...yeah the Safeway a couple blocks form me used to sell it but then they started discontinuing items I liked and are often out if what I was going to shop for (even though their site says "in stock").

The management there isn't the best, but it's only a short walk instead of almost a mile to the Fred Meyer's which usually entails a transfer between the street tram and a bus as I'm not up to lugging two bags of groceries that far.

Complaint:  My air-conditioner isn't up to the job this year.  Humidity high, temp in my TV chair is 81F.no  The A/C is at least 10 years old and is making a lot more noise than it used to.  It's a Sears/Kenmore 8,000 BTU unit bought back when there was a Sears.frown  Is it worth having it checked for needing a coolant refill?   Although, I've already found a bigger replacement  (12,000 BTU) via Amazon.   Now I just need to find the $$$.indecision   HOWEVER, a bigger unit means more weight, and I'm just barely able to lift the smaller unit into/outof the window each season.  I'll have to rely on the neighbor for this now too.  I hate giving up autonomy.sad  I may have to spend the summer up in my bedroom where the A/C is.indecision

    ...

Now here's a complaint I can get in on.  I miss my old Carrier through the wall 8,000 BTU air conditioner.  It was fantastic until some tree dropped a seed pod or something in ita bunch of years ago. Maybe it was a bird practicing bombing runs. I don't know but it died that season. The carcass is still in the wall.  I gave up trying to find a replacement because it's in a sleeve with frame and needs something wth similar demensions and would probably still need to have the sleeve replaced. It kept the kitchen and living room cool even with the stupid 5-panel bay with that lets the Sunshine in.

I pretty sure the old AC's from the '70s, or so, didn't use the trick of pooling water to splash on the coils.  They drained condensate better.  They didn't spit water into the living environment and they didn't rust out as fast.  I've been going through a new 5,000 BTU unit in the Rec room each Summer for years now because they just mold up and rust out. They don't look like they'd go back together solidly if they were taken apart and cleaned.  I'm not really interested in handling all that mold anytway.

Good luck with whatever you choose to replace it.  Couldn't hurt to get some estimates on an inspection and refill, right?

Have you seen the new ones from Midea?  Super quiet!  I have an 8,000 BTU unit.

Years ago, people on the Missouri side of Kansas City used to refer to drivers on the other side as "Kansas drivers". Not just because they were Kansas drivers, but also to suggest that drivers in Kansas were uniquely worse than Missouri ones. Since that time, the Missouri drivers have caught up to the Kansas drivers in terms of ineptness. But back then, I was on Interstate Highway 435, which is a big circle with one half of the circle in each state. I intended to head toward Missouri but I went the wrong direction. Looking around me at the sheer madness taking place on the highway, I thought to myself, "I must be in Kansas", and turned around. Well I made it home.

    1. About LG's complaint about his A/C that makes more noise than it used to - I make more noise than I used to.

    2. About McGyver's complaint about stupid drivers - I have thought for some time that there are several generations of drivers on the road who learned to drive by playing Grand Theft Auto, or perhaps Mario Kart.

It would be better to have Tea Leaves. Powered tea and teabags will last up to 18, months whereas leaves last longer, up to 10+ years without losing much quality. I switched to leaves a long time ago. I don't like the taste of paper.

Yeah, I checked out those units when you mentioned them a while back.  Unfortunately, my A/C unit has to be upstairs in my bedroom and unless the rear angled wall support legs are removable, I can't use that design because the window sill is only a couple inches above the shingles of the porch roof of the only windows that I have that are big enough for an A/C unit.sad  Yeah, everything can be modified, but I don't have the right implements of destruction, or the energy, or the will.indecision

