Sirely you could just make a frame to hold it upside-down, so it was pushing air up into the heated ceiling area rrather than down to the already-cooler floor?  Or even mount it like one of the guns on the Millennium Falcon so you can shoot the air where you want.

I like the Millennium Falcon gimbal mechanism idea... (Blah, blah, blah, etc, etc... lots of stuff about stuff nobody cares about, wood, sawdust, hardware... but surprisingly nothing about squirrels)... and something about a fan.

Well, I'm glad you had already taken steps - after posting I had a terrible feeling I might have instigated something, and your wife would call a hit on me.

Actually, I'd never blame that on you...

    But...

My wife did go to move the fan and she was like "why did you do that, it's so damn heavy now"...

So I kinda may have said "it was Richard Haseltine's idea"...

She grumbled something about "Oh, it was?... was it?... " it wasn't so much the pause afterward, but the sinister narrowing of her eyes as she said "was it" that concerned me...

It was chilling... like that one time I left the toilet seat up and she fell in at night and she asked me about it the next morning...

I blamed it on Muammar Gadhafi and next thing you know...

I'm sure it'll be fine... just don't answer the door or open any large packages for the next couple of weeks... also... maybe sleep under the bed and arrange the pillows and blankets to look like someone is sleeping there... I don't know if that'll work, but it saved the hobbits in Bree, so maybe it works on assassin Tax Robots...?

Also, for reasons of industrial accounting security, assassin Tax Robots don't exist.

Anyway, don't worry, it's probably nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks for the reassurance. I will leave door-opening to my guarnteed unhackable RoboButler, I'm sure that will keep me safe from any totally non-existant threats.

Does Denis have thumbs?... if he does, he's likely found something in that render that might change the course of history and he's trying to avert a catastrophe... I wasn't trying to be clever making a catastrophe pun, but if he's got thumbs, he's probably one of those future space cats sent back in time to keep humanity on track and avert assorted disasters... also, judging by the weather lately, I'm not sure they are doing such a great job, but I'm sure they are doing their best... keeping humans safe and focused is like trying to herd cats... well, regular cats not from the future or space.

It could also be that Denis is being a jerk regardless of thumbfullness... sometimes even benevolent future space cats like to mess with people just for the hell of it.

I have always assumed that global warming was a feline conspiracy anyway - they look cute and appealing on the hearthrug to encourage us to burn more fuel, they knock things off shelves so we have to replace them (and so create additional emissions). I've probably said too much now...

Non-Complaint: One-year whole house duct cleaning is due because of my COPD. I have one concern—my REME HALO® system. This was installed since the last cleaning. Just wonder if they will break it.

[Sigh] Computer Complaint:  My well over a decade old HP laptop is not doing well today.  He's my only laptop, only has 4GB of RAM, runs Win10 slooowly, battery's been replaced once, just a couple years ago.  Rarely gets used anymore because I only used it when on the road or during house-calls, but I always kept it up-to-date with current updates, despite how long it would take.  But today, the update, boogered, failed to reboot.sad  I did manage to reset and reboot, and download and reinstall the updates, but when I'd first turned it on, I didn't have it plugged in and it came on for a second then shut off.  Oh, OK, battery's drained for some reason.  I've had it plugged in now for a couple of hours while it was doing the downloads (I TOLD you it was slowcheeky), so I figured the battery would be charged enough now, and pulled the AC cord.  WRONG!  Machine stopped dead, no battery remnant at all.  Instant dead.crying.  So, I plugged it back in, rebooted, tested the system and it seemed to work, so I tried to shut it down properly and now it's just sitting here saying "Gettting Windows ready Don't turn off your computer), [Sigh]  Guess I'll wait for a while and see if things tidy up by themselves.

I love that old laptop(HP G60-642NR).  Cosmetically it's in perfect condition.yes  I've kept it wrapped in a towel in it's carrying case, never scratched it, kept it polished, kept the screen clean, kept the dust blown out, kept the keys clean and debris out of the keyboard, gave it an SSD drive too.   Looks just as nice as it did when it was new.  But all things are impermanent.  It could be fixable with a new battery, and a reinstall of Win10, but it's maxed out on RAM at 4GB.no  Win10 in 4GB on a slow 2-core CPU runs like a circus fat lady changing clothes in an airplane restroom.frown  Not sure it's worth fixing.

Complaint:  I don't really NEED a new laptop, but I really really WANT a laptop. [sigh]  I guess I could try fixing it, but not sure I want to spend money on another new battery.  Runs fine on AC.  Perhaps I could trim some fat from Win10?

