Er... If someone can afford a more powerful computer and high end graphics card without going on a diet of ramen and toast, that's great, but adding more power for the sake of more power, to the point where the use of a product is crippled significantly without the purchase of gear that is way above the normal cost of owning and operating a computer, is more likely to damage the sales of the product in the long run. At the end of the day, DAZ Studio is an entry level CG program, and there is a delicate balance that has to be maintained before the entry level costs for new users are pushed too high above those of other viable options, and an excessivbe reliance on hardware becomes an even bigger albatross when the supplies of the necessary outside equipment become restricted or otherwise compromised. As it is, the deteriorating situation with the assembly plants in China is already throwing monkey wrenches into the production for much bigger companies, with Apple alone losing nearly a billion dollars a week, and I expect that to ultimately impact the cost of just about everything electronic for the immediate future.
This is 100% my feeling including the bit about being sorry.
I would switch only when all the scripts I rely on work and I can replace all the assets I have which don't migrate.
And maybe it's just me, but I don't look at G9 and think "wow". Looks visually the same to me, so the only reason I can see to move is because G8 is being abandoned on this site, although there's no sign of that over at the competision. Now is not a time when many people are inclined to spend money for the sake of it. I have an i9 / 3090 so this is not about computer power. My G8 renders look a lot better than many of the G9 renders because I use the very best assets on the best settings and spend a lot of time nailing the details, including custom morphs to correct anatomical errors in Daz and to make clothing fit properly. It's the skill of the artist (or in my case, patience and hardware!) that makes the difference.
To make me excited, this needed soft body physics, or some killer feature like that, although if the mesh doesn't self-intersect at the shoulders and top of the legs which I have to fix in Blender, that would be good - people's arms done go inside their bodies, and details like that matter. I'd consider it if that is fixed!
...and if you don't have the funds or income, keeping up with the tech curve is difficult at best.
It just means being more resourceful with what you have
I went through a similar computer problem back in the mid 1990s. In this case, I was unable to merely navigate the Internet. I couldn't load most web sites. My PC just wasn't powerful enough. The next problem was with my 2007 iMac. I kept getting error messages saying my software wouldn't work. The computer wasn't powerful enough to run the latest version of the Mac OSx. Fortunately, at the time I already had a newer iMac.
I'm sure that DAZ will survive just fine if some people are no longer able to run DAZ Studio. New customers arrive every day. I sympathize with people who encounter such difficulties, but there comes a time when it's necessary to upgrade, I know it's difficult financially. I live on a fixed, limited income. I am fortunate to have a generous father. But I fear his days are numbered.
My current system can't handle the new features either. I'm looking at upgrading but that takes a lot of money that we just don't have atm. I'm still working with a GTX 960 4gb. The rest of my system is fine still. I just really need to upgrade the GPU but that is even way to expensive than we have atm. I just came back to my desktop after being down fro 2 yrs for medical reasons and now I have to play catch-up.
My current PC has 32GB RAM, a 6GB nvidia video card, etc. Right now I can easily run DAZ Studio and have fun with it. I know that one day, my system won't be enough. That might be the point where I give up on my art pursuits. To be honest, I haven't made much art in over 20 years of fiddling about.
Now I'm 73, and grappling with the oncoming effects of age. My Dad is 95, and his quality of life is very diminished. He may not have long to live. With these experiences, I am forced to continually evaluate my directions in life. I could likely find more satisfaction outside of the 3d Art world.
I've said my piece. I sympathize with those who can't afford to keep up with DAZ Studio. And now I will leave this thread. My best to everyone,
Exactly with what you said and what some others seem to be saying as well. That in my opinion whether it is Genesis 9, or something else it could be making some folks re-evaluate about what content they have already acquired. And with the content that they own now, they know that their current computer system can handle it.
For me whether it is Genesis 9 or something completely different, I know that all of this has made me re-evaluate what 3D content I have now. As I have 3D content that I have not even used yet, one could say that I am a 3D content hoarder. lol
And as others have said I don't really want to be spending a huge amount of money on upgrading my system, as what I have now is still going strong.