Complaint:  I've forgotten how to cook:surprise  Argh..., I've been an under-incomed bachelor for more than two decades, I've been eating and cooking "Hamburger Helper" box meals every week(nonot exclusivelycheeky).  Today I happily dumped the milk, water, butter, powdered sauce, and elbow macaroni into the pan and started to cook it, but something looked wrong.indecision  It took me a moment, but before the butter had melted I realized I'd forgotten the hamburg  Oy!frown  Out comes my spare fry pan, covered with a year of dust.  Cleaned it, pulled the hamburg from the refrigerator, cooked the hamburg quickly, while slowly heating the still soaking macaroni for the 4 or 5 minutes it took to force the hamburg to cook, then drained it, and dumped the hamburg into the half cooked sauce/macaroni in the orignal fry pan, turned up the heat and finished cooking it.  All done now, it looks OK.  But, then again, how can you ruin Hamburger Helper?indecision  Senility creeping up from behind.sad

    Complaint: All tower fans suck.

Tower Fan: A generally efficient linear blower mounted sideways so as to become inefficient by nature of stupid design.

Yes, of course they suck... all fans suck... air in from the back and blow it out the front, but tower fans all do it stupidly... some are less stupid, but most are just awful... if you want your knees cooled, I suppose they are great, but for effectively moving air around they fail... I'm sitting here with one of our better ones... it's actually slightly taller than the others, but seated, the air movement only comes up to where my ribs end... so my elbows are comfortable if they are on the armrests of the chair, but if they are on the desk, not so much.

Technically, if I'm not mistaken the advantage of linear blowers is that they are more efficient in moving larger volumes of air for the amount of electricity used... something about cavitation or leading edge compression... I dunno, I probably replaced that info with the lyrics to a song or graphics card stats for a card I can't afford... but whatever, they don't need as powerful a motor... but tower fans just blow the cool air at knee level around without mixing it with the hot air higher up... yes... you can set them all oscillate, but don't get me started on that... for most room setups, it makes more sense to set a fan , pointing slightly up, to blow in one direction (depending on obstructions and various other factors so as to create a good airflow pattern... oscillation just keeps messing up the pattern because it's generally way too wide a sweeping pattern that it immediately disturbs whatever flow is started... imagine being on a boat trying to go anywhere with an outboard motor that you keep swishing left and right... there is also the aquarium filter analogy, but I think it's clear that it's not doing the best at effectively moving air that way... I have yet to see a tower fan that has adjustable vanes to direct air upwards either... nor are there any that are chest height like a traditional bladed pedestal fan...

But of course being that tower fans are what people want because that's almost all they are being offered, there are very few decent pedestal fans around anymore.

You can get them online, but it's entirely hit or miss with quality, and most stores just have one janky looking model that looks like it'll fall apart in a couple of hours... Tower fans though are everywhere... granted there are plenty of halfway decent floor fans and at least you can aim them upwards, but they are awkward if there is furniture in the room that remotely interferes with airflow.

I actually bought a $20 "box" type floor fan for my shop, which I made a stand for that allows it to pivot like a floor fan, but at chest height... it's too cumbersome for use in the house (it's made out of wood) ... also it sounds like a B-17 idling on the tarmac, so it's only really useful in the shop... but damn does that thing move air.

    Complaint over.

    Complaint: Nightmares.

In the depths of slumber's embrace,

A troubled soul finds no solace or grace.

A person tormented, lost in the night,

Where nightmares dwell, concealed from sight.

Within the realm of twisted dreams,

A tempest rages, tearing at seams.

The shadows dance, in sinister glee,

As the dreamer battles what only they can see.

But alas, a tragedy unfolds, unseen,

As reality merges with dreams so mean.

His restless limbs, a tempestuous plight,

In the arms of his beloved, his dear wife.

With clenched fists and aimless strikes,

Innocence shatters, hearts left in tatters.

For in the depths of his troubled sleep,

His actions cruel, his soul does weep.

Oh, cursed affliction, this nocturnal blight

How it distorts love's gentle light.

The morning sun reveals the marks,

An unwelcome reminder of nightmares stark.

