  • Complaint, or anti-complaint? We've recorded 11.79 inches (about 30 cm) of rain in the last eight weeks. That's 81 percent of what we normally recieve in an entire year.

On the plus side, no forest fires this year.

On the minus side, both my house and my car have sprung leaks.

Non-complaint:  Eyeball is now about 4/5 full and only bothers me when I look straight down.  Doing dishes or peeing is "problematic"indecision.  Otherwise the rest of the eyeball seems to be functioning better than before the crisis.cool  Just another few weeks to go.

This wouldn't help for the doing dishes part, but Harbor Freight used to sell an add-on laser guide for various tools... I'm not sure how one would go about installing it... maybe duct tape or something... definitely not hot glue... I imagine if it were aligned properly the little red dot would be visible enough and probably be helpful... especially at night...
You don't have cats, so that shouldn't be a problem... Of course if you are outside and using a shrub all bets are off as to whether or not a random cat comes along and starts chasing the dot... but maybe that'll teach him not to assume the dot comes without consequences.

Well, it's just a suggestion, but keep on healing and take care of the peeper... the eyeball peeper, not the peeing peeper... or is that a piddler?... either way, take care of the whole you and feel better.

Great idea.yes   And if I get a powerful enough laser, I could start and extinquish fires in one fell swoop.cool

If you couldn't get gen-yoo-ine Lada parts, there was a good chance that a Fiat 124 part would fit.. and on 2CV, yeah cool cars, once you get the hang of the shift pattern.. (never owned one, but have driven one that my mate Georges "rescued")

It was a Soviet era Lada - and it was quite possibly the best non 4wd vehicle I have ever had for a good old Canadian winter.. (and you could start it with a crank..) I realy wanted a Niva..

My father used to have a mid 70s Fiat 124 "Special" ( or Super T... or whatever the nice version was called) when I was a kid... At the time it was a fairly nice car and compared to the other cars I was exposed to in Italy, very easy to drive (well, shift... it was the first manual transmission I ever drove)... A friend of mine who is a European car enthusiast owned or drove a Lada when he was studying abroad and mentioned a few adventures he had repairing it on a budget... he didn't like the 124 either, or most Fiats for that matter, but at least my Dad's wasn't a bad car... then again there were probably tons of mechanical differences between the licensed Soviet models and the actual Fiats... (if they were at all similar, beyond looks)...
I don't recall ever seeing anywhere a crank would attach on that, but then again that's not something one goes looking for and Italy is nothing but mountains, so generally you could always roll downhill to get a car started if you knew what you were doing.
Most of the cars that people had around there were either very bare bones or unusual cars I only later appreciated (like a 60s Citroen 2CV with the canvas roof).

Interesting that car springs can be sprung, and leaks can be sprung in cars.  Does that mean that sprung springs are equivalent to sprung leaks?wink  And just what is "sprunging" anyway?indecision   And watch out for the leek in the boat.laugh

Apparently I think I got some water in my ear and it was bothering me.  I took a bath after lunch and somehow irritated my ears?

Complaint:2 weeks ago my HVAC unit died the DEATH of no return ,So I've been getting estimates from different companies ,only one of which listened to what I want and my budget .Then also needed to have a termite control come out ,termite nest was found in the yard at the base of one of the pines. 1 guy refused service because the opening into the crawl space was too small ,1 never showed up ,the 3rd did show up and went under the house ,while under there he broke a water line , on the plus side he paid to have it repaired but still ,the punches keep coming .This week it has rained alot and the temperature is climbing ,and of course there is a leak in my roof .To be able to sleep my son put in a window unit in my bedroom, and it's only working on high ......which I shouldn't complain about but feel silly using AC and a blanket ........Oh and to top it off my youngest daughter's SO just found out he has rectal cancer ........which makes my complaints seem trival .....

NON-COMPLAINT: My oldest daughter's husband finally went to trial for trying to murder her, and  was found guilty on 3 counts , now we wait to find out the sentencing

My central A/C went out two summers ago.  I bought  a window unit that is not your average unit.  It uses inversion technology.  It runs really quiet, and uses less power.  Last summer, my electric bills were considerably lower than the previous year using the central air.  The thing is made by Midea, called a U-Shaped unit.  Check it out.  We don't set it too cold, we don't like to be cold.  But it does a decent job of keeping it comfortable for us.  If I had the money, I'd get another one for my office.  Last year, my nephew brought an old window unit for my office.  Noisy.  And cold.  But between the two, my house was comfy.  smiley

Are you sure it's just the storage?  Is it a desktop or laptop?  Storage is cheap these days, (unless you're going for super size or speed).  Are you able to replace/rebuild the "C" drive yourself?

Do you have an emergency boot disk?  Sometimes you can access what's on the drive, even though it can't boot.  That happened to me once, years ago.  Was the result of a power outage...a very brief one...but the read head bounced on the boot sector and it couldn't boot.  But with an emergency boot disc, I could read just about everything on it.

