I know you have pinned it on the woodpeckers and squirrels, but could it be a pollination issue?  Bees dying off, a few bad years in a row for timing with weather when they flower, tree isn't self-polinating and whatever other tree was needed is now gone, etc.?  I have been fortunate to have some apple trees at my new house and last year only got a handfull of red apples.  I know nothing about orchard keeping yet but decided to try buying a small number of mason bees (you can mail order them from Crown Bee or elsewhere) which are supposedly very efficient pollinators, better than honeybees but much shorter range.  This year whether due to luck or the bees I had a massive number of apples, nothing at all like last year.  I also read (but haven't verified) that if the trees are stressed due to some problem they will produce apples about every other year.

Actually it gets flowers and small fruits, but whatever it gets is decimated by squirrels before the get bigger than a golf ball... Squirrels suck. They take one bite out of a fruit and drop it and move on to another one until there are no more... they don't eat what they drop, so it all rots... they even nibble the budding fruit.  We used to grow corn, but the squirrels would chew the stalks at the base and eat a few unripe kernels and move on to the next plant until they destroyed everything... they are too stupid to realize they don't like unripe corn so they keep trying for better results until they ruin everything... you can't even make it to a full sized stalk... the problem is an overpopulation of squirrels... they have virtually no predators left except for cars.
The woodpeckers have made multiple lines of holes around the circumference of most of the branches, and when that happens the leaves and fruit become stunted and deformed... it's what killed the first tree.
I'd agree about the bees, but there are actually lots of beekeepers in this area for some reason... probably not nearly enough to make a real difference, but it seems to keep an almost "normal" bee population.

....well so far connectivity ills of the last two days. My thoughts are it was construction in downtown that was interfering with the signal again (like happened this past spring), it wasn't completely blocking the signal as I never received a disconnect warning (that little yellow triangle on the icon) but apparently enough to cause very spotty performance.

So I shopped around for a fully wired service but like with the airlines, the choices are pitifully few thanks to all the consolidation in the industry.  Other of wireless and satellite services (the latter which is even worse as it is slower and affected by weather...like rain which we get here frequently) there are only three choices in Portland, all bad. One of the other two (will not bother with Comcast/Xfinity anymore) inadvertently called me after I clicked on the button for more details (I was expecting a new page to open but instead received a call from them which I felt was sort of disconcerting as I only entered my zip code in to see if Fibre Optic was available my area of the city).  After only about a minute or so, I was having misgivings as the person I was talking to had a thick Hindu accent and tried to pressure me into signing up one of the company's plans (80 mbps copper wire as apparently where I am, they have no fibre optic lines).  As I experienced with with Comcast years ago, it was likely an overseas call centre that was on contract with the carrier, not local technical/sales support.

That's the one thing about the carrier I have that I do like, they are local here in the city and know the conditions we face. It's just that wireless, particularly fixed wireless, is susceptible to obstruction of the signal by structures or geography.

Give it a few years and it'll be 80°F every day in January here on Long Island... of course you'll need a submarine or a boat to enjoy that.

Yeah, probably not.  People will be complaining about snow and cold up there a few years from now, and again a few years after that, and after that...

Squirrels can be resolved, so to speak.  You must have a greater will than they do, however.  I think most people don't.

Dana's right.  Too much water, especially all at once, can result in something called "water intoxication".  Which, if serious enough, can result in death.  Indeed, Andy Warhol may have died from this, at least as suspected by his family.

There was a radio contest for some concert tickets or something in the Providence area a few years ago.  Some woman guzzled a lot of water to win.  But she died of water intoxication.  Nothing funny about this at all, you are correct!  Anything to extremes is usually not good.

Ah, bummer.  I had squirrels at my apartment and quickly learned that it was impossible to own lillies.  The instant they sprouted in spring they broke each sprout off and just left them there.  I actually had a squirrel try to nest in one of my potted plants and had to repeatedly evict him from it.  Now it's deer instead of squirrels, still the lillies but also the raspberries, the roses, the small black locust trees (apparently anything with thorns tastes great, no idea how they eat thorns, sounds really painfull to me), small trees that I plant, and they rip off branches up to an inch and half in diameter from the apple trees.  And of course buck rubs.  Unfortunately I'm not a hunter at heart, so they're still doing it.  Ah, the perils of gardening.

I do hope that you have medical reccomendations for that.    Very dangerous thing for even a very healthy person to do,  let alone a diabetic, who needs regular healthy meals - anything  else is asking for a Hypo

Hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar, is a fall in blood sugar to levels below normal. This may result in a variety of symptoms including clumsiness, trouble talking, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures or death. A feeling of hunger, sweating, shakiness and weakness may also be present.
Too much insulin or other diabetes medications may cause your blood sugar level to drop too low, causing hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia may also happen if you don't eat as much food as usual after taking diabetes medication, or if you exercise more than you normally would.

Non-complaint:  Yay!  Laundry's done again.  Caught the morning bus to the city.  While laundry was doing its thing I walked to the drug store for prescriptions.  Then walked to the nearby post office and mailed my Xmas cards.  Stopped for breakfast.  Folded laundry.  Got an Uber back to home.  Busy morning.  Feet still complaining.

Complaint:  Had breakfast at my unfavorite breakfast place (BK) with its super salty stuff.  Since that was one of my now very rare opportunities to eat in a restaurant I splurged and went for their big breakfast with sausage, eggs, pancakes, and fried potato nugget thingies.  Sausage.yes  Eggs.  Homogenously bland.indecision   Potato thingies. Meh, still too salty.frown  Pancakes.no  They had the texture of weak foam rubber, and the fake syrup turned them into disintegrating mush.sad  Left most of 'em on the plate.  I'm rapidly losing the thrill of an out-of-house breakfast despite it being the only place within walking distance of the laundry.