Yet, let us not judge this tormented soul,

For demons grasp tightly, taking their toll.

Seek compassion, understanding in the dark,

For even within nightmares, love leaves its mark.

May healing hands embrace their wounds,

And compassion guide them through the gloom.

Let awareness awaken, so they may find,

A path to peace, with nightmares left behind.

For love's true essence shall not be deceived,

By the terrors of dreams, however aggrieved.

Together, they'll conquer this nocturnal strife,

And forge a future, free from nightmares' grip, in life.

Sirely you could just make a frame to hold it upside-down, so it was pushing air up into the heated ceiling area rrather than down to the already-cooler floor?  Or even mount it like one of the guns on the Millennium Falcon so you can shoot the air where you want.

Confusing Tower Fans:  I'm sorry, but I'm a computer nerd and when I read "tower fans" I immediately thought of case fans in computer tower cases.  Many confusions later I realized my error.  At one point I was muttering to myself, well, if the fans are blowing on your knees, move the case somewhere else, silly rabbit.indecision

Non-complaint:  I think my neighbor (across my driveway) is planning on having a yard sale this weekend or soon.  I live right next to an old "Dairy-Queen" type of establishment, that sold hamburgers, hot dogs, soft ice cream, chips, etc.  It was not a franchise, just privately owned.  It was active for about 15 years during the '60s & 70s, but has stood idle for decades.  The new owners of the property live in the house about 200 feet up the side of the hill and use the old building for storage.

For a few days, I've been watching the owner and a friend remove the old chest freezer and the old commercial upright glass door freezer.  Today I saw them bringing old bikes and some homemade "SALE" signs, like for a yard sale.  They spent a couple hours in the building moving things about.  It remains to be seen if they were just making room for more junk or if they're preparing to get rid of it profitably.

Yes, that is the old building that was called "The Whirl-In" ice-cream stand that was sometimes featured in the Marmaduke newspaper cartoon strip.  Cool!cool  Brad Anderson, grew up in this area.  Wheee... this area is famous for people who escaped from here.  Brad Anderson(Marmaduke), Lucille Ball(I Love Lucy), Roger Tory Peterson(bird books), and Robert H. Jackson(Supreme Court Justice).wink

I like the Millennium Falcon gimbal mechanism idea... like a ball turret on a WW2 bomber...  That could have been achieved with a squared "Y" shaped bracket, that can rotate from the center of the vertical axis as well as the sides (if it were metal... I hate welding and brazing), but since I made it out of wood (lazy way), the current version just tilts from the sides so it can point up or down and y-axis rotation is achieved by reorienting the base... I'm afraid if it were just a frame pointing up that would suck up all the spiders that make up the majority of the structure of the house... in the shop that would be a lot more sawdust, metal grindings and concrete dust in the atmosphere than is conducive to breathing... also there are lots more spiders in the garage... and cave crickets too... and earwigs... and centipedes... and sometimes field mice... mostly spiders... lots and lots of spiders...

Actually, after I made that earlier complaint I took a bunch of scrap pressboard (chipboard, fiberboard, particleboard... basically all IKEA wood) and made a little box base that raises the living room tower fan off the ground about 50 cm... I glued a paver block in it for stability, so it shouldn't tip over easily.

Probably shouldn't... I feel like two pavers would have been better as it's on carpet... but I painted it and now it's sealed inside... I probably will make an improved version for my desk area.

I don't know if that's about 3D content or actual physical products, but yeah, in regards to physical items, I hate fixing or modifying something I just bought so it can actually do what it was supposed to do... but since most people throw stuff out if it displeases them as opposed to returning, no body is inclined to make stuff better.

