Because that is like others complaining about the paucity of male products ain't it? What gets made is what sells best. If DAZ were based in Japan, China, Brazil, or the Congo then you might have a reversal of those sales figures and and then maybe different products being brought to market. And it's already been stated in this thread the Sakura is a character likely on the horizen as she is listed in a fit of a released product. Arabs and Indians and others are white too and many of those characters recently released can easily be from those ethnic groups.
Here is an abbreviated list of ethnicities worldwide:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_contemporary_ethnic_groups
So then those folk at mTV making that show need to get busy and real then as that is a long list.
in the cart, out of the cart ..
n the cart ... should I or shouldn't I? placed Ivan 7 Pro Bundle in there for the free item ... a man ..can you believe it?
Now, should I or shouldn't I ? added that tattoo deal SkinWorks L.I.E. Tattoos for Genesis 3 and 8 only $5.48 with that loyalty discount ....
But now $51 ... could pay my light bill, or maybe buy some real pants for me .. or some winter gloves. Or pay towards my credit card. food ?
need to decide fast ....
DO IT1 DO IT!, DO IT!
Yeah, I was about to pick up Charlotte, but got Marieke instead and for the most part, the head works well without Charlotte, so I am good for now.
why does this say Marieke requires Charlotte 8 ? that part always confuses me about characters
In order for the character to look exactly like the character in the previews/promo images it has to have the listed figure's morph. However many characters look pretty nice even without the other character's morph. If you buy a character and you don't have the "requried character", you just have to realize it's not going to look just like the character shown in the promos since you don't own the morph that the character is based off of.
ah ..thanks ... asnd hopefully not like some of those morphs I churn up ..woow .. scary
Well, I suppose you're right about the order of character releases. I mean, Victoria obviously represents English Caucasian, Stephanie is the All American Girl, Olympia is Greek, Monique is African American, Josie is clearly supposed to be the teen representative and is clearly caucasian. Lucas and Michael are both straight up white guys. Darius is the male Afro American. And now, Charlotte is perhaps, the British Teen to Twenty - but with lots of ethnic addon characters.
Personally, I could care less about the order that the ethnic figures are released in, simply because I usually create my own characters as needed. And, I have a huge runtime full of every ethnicity for G3. But, I can see how you might want to speed things up if you are waiting on a particular ethnic character.
Just by tradition, I will always expect Victoria to be the first release of any new generation - along with Michael as her counterpart. I don't think of this as a political statement as much as following a long time tradition. The original Victoria was the "every woman" base character. So, it was the mesh object and rigging that was important, not the perceived ethnicity - which could be changed by artists and end users as needed. Back in the very early Poser days, you didn't have specific races of base character, but rather a set of morph dials that you could alter race features, and then set the skin tone to approximate what you were after. It's with the advent of "Base Characters" that Daz has opted to make representatives of most general ethnicities. I don't know how much this has to do with racial equality, or simply, marketing to cover a more diverse user group. For whatever reason, I think Daz does a pretty good job of making sure there is enough racial variety to cover the broad ranges.
If I have any slight criticism of the base characters, it's usually that I find them a bit bland and without a lot of personality. This is silly on my part, though. Because the base character should probably be designed for expandibility and adaptation rather than uniqueness.
Sorry, that was the long way round.... I do see your point. I can't say I think it's really a big deal, since more base characters will soon follow...I'm guessing Mei Lin will be up soon...or Aiko. Charlotte was a surprise. But hey, I always look forward to the Asian characters as well. :)
BTW...Who do you think among the Gen3 characters best represented the Hispanic races?
I don't mind the abundance of pretty white girls (or boys for that matter). It's fun to mix and match and make them as diverse as I want them to be. For this girl is 100% Charlotte 8 body, 70% head mixed with Monique 8 and SY faces of Africa. Didn't let it render all the way because it's way past my bedtime.
If I were to say what I'd like to see more of in characters, and it has been happening much more, lately...It is more unique and "real looking" people. I don't care what racial mix. I just like people who look unique and less super model. I still like pretty guys and gals...I just want them to have their own special ugliness that makes them beautiful...like regular folks. :) "Beautiful, not perfect," if that makes any sense.
I find that the "required character" is often more important when there is a major body change like Teen Josie or one of the faeries. Then, the spin off characters are relying more on that base body shape to get the advertised look. On many of the spin off characters that don't require much body adaptation, it's hard to tell that they aren't a standalone product.
For the people who say it's just a matter of skin color--there's actually more nuance than that. Black skin isn't the same as white skin. You can't just "darken" things and have things look right. I actually buy characters more for the skin textures than the morphs (sometimes both of course), since I'm better at making my own morphs than skin textures that look good.
