Hi Jura
Did you record the time with all 3 devices enabled?
I'm trying to determine if the new beta has fixed the need to turn off the CPU.
Hi there
Will do tests later on and post my results later tonight
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
OK here is my result for all three devices:i7-5820k OC 4.5GHz,Zotac GTX 1080 AMP! core clock 2050MHz/5200MHz at VRAM,EVGA Titan X SC 1490Mhz
Total Rendering Time: 1 minutes 40.29 seconds
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
If that is done with the latest beta, then the CPU added 7 seconds to your time and it looks like load balancing is still not fixed.
Yes latest beta and GPU usage is weird like saw,GPU are not used like should anmd CPU has been pegged at 100% during the render
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
When are they going to release the iray support for stable version? Any news?
There are two 'show stopper' issues that, still need to be addressed...
Just bought a 1070 - wondering if anyone could paraphrase this long thread.
As far as I can tell I need the Beta DS to run Iray on my new card yes ?
Many thanks :)
Yes - That is what you need
As far as I know some using AMD processors still have issues but I have I7 & have no problems using my 1080 with Iray right now
Yes, the AMD processor issue is still a problem...
Thank you :)
I'm considering getting a 1080 GTX card, but there are 3 or 4 models on the market and they are still pricey here in Germany. Reading what I could understand of this thread, it seems after 23 pages that there is a beta of DS that supports the 1060/1070 and 1080 cards but NVidia still has no driver connection to run Iray yet. The Founders Edition card has 1 fan on it, the STRIX has 3 fans and watercooler, and there is a gaming model with 2 fans on it and a shorter card body... Which is the best of them? I hear the STRIX is supposedly the quietest and coolest of them temperature-wise.
Can anyone help me make a decision on the best 1080 to buy? the price is slightly under 800 Euros here which at the moment is around $825.00 USD
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, my GTX 465 is barely managing to render anything with Iray at all. Its painful.
Greetings
Antonio (ProFotograf)
I got an ASUS STRIX GTX 1080 a few weeks ago. It performs really well and renders nicely with Iray in the DS beta. It also play nicely with my second card (ASUS GTX 980). I like the ASUS cards. They have very solid cooling and have been very reliable. I had 7 seven of them over the past 5 years and none of them ever had any problem (they were upgraded because I wanted a faster card or more vram).
It is important to have a solid PSU in your system as these cards draw some serious power. It is not just the total consumption that matters but also the powerdraw on a single rail.
The other key is a well set up and ventilated case. Mine has 8 fans and a watercooled CPU. The 1080 never get above 60C during rendering.
Ciao

@ Why Asus cards?
I do not purchase cards from other board partners because
- I have been happy and accident free with Asus products for many years now
- read a lot of blog posts about issues with cards of other board partners

@ which Asus GTX 1080 STRIX version?
I am content with two
ASUS GeForce GTX 1080 STRIX A8G-GAMING
In just one month the price dropped from CHF 819.- to CHF 758.- (762.65 EUR to 706.16 EUR)

@ is it worth the money to pay more for overclocked cards for rendering?
In general I stay away from heavily overclocked cards for rendering because
- I prefer to rather play it "safe" considering the workstation may run 24h for several days in a row. I have read some random reports in which overclocked cards caused issues.
- I got the impression that overclocked cards will not make that much a difference for rendering purposes to warrant the higher price
-> Maybe someone else can share their impressions if there is some merit to those considerations.
In any case if you do not care about that the more expensive overclocked version is an alternative.

