RIP: The Segway. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-53160518 Help, it's fallen and can't get up!
Complaint: Arghhhh..., dead disks.
I have a bank of external USB hard drives. They're my various archive drives and redundant backup drives. They're turned off most of the time. I went to use one of the drives last night. I turned it on expecting it to pop up ready to go, but... nothing. Zip, nada, zero.
OK, it's an old drive, death is a fact of life. So I turned to my other redundant drive and guess what..., nothing, zip, nada.
Hmmm..., power OK, cables connected, computer OK, but two dead disks? Perhaps power spike zapped them? Not likely, they're all on a good UPS. So I turn on a third drive and again, nothing, zip, nada. Arghhh. Getting desperate I tried a 4th drive but it worked. Yay! OK, so what was different? The dead drives are all USB2 and connected to the same USB2 hub. The 4th drive is a USB3,and connected directly to the USB3 port on the computer, so perhaps it's the external USB2 hub they're all connected to, or possibly the USB2 connection on the back of the computer. I managed to crawl under the desk and find the correct wires and was able to test one of the drives by rewiring it to a USB2 port on the front of the computer. Works OK. Yay! No data lost.
Tested another harddrive and again, it's OK. Double Yay! So now, it's either the USB2 hub or the computer's USB2 port. Tested the port directly and yay, it works.
So, now it's down to the USB2 hub or the cable connecting it to the computer. But cables don't spontaneously die (well, only in extreme circumstances), and unfortunately, USB hubs aren't cheap anymore.
Well, not for a powered one of good quality anyway. (*sigh*) I've got so many external USB2 devices I actually have two 7 port USB2 hubs fully populated. So, losing one of them hurts. Now, I guess it's off to the Amazon or NewEgg catalog to order a new one. And I thought I was going to make it through this month on budget. Silly boy.
I believe the dead USB2 hub is well over 10 years old so I shouldn't be surprised it gave up the ghost.
Edited to add: OK, I've ordered my replacement 7-port USB hub. It's a USB3 but should work OK for all my old USB2 devices. Catalogs reveal lots of manufacturers but none that I recognize or trust or have any experience with except perhaps Rosewill. I couldn't even find my old favorite brand for hubs, Belkin. Prices for new 7-port hubs ranged from $10 to $144 and even one at $1400
I chickened out and got a Rosewill, at $20. I was tempted by some unknown no-name brand with a form factor that I liked better but it was $50. My budget screamed at me when I put it in the cart so I changed my mind and got the Rosewill. Life's a risk.

The wireless keyboard for my Surface ran out of juice, and working in C4D suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks without a keyboard.
Side-complaint: every single aftermarket keyboard for the Surface is wireless, which I didn’t want, but I ended up buying anyway because they were less than half the price of the official Microsoft keyboards.

Complaint: Updated too soon!
OK, yeah, I shouldn't have, but I was checking on my Win10 update status and saw that the Win10 feature update #2004 was available. Yeah, yeah, I know I'd read that it had some problems but that was some time ago so I figured they'e been addressed by now. I admit I hadn't delved too deeply into what the problems were but a cursory scan of the list of issues had nothing to do with my systems. So, I went ahead and installed it on three of my four Win10 machines (my laptop is apparently too old and they haven't released 2004 for it yet, probably because of old driver issues). Regardless, I was fat dumb and happy because the updates went OK and the systems were working well, except that on my primary machine with oodles and oodles of disk storage, that it would slow down sometimes.
Then today I was browsing YouTube and I was offered this gem of information https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffHIY6pOJUk OMG, this is a Win10 feature update #2004 issue that applies directly to me. Yes, all of my Win10 machines have an SSD installed and after viewing the video I checked the defrag issue and yes, all of them have been defragging my SSD drives every time I turn the computer on, and sometimes a couple times a day just for jollies! And yes, I'm one of those people who turns his computers off almost every night and all back on again the next day. Arghhhh....
Fortunately I have two options:
1) Roll back the update (I'm on day 9 of the 10 day window for rollback) or
2) Completely disable defrag operations on the SSD drives per the instructions given in the video above. Which is what I did. Rolling back has been problematic for me in the past. So, I took the lesser of two evils.
This means that now I need to watch the update notices and wait for an official release of the 2004 feature package and reinstall it.
(*sigh*)
Non-complaint: Wheee..., I put on a pair of pants today that require my belt and I nonchalantly buckled it all the way down to the 4th notch. The FOURTH notch! OMG!
I haven't dipped into the 4th notch in years. I've been hovering at the 2nd or 3rd notch but have to loosen it when I sit down. 4th notch and I'm sitting down comfortably,
I'm practically svelt!
Well, as svelt as a pear can get.

