I hate Discord. By default every single channel seems to give you notifications and I have to go in and turn off notifications for each one. I'm on several channels for support for VR apps & other things and it drives me crazy. Bing, bing, bing all day long till I shut them all down individually.
No, my mileage did not vary one bit. You hit the nail on the head, as they say.
that's because that's a DAZ thing.
Agreed!
Other than being in a coma, there's nothing as boring as NFT.
Discord makes MySpace look like it was designed by the supreme arbiters of good design aesthetic. I joined too (even though the name immediately warns me of trouble as they did choose that name of their own accord didn't they?) as it seems to be the "new hip" way programmers exchange information, succeeding several other message platforms in popularity. I guess they'll be other messaging platforms later too but the list of user names & passwords is becoming unwieldy.
,..I've been to some board meetings which made me feel that way.
Even Willy Shakespeare, the Ol' Bard himself asked that very question...
"To join, or not to join that's a question:
Whether 'tis niftier in mind to suffer
The wheel barrows of implied fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of Tribbles,
And by opposing befriend them: to cry, to sleep.
No more; and by a sleep, to say we nap through
The butt-ache, and billion natural cracks
That unmoisturized flesh is heir to? 'Tis a delusion
Devoutly to wished. To eat pie, to sleep
To sleep perchance to dream of more pie, that's the stuff,
For in that sleep of pie, what dreams of more pie may come,.
When we shuffle off that hat of aluminum foil,
Must give us paws. Furry paws. "
He went on about death, oppression, and bare bodkins a bit longer, but eventually he summed it up...
"If it be for an NFT, then nay
My dignity is worth more to me"
I think what Will was trying to say is... "If you want to join Discord because you genuinely need to, or hate Tribbles, then go for it, but if you are doing it to get a freebie or something NFT related, then you are probably going to have bad dreams about pie and you'll get really dry skin because NFTs are stupid and bad for the environment and do you really want to feel guilty about helping to destroy the planet for a propeller driven jet freebie?"... "is your dignity worth that?"
I'm not a Shakespeare scholar and I probably didn't even remember that whole bit properly, but I know Shakespeare sufficiently well and understand that he warned us about this kind of stuff in his long convoluted soliloquies enough times that we should heed his advice.
If you are going to dump on Discord ... how about getting your facts straight.
#1 Created and made public May 2015 (so no it's not new)
#2 Was created by gamers to chat (not programmers to exchange information)
#3 You can turn off notifications as soon as you join a server, if you do not do this, that's NOT Discords fault
#4 You can join, leave and rejoin as many times as you want (so get the freebies, leave and go back when they have more freebies)
#5 A server can be chaotic, the app itself can NOT chaotic. (Maybe you're in the wrong servers)
#6 Just because Daz decided to create a Discord server for NFT's does not make Discord a bad place to be.
#8 I don't blame Daz for creating a server since the mere mention of NFT's anywhere on these forums brings out the haters, just like this thread has.
If you don't want the freebies due to their connection to NFT's fine, don't get them, your loss and that's the end of the discussion....however, this thread is about Discord, not Daz and not NFT's.
Is Shakespeare okay?
Tribbles are a complicated subject so I'm guessing that's right out...
The dry skin thing probably too...
Honestly, I'm not fond of Shakespeare either, so I'll just refrain from commenting about social media platforms...
Technically I'll probably forget that a few minutes from now, so I apologize in advance.
Also, I'm less of a hater and more of an "Annoying Heckler"... being a hater requires too much focus and commitment.
Actually the thread is about the DAZ/NFT discord, not discord in general, they should probably change the title to why join the "DAZ" discord. I don't have any issues with a group of Daz employees creating a discord for NFT discussion, just stop trying to lure customers in with discounts and freebies just to inflate membership numbers and sway their way of thinking.
...+1 both McGyver and FMSCDesigns
Exactly. DAZ creadted the Discord to push NFTs so most of the negativity here and in other threads has to do with NFTs rather than Discord. I do agree that the thread title should say "DAZ Discord".
I confirm, the problem isn't the platform but who is administrating it.
If NFT was only a server part and the rest for DAZ Studio/Assets they would receive a better feedback.
Actually it's only a big NFT advertising. Even the server logo contain NFT images. Notification are almost only for NFT and the rest is trash (quiz game). Also if you join you can receive pishing advertising because all users are public.
I joined the DAZ Discord purely for the freebies and looked around for a couple of days (that's how long it took me to work out that my account wasn't yet verified, and how to fix it). Personally I don't like it, so I'll be deleting my account, which I've already disabled.
No, I didn't pick up any freebies...
(Edit: weeelllll... not initially anyway. Not until I saw a post in the limited time freebies thread here at DAZ saying a garden-thingy-that-I'll-never-use was free for those on Discord. So I re-downloaded the app, logged in to Discord, re-enabled my account, found the coupon code, got the garden-thingy-that-I'll-never-use for free, re-disabled my Discord account, re-logged out, and re-deleted the app. Maybe I have too much time on my hands?)