Do not give up on the "C" drive device yet.  Try an emergency boot tool from USB or CD.  Buy or download one using another computer.  If that fails, remove the C-drive(and all data drives), buy & install new drive, install new OS, attach old C-drive and try to read.  Or just remove the C-drive and connect to another computer to see if you can at least read & copy your data files from it.

But before panicing and replacing drive, first step is as DanaTA said, to try an emergency boot tool of some sort.

Thank you for that suggestion @DanaTA ,that would work for the summer and maybe I could save some money ,to be able to do something about heat for the winter ,right now I've got a small window AC for the bedroom ,and a couple of box fans in the windows for the rest of the house ......

I admit <while pinned down, kicking and screaming> that CDs & DVDs are old-hat.sad  Gone the way of the punchcard, "Victrola", and typewriter, but despite the fact that even I, now own a couple of computers that don't have an optical drive, I do have a few orphaned PATA and SATA CD/DVD drives in my boxes of retired parts, just in case.indecision  And I even went as far as buying a portable USB CD/DVD drive to carry in my computer toolbag for emergencies on the road.  Because sometimes, CDs are just what you want.smiley  And sometimes, they're all you have.surprise

And for my storage boxes full of CD music collection (90% classical) I stuffed a Sony portable music CD player in one of the boxes, for future music geeks to find.enlightened

I could make a Linux boot USB I guess

You can, but why not use a Win10 boot USB?  or even a USB with a bootable copy of the Win10 installer, doesn't that have some "fixit" tools at the start of the process?  (Don't take my word for it, it's been a year since I used one, and I'm ancient, and I forgot what I had for breakfast this morning.)  Don't make this into a harder problem than it is.

There are any number of free or pay products out there, from Microsoft or others, that let you download a bootable Win10 USB iso.  All you need is a computer, a completely blank USB, and the net.

From what you've said so far, I've gathered that the C-drive could be electronically dead or mechanically dead.  If so, tough luck.sad  But it is more likely just data corrupted, which you might be able to fix, or at least try to copy your DAZ scene files from.indecision

But if you're comfortable with LINUX, go for it.  I used to be a UNIX wizard, but those days are far behind me.  I turned in my wand and pointy hat with the stars & moons on it long ago.  But I still have my metal UNIX license plate.  One of the original 3000 given out at the USENIX technical conference in the early '80s.  (*Ah, memories*)

Anybody got any more details on boot fixing?  Safe places to look or download from on the net?  Microsoft(best) or otherwise(if necessary).

I used to open up computers and replace or upgrade hardware. I used to dual boot Linux and Windows. Now I just don't care. I think I've turned into something like the people who prefer classic cars and think the modern ones will never have the same magic. Except with computers, not cars.

Complaint: I had to scrap my car on Saturday.

The direct reason was because of the exhaust pipe failure. £200 for a pattern pipe, £ 90 to fit it, £110 for the 6 month road tax until its annual safety check, which it would fail due to rust when we need to spend another £750 on welding and a further £160 on 1 year's road tax or scrap it. The car was worth maybe £500. And the manufacturer left Europe in 2013, after discontinuing the model in 2009 they dumped all spares in landfill in Malaysia in 2019.

It was a super little car: A Perodua Kenari identical to the one below

It had an excessively powerful 50 bhp/1 litre engine, room for 4 and plenty of headroom. Also, small enough to fit in our garage built before 1910 for really narrow and short cars. We're going to miss it. The replacement we have, a Toyota Aygo, is bigger on the outside, smaller on the inside and has much worse (harder) suspension and is equipped with a stupidly powerful 67 bhp engine. Fuel consumption is a bit better though at around 75 miles per UK gallon. The car just goes in the garage.

We really need to get our mothballed Maroon & Black 2CV Charleston working again, looks like the one below:

    .

The suspension is about what we need given the current state of the UK roads, with its 15" of rear travel and 12" front travel.

    Regards,

    Richard

Non-complaint:  Thunder.yes  I haven't heard thunder in a very long time, perhaps over a year ago.  Lots of drizzly rain and downpours last year and this, but seldom any real thunder.  We used to get several big thunderstorms during the spring/summer/fall, but last year was just mute wetness.

'Nother non-complaint:  "Big"**(1 ft.diameter) Spider web directly outside my kitchen window glass.  Beautiful, perfect classical spiderweb freshly made last night.smiley  Sometimes the web that appears there periodically all summer long collects dew, and sparkles like gems in the morning light.  The next time that happens I'll try to get a photo.

Complaint:  It's still raining, for days on end.  Drizzle for two days, then deluge yesterday, and more deluge this morning.  The driveway has moved closer to the street and piled at the bottom.frown

** "Big" is relative.  Some Florida spider webs are 6 ft or more, hanging between palm trees, with the center at face height.frown  Walking in Florida wilderness has it's surprises.  Such as sleeping 2 ft. long iguanas falling on your head, or rattlesnakes on the ground, or a 3 inch diameter spider meeting you face to face.surprise  I miss Florida.  I think.indecision
