Brush is 800? I got it much cheaper!

They probably upped the price around the time or some time after doing away with the trial/demo version. I remember it being in the $640 range, now it's very very close to $800. *shrugs*

The upgrade alone for C4D was $600, then we also payed $900 upgrade for photoshop, and we have numerous other upgrades and resource sites that we pay every year. we easily pay out $2000 a year just in fees and upgrades. I just that's what happens when you do this for a living. If we get 3DSMax that will be an initial $3700 and then if we pay a subscription plan then we get updates for $600 a year vs. $1200 a year

I'm primarily a Poser user but do mess with DS quite a bit.

was there a layout for DS that doesn't come with it? i vaguely remember reading something.

Base M4 doesn't come with any body morphs, i thought thin and young were base, but iz all part of ++

wuz reading a Falco mystery, they're chasing after a girl who plays some kind of water organ. ancient Rome had water organists? i prolly misread, doing that a lot lately. sigh

Are you talking about Darkside? It was a separate installer but now with DIM it's part of the zip and don't have to install it seperatly

i'm not using DIM. i haven't run the install since 4.5. how long ago was that? lol

    Aiko5 forced me into it.
and after all that i only rendered her once. but now i've learned the shader mixer powers the lights and cameras. should be more enjoyable experience this time.

We may be thinking of two different things. Darkside was available in 4.0 I believe

...yes. Also known as the Hydraulus (Greek). As the description mentions it used air pressure created by water moving through the instrument to sound the pipes.

...here is a video of replica of one being played along with different types of trumpets. Apologies for the length, and for our English speaking audience, the fact the narrative is in German. The actual performance begins at about the 3:10 mark.

    ...Friday complaint:

Running into instability issues with the latest "stable" release of 4.6. Was in the middle of moving a spotlight when the programme crashed to the desktop. In spite of the fact I had saved the file several times after making changes and additions to it (still having some kind of driver issue occasionally forcing a system shutdown and restart) lost pretty much all the work I did after initially setting up the characters.

Been having to save, close the app, restart, and reload the scene every so often as I don't trust it to not do this again (really killing the workflow). What ever had already been saved prior to the crash should not have been lost.

Can't be a memory issue as all 12GB are showing in the system properties so it has to be something in the programme.

I don't think any version since I started using it has ever truly been stable. Close, but I've seen bugs reported, and some experienced by me, in every version that were never fixed. I think it is always in beta. At least it mostly works. I can't complain too much, because I don't really get to use it very often anyway.

    ...it's just so bloody frustrating,

I can set up and render a very large memory intensive scene like the one I submitted to the Growing Up thread that had a several Genesis characters, a lot of reflectivity, and heavy transmaps and everything went fine. However I can be working on a scene like today, and it just barfs while I am performing a very simple task for no apparent reason and in the process takes a lot of work along with it that, had already been saved.

It created the crash dump and I got the bug report notice. I looked at the logfile and the final statement only indicates a successful test render was performed and saved to the .tmp folder. There is nothing else that points to why it crashed during a simple transition move.

It's like the programme logs are pretty much useless in these instances for they seem to cut off before what ever actually causes the crash.

Maybe you should copy your saved scenes to another location/drive so that you can be sure to get them back after a crash. It shouldn't be necessary, but it seems that it is.

...I don't see how that could help as Studio apparently is ignoring any saves that were successfully made before it crashes like this. It's kind of like it places any updated file in some sort of temporary buffer instead of writing it directly to disk each time, so when it crashes it takes all the revised information with it (which is why after every few saves, I have been closing and then restarting the application).

If this is the case, that's not very good programming. With most applications that have an autosave you only lose what you did after the last save was executed when they crash or are shut down without saving. It should be the same here. This sounds like a bug.

...again, it doesn't seem to matter unless I clear the scene from the workspace and memory and then exit the programme.

This particular type of crash still takes all changes with it whether periodic saves were made or not.
