlayCanvas which is like a unity clone - but I did find the learning curve steep there as well.
Posting in VRChat Creator communities or Unity development forums might help - as much as I would like to help out, I already don't have enough hours in my days for everything - my eyes are way bigger than my available time lol
Thanks Mada and Wonderland for your replies. I hope in my post yesterday I didn't stray from the purpose of the thread which is to discuss software for headsets.
I am bewildered by much of the technology of the VR world - in some ways I'm unable even to formulate the questions I need to ask.
One of the offerings for viewing which comes up every time I put the headset on is called 'Theater Elsewhere'. The viewer is immersed in fantasy surroundings of which there is a selection to choose from and is faced with a screen of huge thumbnails of people's works. The works are amazing 3d painted representations of all sorts of things - often animated. All the ones I've viewed have been created in something called Quill (mentioned above) but I haven't found anywhere to check it out. I had expected to get Tilt Brush but that seems to have disappeared and re-emerged as Open Source.I'm not sure. Meta has a version which I've tried and seems to be based on Tilt Brush. I'm happy with that.
I also tried Gravity Sketch. I exported a Genesis 2 FBX animation from Poser but what came through was the figure in a T- pose and with the clothes un-fitted as they were at frame one. No animation. So I had a gigantic T-pose Genesis2 female suddenly in front of me in my living room! Gravity sketch allowed me to paint clothing on and experiment with the brushes. Learning to scale the scene up and down and rotating the objects meant that I could paint-sculpt for ages without getting up from my seat. Great fun.
This morning I made my first cash purchase of the software I mentioned called Shapelab Lite 25 (Or is it Shapelab 25 Lite). It too is fantastic. I played with it for only ten minutes and it is like Sculptris or a cut-down 3d Coat or Nomad Sculpt. It doesn't use Voxels but has dynamic tesselation I think. I foresee using that a lot.
If I can figure how to get images synced with my tablet and on to the PC I'll post some when I can.
Regards to all.
oh no worries :) feel free to ask and if I know the answer I'll post - its a bit like learning a new language
You can find Quill here : https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/pcvr/quill-by-smoothstep/5910229332328230/
I haven't done much in Quill, I find it a bit harder to learn than the other options... the brush menu is quite bewildering the first time
Tilt Brush is now open source yes, and there's a couple of communities and programs based on it - the most supported one is Open Brush and they're actively continuing development with new brushes. You also have Multibrush which is aimed at multiplayer
Gravity Sketch has limitations on how it imports an FBX so base pose is about what you will get, it doesn't do animation. The purpose of the import is solely to get something to compare/use for comparison as you sculpt, you can't edit or adjust polygons.
I have not tried Shapelab - but I'll give it a look when I have time, sounds interesting :)
To get screenshots onto the PC you need to connect your Quest with a USB cable (the one you charge with is fine) and then give permissions in the headset screen for your computer to browse the files. Once that is done you can see the Quest as a drive on your PC.
Thanks, once again, Mada. I can imagine Quill being complicated but some of the work done is stunning.
The fact that I couldn't find it kind of illustrates what bewilders me about the VR world. I haven't worked out whether different makes of headsets each have their own operating system so that it might be like Apple, Microsoft and Linux. I had come to think that Quill must have belonged to another platform.
The other thing I haven't worked out is the quality and performance differences from one VR video to another. The contenders, I suppose, for poor quality are probably:
1 The original video may be low resolution for one reason or another (older camera?)
2 My wi-fi streaming the video to the headset may be getting out of breath with the size of the download. There are various levels of quality that can be chosen in settings but You Tube and Mwta TV choose 'an Auto' setting and this can sometimes be very blurry. Higher settings cause pausing and stuttering of the download stream. There is an option in Meta's viewer to cache the video at high quality - which is great when it does so but I've found it sometimes to be hit or miss.
3 The headset has a tendency to download ugrades to software and also to download things Meta wants me to have. When a heafty download is taking place, the performance for video viewing suffers.
