Did you download and install the new plugin version, not just re-install your current one? I've always uninstalled the old version before updating D|S, then install the new plugin afterwards, and I don't think I've ever had activation glitches.
Remember the Dynamics plugin is one of the few that never works without an update to match the D|S program — the last two numbers of the version must be the same between D|S and the plugin.
You should have a version of the Dynamic Clothing Control specifically for the beta.
I have the right version, but it's stuck in basic. I can't figure out how to get it to prompt me for the serial number, if that's the issue.
Edit:
Ah. I had to uninstall both versions and reinstall, and now it's fine. ... ok, then!
Even if the old dynamic clothing control plugin would work with a new DS version, it won't unless you reinstall it.
DS - main or beta - comes with the basic dynamic clothing plugins (there are a couple of plugins involved, not just one) to give basic dynamic clothing functionality to users who haven't bought the full version. When DS starts, if it finds BOTH basic AND full dynamic clothing, basic takes priority, and your DS will start up with only basic dynamic clothing showing, even though the full one is in there.
When you install the full dynamic clothing control, as part of the installation process it RENAMES the basic dynamic clothing plugins (by adding an extra, non-DS-Plugin filetype extension so DS no longer sees them as plugins, and then when you start DS it only sees the full version plugins and loads with the full version.
But if you install a new version of DS - or even just reinstall the same version for some reason - that removes the old, renamed basic dynamic clothing plugins and puts in fresh versions of the basic plugins. As fressh - not renamed - versions they are now visible again, so they will take priority over the full versions again, and DS will start only showing basic dynamic clothing EVEN IF the full versions of the plugins are still there and would still work with the version of DS you've just installed/re-installed. So you HAVE to reinstall the full dynamic clothing control just so it renames the basic plugins to make them 'invisible' to DS again. The only other way to get full dynamic clothing control function back is to manually go into the DS plugins folder in the the DS programs folder and yourself rename (or delete) the basic plugins to hide/remove them so DS 'sees' and uses the full versions instead - but it's quicker and easier (and safer for those who don't like poking around inside the program directories) to just run the full dynamic clothing control installer again to do it for you.
In fact, very often the full dynamic clothing control plugin hasn't changed at all, despite the version number change. and the old version would work fine with the new DS after the basic dynamic clothing plugins have been 'neutralized'. DAZ just provide a 'new 'plugin with matching version number change as an update, even if the old plugin would work fine, just so you have a full dynamic clothing installer immediately to hand to run to incidentally hide the basic dynamic clothing plugins you've just installed and don't have to go searching for a previous version of the full plugin installer to run.
P.S. this also means you MUST install/re-install the full dynamic clothing control AFTER installing/re-installing the main DS program. If you do the dynamic clothing control first, the DS install will put the working, non-renamed basic plugins back in after the full dynamic clothing control installer renamed the old basic plugins, and you will end up with only the basic controls showing agin.
Greetings,
Does Iray in DAZ Studio support matte objects? If so, how do we set it?
I'm especially curious as the HDR Pro Sets Monterey are in Fast Grab, and a few matte primitives would make some of those scenes super-immersive...
-- Morgan
It is certainly used for objects, not for lights though. Nothing to do. Just put an HDR map in the environment
You can make an object a "matte object" by running the "[ContentDir]/Scripts/Utilities/Create Advanced Iray Node Properties.dse". It will add properties to the selected node that include the ability to make it a "matte" object.
Note: these properties are only seen when an object is first sent to iray, so you'll need to restart any iray draws that are going when you run the script(ie change to another draw style and change back).
What are the hardware requirements for the new Daz Studio? I have a computer which is a bit old, though I can run 4.7 without many problems.
It's not just the dynamic plugin...it's all the content installed by the base installer...that means all included plugins (like PowerPose, the 3DConnexion, etc).

The Dynamic Clothing plug-in is a special case, as David says - you must install it after the actual DS application. The others shouldn't matter which order they are installed in, and content shouldn't need reinstalling at all (unless it has been updated).

