I discovered that I do have a life outside of DAZ forum browsing.  I got a lot done in the house and other projects.  Thanks DAZ!indecision

  • I figured the hamster, seeking to combine memes, decided to borrow the LAN cable for the weekend, tripped over the power cord and accidentally pulled it out. Sadly this electrocuted the poor hamster. Memorial services will be held at 5:02 Utah time.

When I was an active mod at another forum we had a major database failure that took 2 days to cure. Normally the forum had a daily throughput of 30Gb of text & images - so it was busy. We hand wrote a home page for the forum apologising, saying what we thought had happened, the steps needed to solve the problem and estimated dates & times for the solution. Then we updated the page with actual achieved times for the work to show progress, and did this every 6 hours to show that users were not being ignored. It's called 'Communication with the users.' Feedback after the event was very positive, as users didn't feel ignored.

That would be a good model to follow if something similarly serious occurs to the forum here again.

An excellent idea and one practised by a wide variety of other businesses.

Unfortunately, I was trying to do something this weekend with creating emissive materials and most of the pertinent information was locked up on the 502ed forums so all I had access to were video tutorials that didn't come close to helping out.

Kinda pissed, but it's to be expected at this point...

And my sympathies go out to the folks who were probably trying to fix this all weekend while we were cursing those damned infernal servers of despair.

  • that is what worried me.

it is one thing to no longer be able to post on a forum, can cope eith that

another to lose access to the resources and information on one.

is still unbelievably upsetting we lost the info on the old ones.

Obviously someone "borrowed" the network cable to use at home over the weekend.

Or the server was hijacked by a bunch of cryptominers, trying to gather enough invisible currency to pay for their NFT shopping needs?!? wink

I like that latter suggestion... Very meta, but it should have taken no time at all, given the real & present need to have NFT's.

  • I don't want to beat up on the tech guys trying to support the forum infrastructure, because I'm guessing they're probably tearing their hair out these days.

But I do want to add my $0.02 worth that the forums are not just a cost  for DAZ 3D.  I would guess that info in the forums offloads more than 50% of the tech support requests DAZ might receive.  Fewer support tech salaries, desks, office space, benefits, etc. just by enabling customers/enthusiasts to support each other.

The other thing is that without the forums, DAZ 3D is just another store on the internet with a bunch of product offerings.

No interest browsing any of the DAZ pages if the forums are down.

OH - where might those be? I need one badly.

it is true that these forums are about the only place to find out the information to allow DAZ stdio to work, to find tips, solve probelms ... in a timely manner. I had a question on reinstaloling my DAZ software and products over the weekend and ended up just deleting everything and start over. Now I have 2 products in my content. A total rebuild is on the way.

I had the same issues.  I actually had some free time over the weekend and used it to work on an image and finally actually use some new I got a couple of months ago. Of course I had a few questions about doing things that I had forgotten since I haven't been able to use DS much at all for a long time. Of course without the forums being available the information I needed was nowhere to be found!! I was able to finally figure it out on my own,  but wasted a couple of hours doing so.

I hope DAZ realizes that the forums are a valuable resource for their users that d ..... (Edited to finish post) we interrupt this message for an unscheduled post to the forums and termination of the conversation ...... Minor technical glitch .... partially caused by an unidentified twitching issue between the chair and the user interface, combined with external forces drawing me away from the computer at that critical moment.

Sorry for the interruption! Anyway, I hope DAZ realizes that the forums are a valuable resource for their users. The forums supplement their documentation (well, actually they often supersede their documentation) and reduce strain on their over worked and under staffed customer support. I could have filed a ticket requesting assistance but 1) there isn't anyone working CS on the weekends and 2) I might get a useful response in a week or two (might be faster, might be longer .... who knows, but the forums it will typically be in a few minutes).

I the distant past, DAZ would have found a way to notify the users. IIRC there was a long outage several years ago and they did set up a page where forum traffic was redirected to keep their customers updated on what had happened and their progress in fixing the problem(s). Not a word this time! They have this big social media "presence" that they have been pushing users to, but definitely no info on FB (Meta or whatever the rebranding of the month is). Maybe Discord or Twitter had something? It might be OK if they really used their social media presence to interact with the users (well, not for me, because I'm obviously anti-social ... but that's a different story), but it really seems as if it's all just a marketing ploy to increase sales and not really focused on helping the end user. OK, maybe I'm a bit too harsh, since they have done more to provide tutorials and videos on using DS ... but it's primarily a one way street with no one from DAZ hanging out to assist their customers 24x7 (or at least 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week).

I lost too much valuable "fun" time trying to use DS without being able to Google answers on the forum. Now I'm spending time ranting about it, so rant off.

Maybe next weekend I'll have a few more hours to finish what I started over the weekend. Maybe I'll even be able to finish it ..... if I don't need any help remembering how to do something, or the Forums don't become unusable for another weekend!!! devil

You are assuming they give benefits... well besides whoever got to keep the server hamster's corpse... (them's good eats!)... Never speculate on stuff like this out loud... it gives people ideas...

I've always assumed DAZ just keeps cloning their techs and when they break down they toss them into the Clone-A-Tron to recycle them.

But on the off chance they are paying people, let's not give them any ideas cutting corners or trimming anyone away...

But they probably do save a lot with the forums taking up a lot customer service... but the way I see it, a halfway decent hamster costs around $20... if they were to sell one unused office chair they probably have laying around somewhere, they could afford to buy at two mediocre hamsters or four used ones... either way they'd have something to keep the servers running a little longer.

It wouldn't surprise me to hear that the accountant-types are eyeing the forum server(s) and suggesting that they're too expensive.  Besides, we bought you a new server, like, 9 years ago!  wink

I found myself asking (myself) - what do I need those forums for anyway? Sure, they are an outlet for my frustrations but really, I read a lot more than I post because I want to know what is happening, what I may have missed and, most importantly, how to do things in DAZ Studio when I'm not sure or have no clue. That's the main value of the forum for me.

The complaints - yeah, as I say they are a way of people making their frustrations known but, let's be frank, there are quite a lot of frustrations and very little in the way of help or advice from DAZ. We rely on, and value, the help and advice from the mods like Richard but also recognise that those same mods are the firewall protecting the DAZ people from their user-base. In the end, we all want this creative enterprise to be the best it can be.

yep. I don't complain just to hear myself. I've been on this site since the day it opened, and on the forums just as long. It took me quite awhile to move to DS, but I did and went whole soul into it. The one thing I miss the most is staff interaction in the forums. I think the forums should be more "official" integrated into DAZ customer service and tech support. \

Yeah, my main use for the forums are product reviews (complaints, praise, user renders) and product identification. Or tutorials, but not often since they're sometimes buried deep in threads. But yes, the forums definitely help me with shopping.
  • well hopefully the forum stays up at least 2 days, I just got a 2 day ban from Facebook from no doubt a bot.

I won't have anything social to do online af this rate.

  • Anybody else just get another forum error? Feeling like we're not out of the woods, so to speak.

Nope, wasn't just Canada. I'm in Pennsylvania U.S. and the forums were down all day Saturday and all day Sunday. It's a DAZ issue. See the "HOST" error?

I was on the Forum on the weekend.  If you look at the other threads in the Commons you will see that there are posts date-stamped with Saturday and Sunday's dates - so it wasn't down everywhere on Sat. and Sun.

  • AllenArtAllenArt Posts: 7,172

Well, could have been up here too at times, but the times I checked it was down, but I wasn't checking every 2 minutes ;)

I have one of my Daz tabs on auto refresh and it does it every 5 minutes and never once got onto the forums Sat or Sun.