You might gather that I enjoy seeing You tube videos in VR. At this time I notice that a huge number of these originate in SE Asia. I didn't know what K-pop was (cute Korean pop stars singing and dancing) but there seems to be a lot of it as well as travel and other stuff based in Japan or elsewhere. There are many Cosplay events from around the world where costumed super heros swing their swords or give a twirl for the camera. These often bring a smile to my face. Videos from the USA show stunning scenery. The staff at DAZ in Utah have some amazing waterfalls and forested gorges to visit. I've checked them out from my sofa and have no mosquito bites to show for it. Something I really am surprised to enjoy are the staged dance and acrobatic performances from china. Some of the music is really inice n the dance performances and I would never have got to hear it otherwise.
In some videos, the photographer has been moving fast and turning the camera around and on a few occasions these have led to instant dizziness but that is absolutely no problem for almost everything I've watched.
Lastly, I tried out Shapelab for less than ten minutes after my purchase and later in the day for longer. I'm really pleased with it.
The snapshots are from the first five minutes just showing the doodles I tried.
Wonderland, The figure I got into Gravity Sketch was painted over with ribbons and tubes. I am an absolute beginner but since I spoke about it, here is an image or two
Thanks @Mada but I really want to create my own standalone app. VRChat and Horizons are just too chaotic for me. I really liked AltspaceVR because it was smaller, more intimate, easier to navigate and make actual friends, with 99.99% of the people I met being adults, at least in their twenties to much older. I got into many deep conversations there, it was wonderful. Any children who popped in were immediately intimidated or just bored with all the adults in the room and left. It was really rare to see kids because it wasn't designed for them and they went off to RecRoom or VR Chat. VRChat and Horizons always seem to have a bunch of obnoxious kids running around yelling obscenities and trolls and weirdos. I miss AltspaceVR. Many people I met there were Unity users so maybe I'll try to track some down at some point.
@Hermit Crab, I'm pretty sure Quill is for PC use only so you wouldn't have found it in the Quest Store, you have to check the Rift store (if it's still called that) and you have to have your Quest on Air Link or hooked up to the PC with a cable. I have Tilt Brush that originally came free on either my Quest or Rift, can't remember and apparently OpenBrush is basically the exact same app. I never tried to create any real art with it but enjoyed playing in what felt like a psychedelic playground, just testing all the different brushes and effects while listening to Pink Floyd lol. I've become lazy lately, mostly just using VR to watch TV/movies/streaming content on the big screen and watching VR videos, passive experiences or meditation apps. I've got to start creating with it! And doing workout apps except I currently have a fractured foot and am on crutches so can't do anything that requires standing for now.
@Wonderland Totally understand that you would prefer to do your own thing :) ... there are very high costs associated with a standalone VR app, as well as ongoing costs - there's a reason why multiplayer apps are not quite as common as single player.
From what you described you will need a dedicated server for a persistent world, a multiplayer networking option (Photon Fusion or NormCore), multiplayer object sync for realistic interactions, server and cloud hosting like AWS, Azure (and the more users you get the more you pay for the service). Some kind of user authentication for logins, accounts, and security. An avatar system. It will take 6 months to more than a year to develop so salaries for people working on it. Unless you can monetize it with a subscription or something like that it could get very expensive, I think the biggest reason AltSpace got closed down in the end - it had high costs associated with it and no real way to cover those costs.
@Hermit Crab Yes it definitely sounds like your wifi is struggling a bit with the bandwidth required, especially for 4K videos - the stuttering is a good indication. My mother is 86 and she really enjoys travel videos too, especially since it would be too hard for her to travel now :)
Thanks for replying again, Mada. I began reading this discussion over again from the beginning (as I did a couple of times over the years) but now the great information it contains hits the mark for me much more.
The doodles I showed were no more than that. I hope to see if I can get creative. Since covering the Genesis 2 figure with ribbons and tubes in Gravity Sketch, I've found that I can do other things that eluded me before. You will know this undoubtedly, but I found that some functions involve triggers being pressed on both hand controllers at the same time.
So thanks for helping me/us by starting this thread and replying each time I posted.