Non-complaint???:  Call me stupid.  Call me indecisive.  Berate me for not being loyal, but I've totally abandoned Windows7! surprise  Yes, after all my moaning about not wanting to give up on Win7 because of many legacy applications that I still use now and then, and going and busting my budget to build me a modern machine on which to run big programs with big data,  After all that, I have upgraded my old, primary, Win7-Pro machine to Win10-Pro.

Why, you may ask?  And I will answer, because it was free.surprisesmileyyes  I knew that sometime in the future it was inevitable.  I had actually considered buying a new copy of Win10-Pro for this machine in the recent sales at NewEgg and Amazon but found it hard to throw about $150 to $200 at them.  I'd read that rumor that the free upgrade deal was still possible and had actually tried a month or so ago but something went wrong when it was trying to prepare my USB memory stick and I gave up.  Then I did some Internet research and got the warm fuzzy feeling that one could still update a properly licensed Win7 machine to Win10 for free by downloading from Microsoft by using the official Microsoft  "MediaCreationTool".  Yes, Microsoft said that their offer for free upgrades had expired long ago but word on the Internet is that it is still honored in many cases.

Over the last couple of days I've been making sure I have all the available Win7 updates properly installed and I tried downloading the MS "MediaCreationTool" again, making sure the USB memory stick was completely empty, and this time the preparation of the memory stick as a Win10 upgrade media worked properly.  Then, making sure that I had a proper backup of my personal data, and a proper backup of my "C:" drive image (in case of disaster), I closed my eyes, started the upgrade from the USB media, answered a few questions then went on a walking tour of this town to get postal mail and groceries.  When I got back I had a properly working Windows10 and it's even "Activated" I never even had to key in my old Win7-Pro license number. smiley

I did lose some of the features of my Microsoft "LifeCam" webcam because win10 no longer supports twiddly adjustments like color balance, etc. but basically the camera still works when I access it via Adobe PremierElements.

I now need to go through the process of testing my installed legacy applications and see what might not work or if there is some way to reinstall in some compatability mode to make it work.

All in all, I'm not yet disappointed at the leap.  All four of my "modern" machines are now Win10 or Win10-Pro.  My brain was getting too old to keep switching gears as I moved from one machine to another.

If worse comes to worse, I believe that there is a way to back out of Win10 and revert to the saved copy of Win7.  But at this time I don't want to think about that new element of risk to my data.  I've been lucky so far.yes

Ah, the perils of gardening.

...deer, such deceptive and malevolent creatures .  They lure people into a state of "aww..." with those big brown eyes of theirs then when your back is turned, rip up and trample your garden and gnaw on your trees.

Maybe getting a big dog might be the cure.

    I blame Bambi.

Me too.  And there's another thing.  Nobody tries to understand the hunter in Bambi's story.  Hey man, he's just trying to feed his family!

Good for you.  This is a smart decision.

Dana's right.  Too much water, especially all at once, can result in something called "water intoxication".  Which, if serious enough, can result in death.  Indeed, Andy Warhol may have died from this, at least as suspected by his family.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication

There was a radio contest for some concert tickets or something in the Providence area a few years ago.  Some woman guzzled a lot of water to win.  But she died of water intoxication.  Nothing funny about this at all, you are correct!  Anything to extremes is usually not good.

I remember the radio station thing.  The jocks got fired and lost their show.  Not sure if they were ever sued, but if the deceased were a member of my family, I sure would have brought suit.

    My new computer "Properties" page.

You can back out, but I seem to recall there is a time limit (and it may be that installing a major service release also removes the ability to back out)

He won't want to back out, I'm almost certain of that.  Windows 10 is far more advanced and usable than Windows 7; especially if he's got meaningful-to-him stuff to do with today's applications and hardware.

OK, this is serious now. It looks like somebody has built the Genesis Device!!! You won't need Hot Pockets if you have one of these in your back yard. Of course Fido may have 6 legs, but piffle. The better to catch those annoying deer!

(Actually there is a freebie 3D model of the Genesis Device, but still...)

..umm, I don't trust nuclear power in the hands of the private utilities. Letting the average household mange it gives me nightmares.

Non-complaint:  Upgraded Win7 to Win10 machine is still working fine.  Have not yet found a software that doesn't work or can't be made to work.

'Nother non-complaint:  I have a 10 (almost 11) year old Win7 laptop that was upgraded to Win10 a year or so ago when Microsoft first offered the upgrade.  It's been working fine for 10 years.  I'm very careful with my toys and it is in pristine condition.  Still shiny.  No scratches or missing labels or worn spots.  It's always been kept wrapped in a terrycloth towel when in its carrying case.  It still looks brand new and is completely functional.  It even has a new battery.yes  It was recently enhanced by replacing the original 750GB HDD with a 1TB SSD to make it run like a race horse despite its age and heavier burden of Win10 vs the original Win7.  Very happy with it.smiley  Lately I've been keeping it on my side desk with the power cord plugged in only when I use it.  Today I went to the HP website and looked up the specs for my laptop (HP G60-642NR) to see if it could be upgraded to 8GB instead of the 4GB of RAM that it currently has.  Quick answer: It can't.frown  However, in the process, the HP website popped up a warning notice that there is a recall on power cords for laptops from that era.  Suggesting that they could burst into flame! surprise  The warning took me to a page on their site where I could evaluate my cord.  The first test was to verify that the embossed ID on the cord's end plug was "LS-15" it was. (*oops*)  Then that led me to further boxes to be ticked off, such as the cord's part number and manufacture date as well as the laptop serial number.  But in the end, the automated analysis came back with "Your cord is not affected in the recall and you may continue to use your cord."  Yay!  Another win. yes  However, it would have been nice to know of this issue 10 years ago.frown
