Yea that was a shock to me when I went to look it up and found that they had started to charge for it, but for 20 bucks it is still well worth the money.

cecilia.robinson, thanks so much for all the input on the entries. You took a lot of time to do that. It is very much appreciated. I wish more would do that, it helps all of us grow. I love to see you folks exchanging ideas. It makes us all better artists.

    I am humbled!

    :-)

Dear Music2U4U, it is all my pleasure. The competitions here are a great place to learn, in my humble opinion, even better than tutorials. I am fully aware I have little chances to get even a honourable mention, but hey, it's the things we learn during the contest that are the most important awards we get, right?

Carola, I fully understand your dismay regarding so-called freebies. I had the same feeling when I learnt my beloved Genesis Gorilla used to be free :P! But my advice is: think about a product you want, save your money to buy it, but before you checkout, grab ALL THE FREEBIES. Basically, it looks like you only have to pay for one purchasable to be eligible to get any freebie. This way, you'll have your Hexagon (I grabbed it when it was free, but never had a chance to try it; too busy with DS). Still, I feel it's not the best marketing idea to limit the freebies to Platinum Club. I'm afraid DAZ is not fully aware that a lot of its customers come from countries where dollar is not a native currency. For instance, in most Central European countries like Poland or the Czech Republic, dollar is around three times their native currency (I checked today, the current exchange rate for the American dollar is a little bit more than 3,15 Polish zloty). What I want to put through is that the membership is usually too high a price for them, whereas they too buy from DAZ and used to buy more when there were real monthly freebies. For instance, Mareek from Rendo - the one whose hair I used - is a Pole and I know more guys from these regions who fiddle in DS.

To cut things short, Carola, think about a product you want and when buying it, checkout with all the freebies.

By the way, where can I learn about the August contest please? How are the judges elected and how the awards are selected (I think about what kind of a little gift could I contribute)? Regards and good luck to all.

Dismay? Huh? I wasn't meaning my comment about wishing I started earlier with Daz (while Hexagon were free) to sound like dismay *nibbles lip* as for hte freebies I nab them as soon as I can here from Daz, it's freebies from other places that I've had a problem with more often than not *smiles*

Have to agree with the money matter, but I cna udnerstand that Daz uses the currency they themselves uses. And I'm mostly used to that from buying stuff in Guild Wars 2 for example (who uses Euro, which actually is more expensive for me than the US Dollar :/ ) The only reason I haven't picked Hexagon up yet, is cause theres's been other items that's been more interesting/important and such, but I do plan to pick it up, hopefully when my paycheck arrives next :) I really do wish I didn't had to spend half of the paycheck on my rent.. *laughs*

It's not 20 bucks for a PC member tough, think it's around 13 or something, unless it is a sale going on than it can be cheaper :) (here's hoping it will go on a really deep sale *whistles innocently*)

Oh yes, DAZ is quite rigorous when it comes to quality. You're also right with euro (five zlotys per one, heh!). I remember when Wancow told us his Samantha hair was rejected.

Each month's contest usually begins on either the first day of the month or the last day of the previous month, when the host posts the theme for the month.

This August is a special case, though - our host has already told us what the theme will be.

Judges are chosen from whoever volunteers for the month, and awards are either created by the host or donated by various kind people. Anyone can volunteer to judge, anyone can donate awards, and anyone can volunteer to host a month. (I hosted in May, and it was quite fun. It was quite a bit of work as well - since I don't have the skills to create awards, I had to find people who would donate some...) You volunteer to judge or donate awards by letting the month's host know, and you volunteer to be a host by letting music2u4u know.

On the Kuraiyama Estate (Kuraiyama means "Dark Mountain" in Japanese).

    Tramp,
Ah what can I say. Love in a Summer Garden is so wonderful and you have captured the sense and feeling of that special time. You really went to town on this one. There is attention to detail. I see the use of bump maps, rendering of water and added touches of Japanese garden elements. And Tramp you are a brave man to face me twice. I do so hope that I can explain my actions so that no offense is taken.