I'm going to have to triage my "NEED" list.indecision

Edited to add:  It seems as if the update issues have been solved.  Yay!   The "Status" dialog says my battery is 84% charged but doesn't change more with continued charging.  The charging light on the front of the laptop blinks when AC is plugged in.  Yet, the power switch does nothing when the AC is unplugged.  Hmmm...indecision

Complaint:  Laptop is now officially boggered:  Continued problems, removed battery, problems persist.  System won't stay running, even when "idle" for more than a few minutes.  Heat problems, fan?  Bad power circuits?  Bit mites chomping on RAM?  Red electron stuck in a blue wire?  Only the shadow knows.frown  I was completely happy, when the laptop was sleeping in its bag on the shelf.  I didn't need the laptop I just wanted to wake it up and feed it a little update.  It must have had a stroke in the middle of its sleep.sad  Moral of story:  Let sleeping dogs lie.indecision

A few moments later, again:  I tried to run a disc check on the SSD, but the machine rebooted before the check was done.  I tried to run a backup to external drive which went along fine for about 20 minutes then the system died.  I used the Corsair SSD utility to check my SSD "C" drive.  Seems OK, functionally.  But at least, the system's been plugged in long enough that the battery now registers 100% charged.yes  But pulling the AC plug kills the machine instantly.  Seems like I can pour 'lectrons into the battery but can't get them back out again.frown  They just leak out while sitting on the shelf.  I have managed to individually save important data from my account, and there wasn't much on there except lots of computer fix-it, and monitoring utilites which I have on USB thumbdrives anyway.  I could strip it naked and reinstall a completely fresh version of Win10.  Just to eliminate OS or data corruption.  I've been monitoring the temperature of the laptop, the CPU, and the SSD.  All seem within normal bounds.  The highest temperature was 61F for a moment, but otherwise hung out either in the 30s or 50s, depending on activity.  I could pull the battery and clean contacts.  Always good to clean contacts.enlightened  Hey, I'm trying to save $500 here.indecision  But even if successful, this laptop is frozen at Win10, with 4GB.  I suppose, also, that I could install a version of LINUX on it, but that ship sailed from me 25 years ago.  I just stood at the dock and watched it sail away.blush

I too have been convinced to get duct cleaning. It wasn't about the air quality. The HVAC guy offered some mumbo jumbo about how, if there's enough gunk in there, the blower could overheat or become frozen in a block of ice or something like that. I don't know. All I know is tomorrow we'll be paying $540 USD after discounts were applied. When I first heard the price, I immediately said no like I did last year. But after listening to the man's explanation, the other person in the room said we should do it. After the man went out to his van, I had a very civil discussion with the other occupant of the home and by the time the man came back, we agreed to do it.

After hearing about the 4 gigabytes of RAM, I was going to suggest installing the Chromium OS on the old laptop. At the time I was using my Chromebook to look at this forum and it runs fine with 4GB of RAM. Of course the only thing it's good for is looking at websites. Google seems to have made an operating system that runs no software at all. I don't think there's an API.

A microsecond here, a microsecond there.  Before you know it, you're talking about some real time there.  Computers were so much more grokable when the "K" was in control.  "M" wasn't bad.  "G" started getting slippery.  And "T" and above terrifies me.indecision

I don't know enough about computers to help. But I did have an issue with a perfectly functioning older laptop that had sat for a long time unused refusing to boot, and it ended up being the CMOS battery.

I think if the defragmenter takes three days to run then it's actually causing the same problems it's meant to solve. If nothing else, I'd empty the recycle bin before trying to defrag.

Complaint:  I just completed a moderately complete(long) description of my efforts to fix my laptop, including testing the CMOS battery.  All to no avail, and the beautifully crafted report, somehow, evaporated into the ether.angry  Either, man or machine error, I don't care,  I'm not rewriting it. (your win)

The upshot is, the laptop is boogered.  Works, but dies spontaneously, no obvious fix. sad I'm not going to replace it (yet).  Might use it if absolutely necessary and not mission critical, remembering that death can come at any moment.  It's old it needs its rest.  I must learn to let go.angel

Not so much of a complaint...

I just got back from Montauk... I didn't intend to go out that far, I was just going to drive to Sag Harbor with my daughter... she had some studying to do and likes to study in moving vehicles, so I was going to drive to this ice cream place Sag Harbor and then go back home... but when I got there the ice cream place was closed and the west bound traffic was an endless stream of Mercedes, BMWs, Teslas and Porsches... so I decided to just keep going East till I ran out of Long Island, hoping that by the time I got to the end (which is Montauk point, on tge south fork)... there'd be less rich people going back to NYC hogging up the road... I swear, you'd think they were giving away free Porsche Cayennes there were so many of them... I though the Maserati SUV was the more popular one recently, but apparently the Cayenne is really popular at the moment.