How do you find out if someone is a sir in uk? they sirred paul mcartny
wanna see if bruce dickinson is sirred. and if not start a petition. do i address it to the queen?
Dear Queen
bucking ham Palace ?
is sirred mean like knighted?
https://www.gov.uk/honours/types-of-honours-and-awards
Who is bruce dickinson? and what has he done to be knighted?
He's the lead singer for Iron Maiden so...he has done nothing to be sirred.
That isn't necessarilly an obstacle. Not being a UK national is, though they do do honoraries (Georg Solti had one, for example).
It does tend to be obvious if I, as a Brit, had to ask, why the person named has not been recognised for the higest honour an ordinary person can get. Iron Maiden I have heard off, but the faces changed regularly. The Beatles were always the same
beisdes Iron Maiden he has a ilots license to fly a 747

Bruce Dickinson stopped competing when he was 23 and was ranked 7th in Great Britain at that time. He’s 54 now and still willing to give it a go against an Olympic medalist.
he's also an author, "what does this button do"

thanks!
So does John Travolta. So, not a big deal in the whole scheme of things. And why singing would be worthy of knighthood really befuddles me. What has just singing or acting done to make a better world? Which just goes to show how trite the honors thing can get. If honors are needed, get people from your craft to vote you to the top and have a big party and give you a gaudy gold plated thing to put on your mantlepiece, like the Americans do it.
Leave the government prizes to significant achievements.
i had a hairy dr visit, lied. thought they were gonna figure it out. doh
She did the ekg 3 times, moving the leads around.

That's how I feel about the Academy Awards. I don't watch them anymore. It's just a bunch of people in the business patting each other on the back. The only awards that mean something are the Peoples' Choice awards. Even then, it's no big deal to me.
Dana
They don't request those tests for the hell of it! The results could make a difference in the outcome of the surgery!

Belgian isn't a language right?
cute bruce interview

Belgium has two languages, Flemmish (Dutch) and Walloon (French).
Complaint: Arghhh... more computer problems. Again, my old main computer is acting up. I just ordered a new USB hub for its array of backup & archive drives. Now, today, I was working away and heard an internal fan start to spin at high speed. It NEVER does that. I checked the various temperatures in the system and the motherboard was complaining of 82C whereas everything else was down in the 32C range. The CPU itself was up to 59C. I looked and found that an air intake had been blocked by a Kleenex box so I moved it expecting the temperature to go down. It did, slightly. So, after a couple minutes I turned the system off, waited for a while as I watched TV then came back to the computer, but when I turned it on it halted in the boot phase complaining about a fan not running. So, I power cycled again and got the same result. (*sigh*). I opened the case and looked, and sure enough, the CPU fan wouldn't spin when I turned on the computer.
I poked at it with my finger and it started. Yay! So, now the system is running and I'm using it to tell my tale, but this means that I should immediately order a replacement and in the meantime, not leave my computer on unattended.
I should have expected trouble. For the last several months, I'd hear a vibration in the system but whenever I tried to find it, I invariably ended up moving the computer case and the vibration would stop. I suspect that it was the fan giving me fair warning. I shouldn't be surprised though. This computer is about 10 years old and the only original parts left in it are the motherboard & CPU, the front panel memory slots, and the fans. I suppose I should probably replace the case fan too. I have a brand new custom built system with oodles of DAZ power but it's not set up for all my day-to-day personal stuff. So, I'd like to keep this old system running as long as it's repairable.
And after building that new system, I don't have the spare cash to buy another new computer. Perhaps when the motherboard dies.
thanks
and the waffles are round
IIRC the Beatles received their MBEs for "services to export".
Paul was knighted for "Services to music" This included the fact that he wrote about 1/2 the Beatles songs, and fronted Wings, one of the top bands of the 70’s in addition to a long successful solo music career. He also did a lot of unpaid public appearances and charity work including being a prime mover in the creation of a music school from two schools that were closed that were attended by 3 of the Beatles in their youth.