    Technical
Your links check out and you have the requisite number of freebies.

    Composition and Artistic
I like the work you have done on Kageto's outfit. He truly looks like a Japanese hero. Having the koi in the water below the bridge is a nice touch as well. But I am really pleased with the attention you paid on the bridge. Those planks look great and the steps look like rock. Very nice. I like the way you used the bridges to lead the eye through the picture. To be truthful with you I say that this render beats your first render hands down.

So these next thoughts are only considerations for you to play with when you do your next render. I have been telling the last few entrants that they should play around with moving the camera after they think they have their final shot ready to go. To me this task is like the flight check you do before you get into the cockpit of a plane. Is everything perfect and are we ready to go.

The following is an exercise I have been doing to show another way to look at creating a picture. I hope you realize that what I am about to talk about did nothing to change your render. Each one of those pixels you controlled and told the computer how to create. All I am doing is showing you what you already have but in a different way. I found a shot that I thought was interesting and I have attached it to this post. I clobbered up your sig on the picture so sorry about that but I did not want to not have it on the render. So the reason I like this shot is because the most interesting thing is bigger. I feel the love more intensely with them being so close to me. I still get the idea that we are in a lord's compound, that it is in the mountains and that Japan is the country we are in. The original render is great for a graphic novel but for contests like this you don't need all the extra real estate because we don't need to know that ninja assassins are coming over the eastern wall in the next 10 seconds and Tommie won't get her kiss from her hero for the next 10 pages. It is this portion of the render that expresses a moment and we can let our imaginations take on the ambiguities of the past, the future and the details of the world we find our love birds in.

So Tramp, dear sir, ENTRY IS ACCEPTED. And as always my comments, ramblings, observations can be used or ignored. If you are happy then I am happy.

So Tramp, dear sir, ENTRY IS ACCEPTED. And as always my comments, ramblings, observations can be used or ignored. If you are happy then I am happy. Thanks for the comments. What you see in this piece is only a fraction of the whole set I built for this environment. It's absolutely huge. I actually had to scale the sky dome up over 1000+ percent to fit it all inside, and actually includes an altered version of the waterfall garden from my previous entry outside the west gate (the camera faces north-by-northwest). I used five mainland planes from the Distant Lands set, as well as almost double that in hills planes from that set and a water plane forming a mountain reservoir which feeds the waterfalls and the waterways running through the estate grounds via the use of linked [Portrait Studios'] Riverbed props and Fairy streamlets pouring over a waterfall. I also used two of the Haru-Goten ground props (one mirrored by scaling it on the X axis by -100%) side-by-side. The bridges in the picture actually replace the far less detailed "stock" bridges which came built into the Haru_Goten set, and are placed in the original positions. In total, the compound boasts close to ten to twelve Oriental Bridges. Overall, this set is easily in excess of 1000 meters across. It's probably the largest environment set I've put together, and really taxed my system. It's absolutely huge. I could probably go bigger if I extended the set out to the south and east. I also need to complete the grounds behind the compound, leading up to the base of the Dark Mountan.

It could probably use another five Mainland planes to the east and south to surround the compound entirely, and I still need to add the Dojo. For interior shots, I've used this dojo, but I'm, not really sure if it's suitable for exterior shots as I'm not sure if the exterior of the dojo is really "complete", if you get my meaning. It also doesn't have opening doors and such. It's a static prop. I'd love to add this as well, but it's in VUE format, so I can't. Whatever I use, it will most likely go in the open area between the main compound and the waterfalls.

Hello, I'm submitting a second version of my patio scene. As you suggested, I moved the camera to the right, rotated it a bit and here we are. This way I was also able to render it much bigger without losing time (in fact, it somehow ended up rendering quicker). The links are the same, just the pond and the flowercrate aren't visible well. The list of what's visible is below.