The actual sales are 99% for Genesis before version 9, apparently.
The new items have "sale" too, but that is just the introductory sale, and the black friday, and maybe the next ones too :), just hardly ever more than 50% off. Even with new releases, native G9 content doesn't fill hard drives yet, naturally. And yes, 8.1 has many issues, like Gen 8 and Gen 9 existing, but the tooling often not covering Gen 8.1. There is one character converter 8 <-> 8.1 or so, though, so it's not a dead end by that view either.
Obviously there is no obligation to buy early, and there may be reasons to wait and see.
Since generations may have pros and cons and just different characters/items/features, g3+g8 also is an advantage for people buying late (now-ish). Similarly with G9 i would assume more PAs to cover G9+G8 in their works in future, and in the very early stages only a few doing so (some items already exist), just because it involves more complicated workflows and tool setup, which also needs to be tested/QA. Maybe with G9 another issue is, that the artists may have to cover both female and male, if they want their cross-gender items to be optimal, which adds to the overhead (G9 + G8f + G8m), possibly rendering it less opportune to go there. So at least initially some artists might focus on cross-gender G9 rather and some on (G9+G8)-m or -f exclusively, and rather few might do the full course, rendering it more difficult to find uniforms cross-gender and cross-generation, for instance. On the other hand posing and clothing converters keep improving, or at least implementing different concepts, so i am not sure how long this will stay an issue. Maybe some people are waiting for Studio 5 to establish, maybe "Studio 4+5 in parallel" is a hurdle, due to complexity with something like double bookkeeping, say for jumping scripts to a plugin for even better integration. (Scripts already might be incompatible, but probably easily mendable.)
I like that you stated this.
Not to mention what wasn't made that could still be made. It's not like G8/8.1 have been rendered useless. [Punned]
Any G9 characters I purchase going forward will be completely dependent on the quality of the texturing work.
V9 has set a high bar.
A texturing job on par with G8/8.1 just isn't going to be good enough.
That also means I'll have no use for G9 clothing and accessories if I can't get characters I like to use them on.
I'll hold off buying a wardrobe until I see the girls that are going to be, or not be, wearing it.
Discounts on Gen 8 are low if you grab a bunch at one time. If you prefer Gen 8, now is a great time to buy. To see if the price is good enough, just put it in your cart with a buch of other Gen 8 stuff. The more you put in the cart, generally the better the price (for Black Friday sales). If it is not a good deal, delete it from your cart and see if it impacts other items.
Gen 9 is its own thing, not much there yet in terms of content and prices are still high. I think give it a few months to mature. The tech is good though, I really like Gen 9.
...I'm looking at likely one more upgrade but it's over 1,200$ Moving significantly up from a 6 core Bloomfield Xeon to a 16 core Ryzen 5950X. an MSI 570 with PCIe 4.0 slots, and 128 GB of DDR4 3200 (a 128 GB DDR4 kit is not much more than a 64 GB so may as well go for it all, and then if a 3090 or A5000 drops in my lap, I have more than enough memory to support it).
Frank, I needed to upograde my GPU too and went with a RTX 960 12GB and financed it through Affirm to repalcve a GTX 1070 8GB. Only way I could get it with my current financial situration. I know there are several companies out ther like Affirm that are doing this right now. During the Pandemcs when I had some stimulous money, I built a box that can run a 3090 but by the time the 3090's were readily available, all I could afford was a RTX 3060 12GB. Find a way to jump on the 3060 bandwagon and you won't regret it.
On Genesis 9, I dove in hard on VIctoria 9 after the $10.00 coupon came out. Have been buying a few select items but staying away from the bundles for the most part. I did by the Michael 9 HD Action bundle but I wanted everything in it and I picked up the Bachelor and Bacheloredde bundle for like $16.00 after discounmts. Right now waiting on items from other vendors and creating characters by dialspinning. I need a lot of more esoteric clothing and geografts because I do a lot of pinup art with a lot of it portrait type rendors so G9 has reawakened my my interest in digitAL and has become my muse. I have rendered more images in the last two months than in the last 2 years before that.