I have a friend who gave me a brand new office type color laser copier... he offered it to me for parts, so I assumed it was dead... so I started taking it apart, but got interrupted so I put it a big box meaning to go back to disassembling it... when I saw my friend later, I asked what was the problem and basically the manufacturer wouldn't effectively help with trouble shooting, so he bought a different brand... he was going to throw it out, but he remembered I strip out parts and hardware, so he gave it to me instead of the garbage truck... if I get around to putting it back together at some point, I have a basically brand new Brother office laser color copier... That's a little extreme, but people do stuff like that all the time, especially if they have a higher income and too many manufacturers count on that kind of behavior.

I had an iOmega Zip 100 drive...it was not IDE, it was SCSI (prnounced Scuzzi).  A year or two back, I finally brought it to Staples for the recycling program.  But I still have empty zip disks, in a little organizer made for them.  100 MB...what would fit on one of those these days?  laugh

I had a couple of the old blue Zip100 models.  One of them finally succumed to the click-of-death.  The other I disposed of a few years ago, along with a 250 model that I'd picked up a few years later.  I'd worked with SCSI models but my personal ones weren't.

    the hilarity continues

I am reimporting all my Thumbnails at a uniform size (as big as can be now  but not as big as were) and Malwarebytes decides to quarantine DIM

restored it but also I think I know now why my data drive was dropped off my Win7 machine

I suspect one of those registry files is related to my drive but running CHKDSK probably updated the driver

I'm not Richard Hasletine, but I did know a cat that looked just like the one he uses as an avatar... well, that cat was slightly fatter (he was actually what scientists call "pudgy"... not all scientists, just judgie mean ones) and he also smoked a cigar, had a mustache and smelled like deep fried egg rolls... so I guess that qualifies me to pretend to know enough about what is causing this to make up an answer based on pretty much whatever the random misfiring neurons in my synaptic array fabricate...

    Gribblenork, koppang tiskinarkjnooglefark balkarp Kvistbro....

Woooh... okay, I'll dial that back a bit... a little too much misfiring or too much IKEA furniture...

Now I forgot what I was going to say...

Going back and reading the question is not an option because dwelling on the past isn't a great idea... it's cost mankind too much sorrow and regret and it leads to regrets and acts of revenge and since most acts of revenge are illegal, it's not even fun anymore...

Anyway... What the hell is "gribblenork"?... I can see that because it's still in the text box... the last two sound like Swedish furniture flavors... and I've got no idea what "tiskinarkjnooglefark" is... it can't be a Swedish furniture flavor because the "Os" aren't screaming... Ö... you see that right?...
It looks like the "O" has a set of little eyeballs on top and someone told it its car was getting towed away in the parking lot and it suddenly remembered it had a lot of unpaid parking tickets...

Ã... that's an "A" with a fancy hairdo... What were we talking about?...

    Swedish Furniture flavors...?

I liked it when they just came as red jelly-like fish... then they started making different colors and they got all jealous of gummy bears and started trying to outdo them... who's going to pay $6000 dollars for a sofa made out of dense red jelly candy?... I'd understand an orange gummy sofa, that's nice, but then you leave the windows open one night and fall asleep on it and then it gets really humid and you are face down on the sofa and next thing you know cockroach scientists are tapping your remains from the hardened gummy sap for DNA so they can make a Holocene Park featuring real humans, but something goes wrong with the park's security system and the humans escape and start using social media and are stomping on the park's guests and eating them and eventually several sequels later they've taken over the word and are trying to use AI to drive taxis and write complex mathematical poetry and are too stupid to understand that if you use AI to do everything, nobody has a job and then they start to eat the rich people and war breaks out and then millions of years later Dinosaur scientists created from AI extrapoled DNA are trying to harness the power of asteroids by landing one in the ocean...

So you see the problem with gummy furniture...

Its probably better off you just buy a regular sofa...

Was that what this was about?... I was hoping it was something like that... If were something like not being able to upload images to the forum or not getting forum notifications, that I couldn't help with and I'd just have to guess at something random like you did something to anger the Server Hamster.

That would be pretty bad, because Bert is normally a pretty chill dude...

