This particular type of crash still takes all changes with it whether periodic saves were made or not.

Lightwave gets a little like that in some versions :>)

...yeah, with Daz it's annoying and frustrating, but hey, it is free and Is not like my job depends on it.

However for an industry standard app with a 1,500$ price tag, I'd be screaming bloody murder to NewTek's support dept if I kept losing work because of a bug like this.

...so, I'd like to know where Daz got the Bug Girl pictured in the Gift Card promo in the scrolling marquee.

Definitely not one of the G2F creature shapes.

Oh yes people do all the time, a lot of issues like that get solved by, for example, more RAM in a user's machine or not using spaces in filenames or not generating a zillion polys on a hidden layer or remembering to update the one plugin that's always loaded by that ten year old config file or something XD I tend not to use beta or pre release versions, keeps me out of a lot of trouble XD If I get a version that's rock solid I tend to stick with it until another rock solid version happens :>)

...the situation I keep running into though seems to be so random. Nothing to do with my system settings or specs. Nothing I am doing different than I've done before while working with the scene. Heck this scene is maybe one third the polycount load of the last one I did. Beginning to wonder if this may not be a bug with the viewport's OpenGL display because it only occurs while I am working on a scene, not while rendering.

It certainly wouldn't be with the GPU as a I've worked on files that were way "heavier" polycount wise with multiple characters (up to 6), large sets, lots of smoothing, and/or lots of lights and never had a crash.

I would roll back a version and see if the scenes that crash behave

...it happened with the last version of 4.6 as well, and if I roll back to 4.5, newer scenes will not open (the "this was created in a later version of Daz Studio" error) saved characters will not load meaning I'd have to rebuild them from scratch again and some of the newer content' plugins might not work. More trouble than it is worth.

...I don't see how that could help as Studio apparently is ignoring any saves that were successfully made before it crashes like this. It's kind of like it places any updated file in some sort of temporary buffer instead of writing it directly to disk each time, so when it crashes it takes all the revised information with it (which is why after every few saves, I have been closing and then restarting the application).

If this is the case, that's not very good programming. With most applications that have an autosave you only lose what you did after the last save was executed when they crash or are shut down without saving. It should be the same here. This sounds like a bug.

If files are not saving to the Drive and you get no File can NOT be Written, IE Saved, prompt, then your issue is not DAZ Studio. It's your OS telling DAZ Studio that yes the File did save when in fact the write was never made. This sounds like a Hard Drive or HD Driver error to me. The crash is probably happening as the DAZ Studio TEMP Folder is trying to Update but it also FAIL's to write to the HD.

I've never once had DAZ Studio fail to write a file without a OS Prompt ERROR Window opening.

Have you reported it? I would think that's one bug they'd want to squash as quickly as possible. They wouldn't want word getting around that it doesn't actually save when you tell it to save. Who wants to use an application that behaves like that? There would be another exodus to Poser. They couldn't afford that. I'm wondering about it now, in fact. Should I start my next project in DS 4.6? I have already had memory issues with DS, and video issues. I take quite a while to get scene set up already. I'd get pretty frustrated if that happened to me.

...this only began occurring since the last "public release" update to 4.6 however not with the original commercial release. It also occurred with 4.5.

The crash itself did not occur during a save, it occurred while moving a spotlight.

OH the Beta, I never install Beta's, just for this reason.

...no, I'm using the current "stable" public release: 4.6.1.17. After my experiences with 3Advanced, I stay away from beta releases as well.

...well it happened again with no warning and the last 10 saves I made during the session were once again all lost leaving me at the point where I last saved and closed the programme (about 2 hours worth of work adding lights, adjusting poses, adjusting lights, and flagging shaders to get the effect I need).

Once again it occurred while transitioning a spotlight not during a save.

...and I was getting d**n close to launching the final render.

This is ridiculous, this scene is no where near as complex as others I've done which never crashed once on me.

Have you looked in the options to see if you can choose to force a physical save rather than an in-memory save? I'd look around but I have SQL Server Management Studio Express and Visual Studio Pro 2010 open. I don't think DS will want to even start up at this point.

...I don't know how to do that. I thought that is what I have been doing all along by making all the manual saves.

Doing periodic saves works in other applications, just not here. I've had Excel and Word lock up on me and when I restarted all I lost was what I did after the last autosave.

Heck, FF even remembers what tabs you had open and what sites were on them after being restarted following a crash.

This is really irritating as I cannot remember all the settings I last had and have to guess and everything as well as go through a whole bunch of trial and error and test renders all over again. I saved up for and built this system so this kind of rubbish wouldn't happen anymore. It definitely can't be a memory issue as I have a tonne of overhead while working in OpenGL mode. My OGL driver supports version 4.4. I have 1GB GDDR5 on the GPU and the scene file only takes up 46MB.

Have you checked in the C:/Documents and Settings/User/Application Data/DAZ 3D/Studio4/temp folder to see if maybe they're in there? Just a thought.

...just checked and the only files I could find were all the TDL files for the scene and a few of the early test renders in the Render Album folder.

And Once again I state if DAZ Studio is NOT doing a FULL physical SAVE when you do Save As>Scene File it IS not DAZ Studio but the PC OS failing in some way. The Files List as saved and Display in your Content but are REMOVED when DAZ Studio Crashes. This SAYS plain as day the Files are NOT written to Drive but are Cached by the OS in some location. The Same OS error is causing the crash. Don't listen to me and when the Error creeps into other programs and the PC goes BSOD every boot I'll not say a word.

This can be RAM that Fails as it is Called or Heats up. This can be the OS Ram Driver. This can even be a malware Program not found by your AV or other tools. This Can be a HD head. The PC needs checked. I can list many other causes, all fixable before real damage is done. It could even be a HD issue even NEW hardware can fail.

...I'm just not that good at all this diagnostic and troubleshooting stuff. If I were, I'd be earning money at it as there is a good demand for such services here.

Interesting that my nearly seven year old notebook, which should have succumbed from all the rendering I did on it, has been running much better since I stopped doing 3D work on it. Oh,FF occasionally freezes up from time to time (usually because I have too many tabs open or click a link that turns out to be a 200 page PDF on a slug of a server) but that is about it. All my other apps including GIMP and PSPX3 (which I still use for other purposes) run just fine, albeit slow because it's only a 1.6 gHz duo core running XP32.

Minor Announcement: Is playing Master of Orion 2 again.

Minor Complaint: First game I send two scouts out - one to the east, one to the west. Immediately after landing Scout #1 gets eaten by a Space Dragon (lulz?) the other gets vaporized by the Guardian. Both on the same turn. Lovely. :P

Minor Non-Complaint: Avenged that first scout by chasing the dragon out of the star system and claiming the planet it was guarding (A real nice one too!)

Non-Complaint: Talked with a very good friend of mine for the first time in many months ^_^
