I have put in a considerable amount of time into this forum as well, from benchmarking threads to attempts at trouble shooting, and so on. So it is not like I am just saying this to be cold, I would lose my posts, too. The fact is nothing lasts forever. The only thing anybody can do is to back up some of these things and have them to post again or post somewhere else. After all, there is no guarantee that Daz will even be here next year, who knows what the future holds, this is a very rapidly moving industry. Microsoft just spent $70 billion buying up Activision, Sony paid over $3 billion for Bungie, Epic has bought Quixel and who knows what else is coming. Daz could get bought out and everything changes (Please note this is a purely hypothetical statement, I am in no way saying that Daz will be bought by anybody). Anything could happen. The Daz servers could go up in flames in a horrible accident. We have seen Daz buy out other sites, and those sites are now gone. I am sure the members of those forums were not happy. But this is how it is, it is a dog eat dog world.
Our forum posts are not exactly easy to find. Remember the forum search is useless. A lot of people still don't know that you can search websites directly in search engines, and new users in particular likely have no idea just how bad the Daz forum search is until they use it. So how many people actually find these kinds of threads? And also keep in mind that some browsers don't show signatures, so those sig links can be lost as well.
A new forum is the lesser of two evils, and a necessary evil. The forums in their current state are simply not acceptible, and do more harm than good for us all. Only certain people who have been using Daz for years even know how to use these forums. Just think for a moment about the new users looking at Daz and wanting to figure it out. Not only do the forums break all the time as the past few days show, but with a terrible search feature they are not going to find any decent help, either. They have to learn how to navigate the forums before they can learn anything about Daz itself! What kind of lunacy is that? So it doesn't even matter how much content we have put into the forums...what good is it if few people ever find that content?
I keep finding more and more 3rd party places discussing Daz, and asking questions that I know are in these forums. I could direct them here...but does it really help them if they still can't find that answer?
Hopefully a forum transfer can migrate some discussions, but if that does not work, we just have to deal with it. These forums need to be burned to the ground and completely replaced. Good grief, we just had like a multiple hour shutdown recently...so nobody got to see any of the threads at all. So again, who does that help? This further demonstrates how bad the situation is. It is time to burn.
I'm getting very frequent gateway errors again already.
I've gotten a few here already today and I haven't even been here as much as usual today. It is unacceptable.
The thing that would fix everything is a NICE BIG SALE!
Totally impressed with you...he'd be in the back garden under a pile of dirt were it me. I'm disabled, depressed and anxious but manage NOT to be obnoxious and have no truck with those who are. Well done you! Though I can lend you a spade if you need one... I hope your MIL is doing ok and can come home soon.
I had one gateway error, and then a few that just ended up being slow loading times (I chuckled when the forums DID load).
If someone is considering setting up new forums - can these old forums be kept in an archive so we can refer to them if we need to?
...some of us who have been around for a while have serious issues with the search engine here. There is no option to specify a search string (series of words together) as it just targets single words so you get a lot of irrelevant hits you have to sift though. There are no date parameters. there is no filtering by thread title, topic date, or community member name (which existed in the old forums before the changeover in 2012). As cobbled together as the old forums were, we didn't have the frequency of "downtime" we are experiencing now.
Many years ago I worked for a multimedia development company back when CR ROMs were just becoming a new technology. One of the most important components of our products was the search engine which had to be both "smart" and accurate so that users didn't waste time. Our mainstay products were medical journal libraries where we not only had to anticipate typos in terms that would make a spelling bee champion cringe, but also handle subjects (including multi word) abstract/article titles so a medical specialist or researcher could readily find what he or she was looking for with the least amount of difficulty or time involvement. One of the tasks I had was to do whatever I could to break the software before we sent the data off to have the "write once" burned for final testing before that was sent off to the duplicating plant. (it was a very involved process back then since the technology was still very new and the disc burning hardware both extremely sensitive and expensive). If we could pull that off almost 35 years ago with DOS based systems (x286/386) it should be a "no brainier" with the level technology we have today.