Anyway, speaking personally I'm with the Bard on this.
Sometimes the smell of a bad meal prevents the need to actually try it.
*except... **durian.
Oh NOW I get it, then in that famous 'dagger' thing in Macbeth, he foresaw NFTs too, didn't he? It's all in the form I guess:
'Is this a digital image I see before me?' 'No, it's actually just proof of the existence of a place somewhere on the internet where a certain image might or might not be stored at the moment.' (I've modernized the language here a bit, but otherwise ...)
As with anything, you can take an offer or leave it. Read an advertisement or not. Join a channel or not. Daz is a business, so attracting new clients is and should be a priority. A freebie or offer may not excite you, but remember there are others that welcome it. Wouldn't it just be easier to ignore that in which you have no interest?
Or option 3, as has happened with me, try to join and get half way through the joining process and get stuck in limbo, neither joined nor able to register again properly using my login name. Have to confess I don't care enough to be seriously bothered.
I joined the Flowscape Discord and seemed to irritate more than a few by saying that I would appreciate the whole worthwhile content being condensed into one or two sentences on an existing forum by the originator and thereby avoiding having to put up with the wretched mess.
So that's my experience with Discord - failure to complete registration and on the one I registered with, its total content could be summed up in two sentences.
Very true, but why is a "satanic" hand sign chosen as a sign of accession? Strange to me as well as unpleasant.
These days the 'devil horns' hand gesture is much less about invoking the devil and much more about invoking the image of a wild metal fan, the kind of guy who makes that sign with both hands as he embarks on a quest to rock and roll all night (and party ev-er-y day). The hand version of "yeah, woo, let's goooooo!", if you will.
A thumbs-up emoji probably would have made a lot more sense; someone on the Discord team probably thought it was 'too boring.'
More to the point, the association of the hand sign with Satan is a very recent development. Before Aleister Crowley and Black Sabbath, it was used to ward off evil, and has a long history of other uses including in Buddhism. It's kind of like how swastikas have been a symbol of peace and prosperity across many cultures for thousands of years, then someone (edited by mod for language) adopted them to represent a horrific genocidal ideology. That one association is not the whole of their meaning, even if that's what most people associate them with.
Discord mishap aside, Flowscape is a very cool toy!
I like Discord
Unlike a forum it is not made for interesting discussions, as the messages disappear nearly as fast as they appear. Rarely something worth some attention is posted, so one doesn't miss anything vital when not paying attention.
So log into Discord once a day to grab the Freebie - when it's worth it - and then log off again, without looking for anything else on the menu...
I agree. Could not figure it out either. When you search on DAZ-DEALS on Discord nothing comes up.
Apparently Discord is becoming popular for group chat with video and/or audio. They've become successful I guess because it caught on with gamers early on, back in 2015.
They combine the chat/video/call aspect better than other platforms is what I read in a review. But when I got run Discord I can't find any topics in search that interested me and most of the searches just come up "not found" including DAZ-DEALS. So what exactly is DAZ DEALS? If it's about NFTs then I'm not interested at all.
in my experience the main reason gamers like discord is the invite only aspect and everyone one I have been to has file sharing, so think of it as a backdoor private forum for pirates, LOL
Daz-Deals is one of the channels of the official Daz3D Discord server, it won't show up in a search for Discord servers.
Others may disagree and that is fine but there is NOTHING there that interests ME
You're right, it is for the invite aspect, so you don't get all those little kids in there screaming insults and making threats, when you're trying to enjoy a game with friends. The file sharing is for images and video's, so no it's not for pirating. Considering the files size allowed is quite small, you would be hard pressed to upload a 4K or 8K image without the red warning box saying your file is too big. Upload a video more then 15 seconds and you get the red warning box for the same reason. Even if you pay for Nitro you are still limited on file size.
Von Hobo, Discord was created by gamers, so they would not have to be in the toxic chat of the games themselves. You ever try to play a game and have a bunch of 10 yr olds screaming and name calling and making threats, that is why Discord was created, to avoid that. Also...Discords search is not like other places, you can only search for people or the name of a server, that's why you can't find what you're looking for. Even if you find the server you want, you can't get in unless you have an invite code that someone gives you or posts a link to.
I would love to have all you discord haters come to my server and see how much pirating and chaos is going on, or maybe go to WP Guru's server, it's run by Jay Verslius, the same guy who does the Daz+ teaching video's or perhaps Chris Cox server or any number of other servers where all we talk about is using Daz and Blender and other programs and learn from each other. I bet they would love to hear how some think they're sharing pirated files and not the models they created themselves.
Again ... just because Daz has a server for NFT's on discord does NOT mean all servers on discord are for NFT"s or that all servers are chaotic or sharing files illegally.