Anyway there's a pretty famous lighthouse over there in Montauk which they've been fixing up for a few years... I declined to pay the $15 to go up inside, basically because it was only going to be open another 20 minutes and the extremely overly nice fellow at the ticket booth told me my Empire Pass (state park pass) wasn't applicable... we walked around on the rocks and beaches for a while... there are no seals there at this time of year, so honestly it's really boring, not to mention it was extremely cloudy and humid and looked like a storm was going to occur any moment... Which apparently is the best time to go climbing on rocks... I did get lots of great granite texture pics... and met a creepy cormorant... probably a double crested cormorant, because they are pretty common... though, I thought they usually have weird green or gray green eyes, and this one had orange eyes... who knows maybe he was high or something... He apparently had zero fear of humans, probably because he hangs out where people fish off the rocks and bums fish off them.

Well, there wasn't much else to do and it was either going to rain real soon or it was getting prematurely dark, so we left and had to face the tourists flocking back to the city... boooo!

Actually it's not that bad if you know short cuts and are smart enough to avoid route 27 (AKA: Sunrise Highway)... over there it's not much of a highway yet, but since thats how most of the vacationers get there thats how they go home... the trick is to use various backroads and get to 27A... also known as Montauk Highway... it's not much of a real highway (maybe in the 1800s it could have been considered one), it's basically a two lane road that runs parallel to the south shore and if you are ever visit the south fork, it's usually the better route going back west on weekends... but it's long and most of it is a bit winding and low speed...

So not really a complaint, I'm just tired and damp because we drive with the windows open so we can blast the radio and get insects in the car and it never actually rained much, so it's just gotten progressively more and more humid and I'm drenched and sticky... and I'm waiting to shower because apparently every bathroom in this house is currently occupied.

(actual complaint... I wrote that two hours ago and forgot to hit "Post Comment")

    lol

I hope she had a good time. I've worked outside most of my life. I have a wicked sense of direction and guesstimate time within 10 minutes of actual time. Once, someone asked me if I knew where I was at. I would say yes, I am around 38 latitude -90 longitude. Did'nt tell him I have collections of maps around here for orienteering.

Wooo-hooo my county is under a flood watch until 2:00 PM tomorrow!... Wait... whaaaat?... nonsense... it barely rains in the summer on the south shore.

...hmmm Porsche Cayennes, I see far to many of them in the neighbourhood of Portland where I live.   I like to refer to them as "uslesSUVs" as they are nothing but "image"  Taking them off road would likely result in thousands (maybe tens of thousands) of dollars in damage..  Crikey, even Bentley and Rolls Royce are making them too.

I really hoped that SUVs would have gone the way of the "T-Top", Landau roof, fake spoke wheels, and opera windows after the scene below from The Simpsons aired.  Unfortunately car companies keep churning them out and people keep driving them..

Yes!yes someone who remembers (or is at least aware of) the ancient times.  I'd send you a Kudo, but I can't attach images.sad

Non-related non-complaint:  Eyeball air bubble.  Continuing to shrink, now it's mostly just like having a giant drop of water on the bottom of my eyeglasses that won't shake off.  I can now, when seated at my computer, see my keyboard and hands with both eyes, but my wrists are blocked by the bubble in the right eye.  I keep wanting to reach up and flick the water off my glasses, but quickly remember, oh yeah, I'm not wearing glasses.frown  Still getting reflections from the undersurface of the liquid.  Very annoying for low altitude light, like bright red pilot lights on electronic gizmos near the floor (It's like christmas around here when the room lights are off).

If you deal with very large files and if you're using a hard drive (HDD) then having vast areas of concatenated free space helps speed things up a bit until you hit buffer limits.  But yeah, defragmenting huge spaces gets tedious and not regularly needed anymore, even on large HDDs more frequently than once or twice a year, depending on useage.  SSDs on the otherhand don't really benefit from it.   And since defragmenting bazillions of small files can involve repetative writes to the same blocks, you eat away at the write-lifetime of the SSD cells.  And besides during normal computer operations, the SSD controller is thinking three steps ahead of you and the CPU, cramming data in and out of any appropriate place in memory, at electron speed, without worrying about physical things like rotation latency or head travel.  And is knitting a sweater in its spare time.

But I agree, looking at a defrag map with vast plains of uncluttered areas is very soul satisfying.yes  It's like a rack of hand washed clean dishes, or a freshly mowed lawn.  Or Venitian blinds, with no slat out of place.  Or all your vegetable cans in your cupboard sorted by type and all the labels facing forward.  Or all your nic-nacs still placed precisely where you had purposely set them  5 years ago, and you can tell by the dust hole when they are lifted.  Or, ...blush