If a general release product was as flawed as the site is here, it would be very costly to the customers, clients, and the company.
As I've mentioned in regard to other site functions, upgrading a site should be an improvement that enhances, not detracts from the user experience. That has not been the case with either the Forums or the Store lately.
Oh and had another 502 error occur while trying to resubmit this after fixing a typo.
I've already had a couple 504's this morning and quite a few slow load times
Any idea about the coming weekend, do we have to go through cold turkey again?
We have seen similar issues for the last three weekends, I think this one may have lasted longer due to a concatenation of unfortunate coincidences so hopefully even if there is a repeat it might be fixed sooner.
That's the server with the "Anthill Inside" logo sticker, if I am not mistaken.
Got a bad gateway just now. So d**n frustrating, I can't even tell you.
Believe me, we understand the frustration. This is some peoples only form of social interaction for various reasons so it becomes really frustrating and upsetting if you can't use it for an extended period of time.
Let me guess... They have scheduled maintenance tasks to start at 2AM Daz time (11AM my time) on Saturdays...

I just don't get it. I've been retired from working with computer networks and internet connectivity for several years now but even before I retired, firewalls were sophisticated enough to deal with most external influences such as DDoS attacks. And DAZ uses Cloudflare which should take care of all that for them and guarantee uptime - that's why they exist. So I doubt the problem is external.
I can only assume that this is a server problem and, at a guess, more likely to be the forum software itself. As has been opined here often - this forum software is garbage, even compared to Open Source alternatives which drive a lot of heavily populated forums all over the web. Maybe time to schedule a migration and have done with it, DAZ?
All I gotta say is... I've missed you all!!! I go through withdrawl on the weekends that I can't get it to the forum. It's amazing to me how much I miss our chatter ;) Before Daz I never went on forums and was perfectly content to be alone on the internet... Now I'm spoiled ;)
If anyone needs to reach me.. Please do message me on my FB page... Linky is in my signature ;) Stay well one and all.
I've been retired for 13 years now - but back in the day we had on-call after-hours support staff and an open source extensible monitoring system. Among other things, we checked external access to our client-facing web pages and network interface traffic. I just checked and the package (xymon - pronounced 'symon') is still available. Massively customiseable and incredibly easy to install and use.
its been a few years since I supported servers for a living, but we found that server and traffic load balancing were key, as was a really fast and redumdant NAS... I don;t know how DAZ is serverside configured so anything would be a guess as to what breaks and why.
Llola Lane (is that your real name - so DC Comics isn't it?) ... you just seem like one of the nicest people. Every time I read one of your posts I feel ashamed of all my gripes and moans.
Aweeee... Thanks marble ... and it's a long story how I got my Llola Lane name... my real name is Mary :) But I go by either name these days... lol. I've been thinking I need to somehow add Llola Lane to me legally... lol Not sure if that is even possible?
You can definitely change your legal name easily enough, but if you mean more for business purposes, you could set up a DBA.
Don't exactly know, what to think...
If someone reported a well known problem that has been bugging the users at least over a year, and one was asked "Was it some specific page that didn't work?..."
The forum is getting really slow again. How long until it dies?
Don't wanna change my name... Just add Llola Lane to me... since I'm really both. I use Llola Lane for all my gaming... artwork... stories.. etc. So not really a business. Long story... but I never realized how popular Llola would be. I'm all over the internet... if you search for me... make sure you type two L's... or you will find the actress from the Lane sisters... lol.
504 Gateway timeout....here we go....
...yeah, my forum name is that of the longest running and surviving character from the Cyber Role play Game Shadowrun. First created her in 1992 and "updated" the character as new versions of the game were released.
The last time I played a version of her was before the covid lockdown put an end to our local Missions group's gaming sessions. they tried to continue with it online but a few members (such as myself) were not set up for live-streaming sessions (I had no camera along with a slow connection which would freeze up). the FB page is still there but not much new activity.