Update/Edit:
removed addtional information to stay on topic.
I got my ZOTAC GTX 1080 Founders Edition and the fan blower has this turbine like noise that is driving me bonkers. The card is idle and the fan is running at 25%. I haven't installed the DAZ Studio Beta.
Black Friday came with a great deal on the Asus TURBO-GTX 1080-8G so I bought one earlier than intended.
Iinstalled it and Daz Studio 4,9,3.128 Public Build +Beta+
Loaded the scene "IrayTestSceneStarterEssentialsOnly",
Rendering using only GPU gives this result:
WARNING: dzneuraymgr.cpp(307): Iray WARNING - module:category(IRAY:RENDER): 1.0 IRAY rend warn : GPU 1 (GeForce GTX 1080) with CUDA compute capability -1.-1 cannot be used by iray.
WARNING: dzneuraymgr.cpp(307): Iray ERROR - module:category(IRAY:RENDER): 1.0 IRAY rend error: Cannot render: found no usable devices.
The resulting rendering is a black image.
Any help appreciated. So far I've tried the original Asus Drivers and the latest Nvidia Drivers with no sucess.
Which processor are you using?
I know there is still a problem with AMD
An old Intel i7 950 @ 3.07 GHz, Windows 7 64-bit with 32 GB memory of which 8 is allocated as a RAM disk.
Basically, AMD processors newer than a Phenom II are fine.
I don't know why it does not work hopefully someone with a similar set up or lots of knowledge on this type of thing will know but while you are waiting -
Does it render if you check off CPU mode & does GPUZ or similar confirm the 1080 card is working for other non Iray things?
I assume you may have more than 1 card added as your error log says Cuda Device 1 & mine always says : CUDA device 0 (GeForce GTX 1080) so I guess if thats the case you could swap the card into a slot you know is working to test that part
Luckily for me, everything just worked as soon as I installed Beta , sorry I can't be of more help :(
What driver version? Sounds like you're running one that is too old.
Probably the correct ansvwer.
I installed the lastest Nvidida drivers, version 375.95 (again) the only difference this second time around was that I updated the Asus Tweaker to the latest version.
Full scene render time in "Gaming" mode: 3 minutes 14.5 seconds
Another happy camper!
Which card would you choose for this upgrade I'm going for in a new rig?
I'd be tempted to say the one with the best cooling options; but be cautious with the one that is over-clocked the most. Rendering is tough on cards; comparing rendering to gaming on cards is like comparing gaming to basic use - in other words, no comparrison.
I have two STRIX cards , from the 900 series and have been happy with them; the 980ti is still working (so far).
A little noise when rendering, but totally silent otherwise. I use SSDs, water cooling for the CPU, and the fan on my PSU makes a noise when I swtich on the PC.
I like quiet. :)
So none of the cards you see in the line up are something to consider? This is all that's offered for this rig configuation options. There are other configurable rigs but for considerably more money. So trying to keep a budget under 2 grand....
I think I may go with the EVGA GeForce® GTX 1080 Hybrid 8GB GDDR5X (Pascal)[VR Ready]

Hi there
Personally I would go with ZOTAC GTX 1080 AMP! Extreme or AMP!,both are great GPU and I've AMP!,this card runs pretty cool, with 65% fan profile my temps are in low 70's and that's with extra GPU(TitanX) which sits next to GTX1080
Regarding the Founders edition, stay away from them, they are very loud and run hot or hotter than AIB and if you planning to water cooling then I would suggest those cards
Regarding the STRIX,have tried and owned 980Ti STIX and 1080 STRIX,I've not been very impressed, due the few issues and mainly no good OC for my needs and regarding the temps, all depends on the case used and cooling,as many test those cards not with cases, but on open air bench tables and due this you will always have higher temps than them
But still I would wait if you can until end of the year, when Ti will be coming out
Hope this helps
Thanks,Jura
I didn't specify a manufacturer when I ordered my computer. They installed an MSI Armor GTX 1080. (From the looks of the screenshot, I suspect you're ordering from CyberPowerPC.com? If you're on their sister site, stop! IBuyPower is more expensive.) So far, it's working just fine, and the entire computer runs surprisingly quiet. (I did puchase the Enermax quiet fan upgrade, though.) The 1080 has two on-board fans. Air cooled, I believe.
ETA: I see I'm too late, but you bought with CyberPowerPC. I've been mostly happy with them.
