Part of the reason why Journalism is dying (at least here in the US) is that there is no more integrity. "Infotainment" has taken the place of real news reporting, it's all about ratings now, not about actually informing and educating the people. This is why Fox News found it more important to have a live feed of the stricken cruise ship being towed into port on their site's home page rather than any mention of the meteor that exploded over Russia (at the same time an asteroid passed the earth at a distance closer than the moon).

It's why with regards to my local media that a Portland Trailblazers recent win gets coverage when the Senate going on vacation without approving an extension of unemployment benefits does not..

I'm beginning to feel like the character Howard Beale from the film Network.

Sensationalism and fluff sells. Real news doesn't.

When I studied Journalism in High School there was a term 'Yellow Journalism" which related to the idea of sensationalism over content. That is where news writing and reporting has gone today.

I remember seeing an interview on PBS with the now late Walter Cronkite. He basically gave today's news media an enema.

i'll never forget, cnn was showing docking with the soviet space station, human history in the making - then they cut to the oj trial.

Now I remember why I don't want to use uber area light on a single-core computer. 3Delight is slow even when the shadow samples is set to 8. I forgot to hide the plane that has the uber area light surface.

complaint - trying to save the Blender manual to pdf, but it's capturing that pita wiki bar covering over text.

my scifi Aiko render needs a devil dog. or an ice cream sammich.

finally learned how to rotate an object in blender. wire frame mode doesn't show all the edges. can't find to unsmooth the edges.
it handles high polys a lot more than wings.

devil dogs are brown, but not a smidge of chocolatey-ness.

That's not true, they are devil's food cake. I guess that's almost like dark chocolate, but not quite the same. I'm glad they're back...but I can't have them often. Need to get the weight down, not put it up.

Yeah not my creation. If anyone's not getting it, just tilt your head to the right. :)

I think "My brain is full of frogs." would make a great meme, and a much better one than the one that depends on the "f" word. :shut:

i'm already stuck with a plot problem in Lisa. he's the son of a lord of the manor, so of course there's the 'big' secret of the manor. a couple of his new friends are telepaths, how do you hide a shameful secret from telepaths? trying not to resort to the old magic geis that prevents anyone knowing.

    cute frog, er horse :)

Lottery tickets are expenditure, like content, not investments. By the set up the expected return is always negative (on the average you end up with less than you put in - given that some people end up with a lot more that needs a lot of people with a lot less than they put in to balance). As long as you get a dollar's worth of fun out of them, and can afford it, that's fine but don't do it expecting to make the money back or to come out ahead.

...if you do by chance hit all the numbers and take the full "cash out" prize (instead of the annuity payments) don't be surprised that the "take home" it is lower than the actual listed jackpot.

The actual amount a lottery jackpot awarded when taken as a lump sum is 1/2 the face value. The full face value is based on taking the winnings as series of 25 or more annual payments (of course still subject to taxes). So for example, the last Oregon Megabucks jackpot of 2.4$ million only netted the winners 1.2$ million taking the lump sum amount. Out of that sum subtract the state tax (here 8%) then federal tax (35%) and that cheque you have in your hands is now 716,600$. The state takes a cut of 96,000$ and the feds another 386,000$. Furthermore the state is off the hook for having to pay the remaining 1.2$ million of the face value.

So why are many advised to take the lump sum?

Two reasons: First, in doing so you've paid all your taxes up front and the remaining amount is all yours. You have basically locked in your tax rate for good on the winnings. With the annual payments, you pay on each installment and if tax rates go up you end up paying more over the length of the annuity plan. If tax rated remained the same, you'd come out a bit ahead in the long run. However if the go up, you end up paying more. Second, another concern is, will the lottery commission still be there 25 years down the road? If they cease operations, the annual cheques stop coming.

Sadly, these days save for a few select occupational areas (like Government or the railroads) few people have retirement plans or pensions to look forward to here except what little they might have in savings and ]when eligible, a meager SSI Cheque each month That's why many my age,(including myself) keep plunking down our 1$ a in hopes lightning will strike as we feel it is the only chance we have left.

Right now even the base 1$ million prize (≈300,000$ after all the reductions and deductions above) would still set me up for a good while. Better than the options I am looking at right now.

BTW I don't bother with those big national lotteries like the Powerball or Mega Millions. For one, you are not allowed to remain anonymous as the local state Megabucks will let you do. Second, at my age I really don't need that much, just enough to be able to go on with life with the years I have left.

Spiteful = Filled with, prompted by, or showing spite; malicious.

There are several definitions for it

here the rule is black roach good, brown roach bad. We do the cup and cardboard trap with the black ones. You put a cup over them slide cardboard underneath and carry it outside :)

complaint: one of the online games is hard. I'm playing the tutorial mind you. 5 guards against me. lol. And one of the has a rocket launcher. the worst part is that no one can help me because the tutorial is a zone separate from the regular game. I haven's seen another player in the zone.

ok.. gonna take a break before I try the tutorial again. Maybe I should work on my sci-fi scenes in Studio 3.