Maybe send him an apology or a sack of alfalfa pellets or something... hamsters love alfalfa pellets...

Anyway... I hope that's been helpful.

    Tiskinarkjnooglefark!

furniture made of a synthetic material that looks like gummies would be awesome

not all acrylic or resin as that would give you piles unless it's rigid bits like tables and cupboards, chair frames

one needs a soft furnishing gummy option

Sirely you could just make a frame to hold it upside-down, so it was pushing air up into the heated ceiling area rrather than down to the already-cooler floor?  Or even mount it like one of the guns on the Millennium Falcon so you can shoot the air where you want.

I like the Millennium Falcon gimbal mechanism idea... (Blah, blah, blah, etc, etc... lots of stuff about stuff nobody cares about, wood, sawdust, hardware... but surprisingly nothing about squirrels)... and something about a fan.

Well, I'm glad you had already taken steps - after posting I had a terrible feeling I might have instigated something, and your wife would call a hit on me.

Actually, I'd never blame that on you...

    But...

My wife did go to move the fan and she was like "why did you do that, it's so damn heavy now"...

So I kinda may have said "it was Richard Haseltine's idea"...

She grumbled something about "Oh, it was?... was it?... " it wasn't so much the pause afterward, but the sinister narrowing of her eyes as she said "was it" that concerned me...

It was chilling... like that one time I left the toilet seat up and she fell in at night and she asked me about it the next morning...

I blamed it on Muammar Gadhafi and next thing you know...

I'm sure it'll be fine... just don't answer the door or open any large packages for the next couple of weeks... also... maybe sleep under the bed and arrange the pillows and blankets to look like someone is sleeping there... I don't know if that'll work, but it saved the hobbits in Bree, so maybe it works on assassin Tax Robots...?

Also, for reasons of industrial accounting security, assassin Tax Robots don't exist.

Anyway, don't worry, it's probably nothing to be concerned about.

I alway felt that the "Gummy look" started by Apple at the turn of the century (This century, not the one we grew up saying) died too quickly... My "Blue &  White" G3 Mac was my least boring looking computer ever... the mouse sucked and I probably went overboard buying translucent blue accessories like my AGFA scanner and (Epson?) printer... and making the weird matching desk with translucent white corrugated plastic sides was definitely overboard... Yeah... very "orangeish" wood and a blue-grey laminate desk surface and faux aluminum accents was probably a step too far... but in my defense, I later refinished it to darker red mahogany wood color, black accents and a dark grey stone-like laminate surface... but they were cool for a brief period...

At the time, the company I working at was designing a number of items for clients that were cool translucent colors and I did have lots of fun making the resin castings... think that by the time the trend ended I still wasn't over it... we also made lots of (water clear) prototypes in for Hoya Crystal and Steuben glass, but my favorite was stuff that looked like colored glass... that's probably one of the things that led me to start making water features out of stained glass and stone... of course I chose to start that about fifteen minutes before the "subprime mortgage crisis"... so that wasn't great.

I think a translucent frosted material made of a high durometer silicone (inflatable or liquid filled) material on top of a formed or injection molded furniture shape base structure, could actually work... but for that to be practical it would be really, really expensive and nobody would buy it because right now rich people are only into white on white with darker white accents for everything... that or grey... nothing really has any color anymore, it's like the set of a dystopian colorless Soviet era tragic drama... "Cерый Kартофель"... or "Gray Potato"... The story of how an alcoholic potato farmer who befriends a singing red potato finds his life turned upside-down and ends up becoming an enemy of the state for choosing color over depressing grey.

The problem with the furniture idea having to be expensive is because silicon doesn't really break down and is easy to clean... nobody would ever opt for reasonably priced silicon, they'd make the soft material out of a dirt cheap elastomeric urethane which would get oily and greasy really quickly and would start to dissolve the rigid clear plastic support structure and in like two years it would be a disgusting mess.

But I agree it could be a real cool look again...