But I wasn't really here to argue; just putting my two cents in as to what I'd like to see. Clearly it is not what most people want to see, or DAZ wouldn't keep putting out white characters. Just wish things were different.
G8F so far seems to be more character actors than supermodels. At least to my eye. All of them attractive, but not the same unrealistically gorgeous of some of the earlier serieses.
As to the propensity of white (but usually tanned) characters, I wouldn't be surprised it it weren't down to those being the easiest for a newbie to light and render and come up with something that they consider attractive. Get outside a certain medium range, and lighting the character attractively gets a lot more difficult.
Good question. I actually can't think of any explicitly Hispanic G3 character. FWSA Oscar's pretty good. But thank Saiyaness for Benita! Obviously, I'm greedy and I want more!
Yours?
No worries about arguing. I was actually interested in your point of view. I'm a Hispanic male. But, I am usually most interested in the Asian and Anime characters. But, that is really only a slight preference...probably due to watching too much anime and martial arts films and Korean soaps on Netflix. ;)
I'm with you on the skins. A well done skin texture is the difference between an okay character and a "real looking" standout.
BTW...If you want a really well done Chinese looking model, check out Raiya's Chiyo...very nicely done. She is much better looking in person than in her promos. :)

I certainly still buy my share of white people, but I agree that unique and "real looking" is high on my list. But what I figure is, we're more likely to get more unique and real looking people if there's more branching out with the racial mixes...
There are certainly a good number of black people in the store; I've been trying to buy them all up (at least G3 & G8) and my wallet is feeling it. But, since a lot of characters are based off of the DAZ base characters, a more diverse base characters will lead to more variety. I get that many people here love Charlotte, but seeing her this morning instead of Mei Lin made me want to cry.
Agree! I have her.
Yeah, Benita is awesome...just not a DO base. I don't think there really is one for either sex.
I was just happy that Charlottte didn't look like another spin of V8 like both Stephanie and Olympia 8 do to my eyes. And, I don't know what they were thinking with Teen Josie 8. She's fine as a platform. But, she has a strange cartoony look to her that doesn't seem right to me. Maybe she's replacing Mika 7 as well.
In any case, I have a feeling the Mei Lin will be along soon...
Which is really strange, given the number of Hispanic people in the world. A DO base for Hispanic characters is long overdue!
Well, there are often included addon Latino / Latina characters in the bundles. Maybe that's why Daz hasn't ever needed to do a Hispanic base character?
Sent you a PM.
Back to Charlotte -
I do really like the character. But, what's the deal with the hair and clothes that are all so similar to everything else that I have in my runtime?
Would be cool if Saiyaness would do a "Benito" tho....lol. I'd buy it, hands down ;).
Laurie
I always saw Sunny as Latina.
She's not any one thing. She's whatever you render her as being. Never judge a base figure by what happens to be included with the 'Starter'/'Pro' bundles, as those are just things the marketing department has thrown in - and most people won't be able to afford those premium bundles.
In regards to what 'Sakura' could be, would have thought past experience would teach us not to even try predicting what a new character could be like, since guesses are always wrong. :)
As for ethnicities, there are usually enough existing characters to simply transfer other skins over. What I lament is how most characters tend to look very similar. This one, for instance, basically feels like Victoria with a rounder face. She actually resembles a lot of Thorne's characters, in so far as she has certain visual similarities to teenagers, but is essentially in an adult body (which is probably why adding youth morphs suits her so well). What I'd like is to see are more truly unique looks. Clea DuVall, Shawnee Smith, Linda Hamilton, etcetera... Examples of actresses who could never be confused for looking like anyone else and possess their own recognised visual 'brand' as a result. The last time I think we had someone with strikingly unique looks was probably either Ivan or George (outside of different ethnicities and stylised cartoon aesthetics).
I find these G8 characters to all have the same large jawline and odd mouths.
And I have not bought 1 new character.
well, if i let it ride like i did with the Darius 8 promos, I wont have to buy her at all. save much $$$$$$ Darius 8 was great with the other 3 pro bundles, none of which I have, but I waited for the Dec. coupons then ended up using them on something else. ... now no coupons ... but $46 for 2 pro bundles is pretty decent .... hmmmmmmmmm .. can i get pro 8 bundles less than $23 each later on ??? that is the question.
I thought Sunny was Hispanic. And to me Charlotte actually looks like an Hispanic mix...
And so this is Katie HD for Charlotte that most probably assume is another pretty blonde white girl, but if you just add a little expression to the face, she is suddenly more real and quirky. At least I think she is... I could have done more but this was just a quick character test. The point, is, use those morphs! What fun is using a character straight out of the box anyway?
