If you are trying to make something like a modern household mirror, what you need is glass on top of metal (usually something silver-ish). We ship both a silver preset and a few glass ones, though again you probably want to lower the "Glossy Roughness" on the silver to zero.
Ah, that might explain how things were getting so fuzzy in my mirror tests. OK, I'll try that, thanks for the info.
Edit: a just-after-the-last-second thought, could I use a Geometry Shell as a second top surface in cases where the shape makes a simple primitive impractical?
And what about a mirror (or for that matter plain clear glass) with a frosted pattern — straightforward enough in a 3Delight render, but I haven't quite got my head wrapped around all these new parameters. Should I apply the frosted pattern texture map to Glossy Roughness, or what?
I used the glass over silver approach with a GeoShell on base Genesis. Slow to render, but surprisingly good considering it was at only .31% converged when I stopped it. Genesis and the light tubes were the only things I changed from the default (and I forgot to turn off the headlamp).
Hrmph. I'm hitting some weird problem where older Iray files are crashing any time I try to render. It seems to be choking at failing to find some temp file, I think.
Try emptying your temp folder - on Windows C:\Users\YOU\AppData\Roaming\DAZ3D\Studio4\Temp. If it's already empty, or if that doesn't help, try resetting the render options using the button labelled Defaults.
I'm not able to drag and drop mdl files into the Shader Mixer with released version 4.8.0.55. It worked fine in a previous beta and it works fine in 4.8.0.56 beta. This is what I am doing:
Open DS 4.8.0.55 released version. Switch to Shader Mixer tab. Create a new shader, select all bricks and delete them. Drag any mdl file from D:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\shaders\iray\nvidia. DS shows the circle with the slash symbol and won't add the mdl brick.
Open DS 4.8.0.56 beta version. Switch to Shader Mixer tab. Create a new shader, select all bricks and delete them. Drag any mdl file from D:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4 Public Build\shaders\iray\nvidia. DS shows the + symbol and adds the mdl brick successfully.
Any suggestions? Am I forgetting some kind of preference or configuration that needs to be done in the released version? Can anyone duplicate this problem? I didn't see anything in the 4.8.0.56 beta announcement that would imply something was broken in 4.8.0.55 and fixed in 4.8.0.56.
Did some shaders get deleted between beta and release?
Iray Chrome and a few other things don't seem to exist anymore...
I also noticed chrome disappeared. The mdl file is still there though. I rebuilt the chrome shader with shader mixer. That's how I found that I couldn't drag and drop mdl files in the release version.
Oh joy of joys ... not downloading another beta until pretty please what happened???
Okay, the 4.8 release was NOT supposed to overwrite its beta, it did.
The 4.8 release was supposed to overwrite [or uninstall/install over/whatever] the last version which on my laptop happens to be 4.6.
4.6 is still sitting on my laptop ... and the 4.8 release is also ... the beta is gone.
So a purchased plugin that was not loading in 4.8, wasn't because it was loading in 4.6 where it appears to work just fine.
Not so though in the 4.8 which the plugins installer was tricked into installing there as well by renaming the folders.
So it launches but there are other issues which hopefully somebody's technical savy will fix.
I have deleted all shortcuts to D/S from the desktop.
I have renamed those 2 folders so I know now what is where; I have made new desktop shortcuts.
Technical savy has concluded that the installation of 4.8 is amiss, the temp folders would be too and gee ... this must be popular right now.
Okay, so I went to the temp folders and tried for a manual change ... and that really did not work, so put the folders back ...
Went to the Control Panel to deinstall D/S4.8
I will let you guys in on a little secret. A Deinstaller is supposed to deinstall something called its program NOT "just itself".
So reinstalling the beta should prove either interesting or disastrous.
Silly question, which folder is the log file in? Thanks.
If you have DAZ Studio open, go to the Help->Troubleshooting menu. hold down the control key while selecting View Log File... It will open the folder that contains the log file.
I installed the latest update through DIM and was anxious to get busy but now all my Smart Content is missing. Re-importing metadata didn't help. As for content paths, I didn't change a gosh darn thing but DIM and DS both say content is going to the same place. So, here's a bug to fix. I did nothing other than update DS through DIM.
Oh, and I can still see the content and load the content via the Content Library pane.

In the Content Library options menu (rectangle with horizontal lines in the upper corner) is the "Start CMS" option available, and does it solve the problem?
There is nothing in the options menu that says "Start CMS" just "Content DB Maintenance" and a few pane options. However, this is new, there is a button at the bottom the the pane that says "Start CMS" and so far clicking that hasn't solved anything.
I got it to work. Somehow the postgreSQL CMS didn't get installed through DIM although I told it to. After installing it, the Smart Content started working again.
Are you using the old Valentina CMS or the new PostgreSQL CMS? There should be a line in the log (Help > Troubleshooting > View Log File) reading something like:
Connected to CMS: PostgreSQL 9.3.4, compiled by Visual C++ build 1600, 64-bit
or else
Failed to Connect to CMS
(search from the bottom of the log file as it appends every time you run DS)
Is the "Start CMS" option there?
Do you have DAZ Install Manager open when launching DS and then close it while DS is opening/running?
Do you use Zone Alarm?
The "Start CMS" option is not on that pane menu but it is a button at the bottom of the pane (never seen that there before)
I do not use Zone Alarm
And the first time I thought it was fixed, DIM was open but then after I closed it the problem came back. But now, DIM is open, then I launched DS, and the problem is still there.
Strange that it connects successfully when DS starts and then stops -- usually when overzealous security programs block something, they always block it. What security programs do you use?

Thank You, Both!

Disregard my last post. Problem is back.
And the log file does say "Connected to CMS: PostgreSQL 9.3.4, compiled by Visual C++ build 1600, 64-bit"

The search function with Content Library doesn't work any longer, either.
I never should have updated DS :( Everything was fine until then.
Can you post a screenshot of where you're seeing the Start CMS button?
Bottom left corner. Don't recall ever seeing that before.
Can you try it from the Content Library pane options menu?
...I have to keep restarting the CMS in Windows Task Manager.
I didn't even know that was there. But yes, I just tried it and nothing's changed.
Strange that it connects successfully when DS starts and then stops -- usually when overzealous security programs block something, they always block it. What security programs do you use?
So it would appear this latest release has some bugs.
McAfee and also Ad-Aware (which I now have disabled).
Why don't you try PostgreSQL CMS?
