If you have PostgreSQL installed, you need to go to the drop-down menu in the Content Library pane, not Preferences, as shown below.

    Thanks, JimmyC_2009

Another question: does anybody have 3Dlight rendering slowing down significantly since 4.8 release? I have same lights that rendered in 5 minutes taking 15 minutes now (same computer, same drivers, same lights, same shaders) or getting stuck on 99%.

I have heard it mentioned, but, I've not really used ordinary 3Delight since this came out, I use Scripted 3Delight a lot now.

    CHEERS!

I'd gladly follow links to such discussions if you have any.

Read through all of the thread, couldn't find it and search did nothing as well. Could it had been some other thread?

Have downloaded the update. Do I need to download any of the additional stuff as well? I'm currently running 4.8.0.55 so I've updated everything that came with that.

No, I don't think any of the content has changed, just the application and plugins.

Oh, try the hotfix one then. I'm sure it's in a 4.8 thread somewhere.

    CHEERS!

Hope the update is more responsive than the initial release. That one's a slug.

    Hi,

I think there are some updates to the Genesis2 skins.
As I rendered one of my characters based on Genesis2 with iRay, he looked like a member of the darkly pigmented people. ;)
After applying the Genesis2 skin material from the content library, he again looked like a middle European.

I have a question regarding the Iray render settings. Can someone please explain to me the difference between
    Infinite Sphere
    Infinite Sphere w/ Ground
    ?
By reading the setting, I would expect that the first has no ground that can catch shadows, but the second has. But when I render, the shadows are "caught" depending on the "Draw Ground" setting.
I'm a tad confused as to wether this should be just one setting in the first place, or if there's indeed a difference.
Can someone help me out and kindly explain this?
    Thank you. :-)

Can DS 4.8 CCT's do Dual Quaternion Skinning?

I believe it's been able to do that for a while. You would choose "General Weightmapping" for your mapping instead of Triax.

Ok, I'll give it a try and see how it works.

and then with the Node Weight Brush tool active go to the Binding tab of Tool Settings and set General Weight Mode to Dual Quaternion.

Can it open older scenes from DS 4.0? Ones that saved in .dsa format? So far I'm not having much luck. The read assets up to 100% and then the program quits.

.dsa is not a scene format, it's a preset (pose, materials, DForm etc.) format.

Sorry. I meant .daz format. Can't get the scenes open in 4.8

Actually, tell me how far back I need to go to get those suckers open. My old computer will be back from the shop soon and I can pull 4.7 or 4.8 (whichever one is on it) and downgrade to 4.6 or maybe even earlier. (Did the .duf format start with 4.5 or was it with one of the incremental upgrades of 4.0. I recently found a .duf file that was dated November 2012.

I found that some .daz scenes saved from 4.0 with clothed Genesis wouldn't open in 4.6 or higher, I think you'd need an early 4.5 to open them.

Thanks. I've got several very complex scenes built during 2012 which I'd really like to save out again in .duf and be able to get into.

Fortunately it only seems to be things produced during most of 2012, but 2012 was a busy year.

Just installed DS 4.8.0.59 and saw an issue already, even before it finished installing! And THIS one will be a game changer, for sure.

WILL DS '59 be able to find and use its own content, which I have had installed in a DS only "runtime", WITHOUT that content manager system? See I won't allow ANY software oriented stuff to run constantly in the background when its attended software is not running. I only allow hardware items to do that. SO, I will uninstall DAZ's Content Management System. OK? Any problems with DS 4.8.0.59 finding its "stuff" manually when I do this? C'mon folks, I am not kidding or skittish.

There is nothing new with reference to the CMS that wasn't in previous 4.xx versions. You do not need CMS in this version to use content, nor in any of the previous DS4.xx versions.

Smart Content will not work, the search function will not work, you will not have Products or Categories, but apart from that, the Content Library pane works as normal, assuming that you tell DS where your content is installed to in the usual way, by going to Edit > Preferences > Content Library > Content Directory Manager, and makes sure that the path to your content is listed as BOTH DAZ Studio Formats AND Poser Formats.

    I missed that part, sorry.

The new CMS (Content Management Service) is now called PostgreSQL, and you can install it from the DIM (DAZ Install Manager). It only runs while DAZ Studio is running, and when you quit out of DS, postgres.exe is removed from Processes in Task Manager.

The new PostgreSQL CMS is only running when DS is running - contrary to the old CMS. Nice! :)