It is only the plugins that come with a Basic version in DS, but an add-on separate advanced version that can be bought. The issue is that the base version overrides the advanced version if both are present together, so the advanced one has to be installed after every DS installation to 'hide' the basic version that is in the DS install, a process that occurs as part of the install of the advanced version, but which is thetrefore 'undone' by a new DS install. That is ONLY the Dynamic Clothing plugin, and ... I think there is/was ONE other product, but I can't remember which it was. All other plugins where there is ONLY the version that comes with DS, or there is ONLY an add-on product with no base version in DS are not affected by this problem.
My question is a tad different than Morgan's...
Both the HDR Pro Sets Monterey and Skies of Economy are in Fast Grab. I'm kind of assuming by Morgan's question the first is appropriate for the Iray Environment setting. What about Skies of Economy? Will it work, or are the domes not High-rez enough?
...Skies of Economy also includes HDRI spheres for use with Reality/Lux, so I think those should work.
Thank you. I'm trying to decide if I should get one of them, and if so, which one. Or maybe I should just get both...
Decisions, decisions... lol

The point is that the install does overwrite ANY customizations...I specifically mentioned PowerPose, as that one is possibly the most likely to be customized. And I always disable the two 3d mouse ones...why have DS try to load them and error out because it can't find the hardware to go with them...before it continues on its merry way.
Yes, the Dynamic plugin IS a special case, but it isn't the ONLY thing to watch out for.
Yes - the unofficial Powerpose update has to be installed each time too ...

Yes, the Dynamic plugin IS a special case, but it isn't the ONLY thing to watch out for.Installing the Beta doesn't overwrite anything. It also doesn't read the preference files from the release version, so while your customizations do not show up in the Beta, they also are not removed from the Release version.
Spooky...yes, I know that.
What my point is...the Dynamic Cloth plugin is NOT the only 'gotcha' you have to watch out for. It's probably the most common one, but...
Also, reinstalling the release version DOES or if you made the customizations, reinstalling the Beta.
Can anyone explain to me exactly how to convert my shaders to Iray?
You can adjust them from there to your taste.
You can adjust them from there to your taste.
Oh. Okay. Thank you. I wasn't certain if that's what it meant. So, if I placed a shader on an object ( like a sphere etc) I could make a folder of preset Iray shaders?
Here's a bit of fun if you haven't already found it. After you've installed the Beta take a look in your Daz Studio "Props" folder and you'll find a sub-folder named "DAZ Material Ball". In this folder you'll find an icon that loads a scene containing the DAZ Material ball (there's more of it than you see in those little shader preset icons... it's really rather beautifully designed), plus a floor grid exactly as you see in the Material Ball Scene icon. There is a "Large Icon Camera" and a "Small Icon Camera" already preset to render shader preset icons. I do believe this can be used in commercial projects, and certainly for private use.... but don't bother to search for the little DAZ logo texture for the inner-ball; that is for DAZ in-house use only.
Have fun!

That's useful info. I'm working on some shaders just using the DAZ Advanced options so it would be nice to NOT have to redo all of them. I have a couple hundred done so far so yea.... glad for this info! lol
...one thing I've noticed when working with Iray shaders and changing colours in the surfaces tab, is that the colour channels use a different scale (0 - 1.0) than the colour chart (0 - 255) that comes up when you click on them. This tends to add a level of confusion when trying to perform slight variances in colour of an item. I know one can place the cursor over a numeric value in the channel and change it by moving the cursor left or right. However, it requires an incredibly deft hand to do so, compared to using the up down controls on the colour chart.
As small issue but one worth noting.
One annoying detail: in 3Delight shaders, you can flip positive and negatives for displacement. So, for example, min displacement 5 and max displacement -5. This effectively inverts the map.
This doesn't work in Iray, which can be annoying.
I've had to do that with so much stuff (Spec maps, reflection strength maps, etc), the biggest annoyance is just trying to find the map in the first place outside of Daz. It's like the endless clocking threw folders, camera hallway effect, lol.
Oh, I've done that a few times. It's just... inelegant and time consuming. ;)
I get this error message and I have no clue why.
Not used to the Install Manager so not sure what I have to do before downloading.
What am I doing wrong. hmmm
It probably tried to install them before DS4.8 beta itself finished installing. For the Photoshop 3D Bridge you need to have the path to Photoshop set in the Settings > Applications tab.
I know the feeling - I use the DAZ Installer --> Show installed files all the time for this !
