I wouldn't bet my last coin on it... They always completely wiped any previous version at every new release.
Make backups, my friend...
From the first post of this thread: "Anyone who has Daz Studio 4 in their account will be able to keep it. You'll be able to continue to download and use it for the foreseeable future."
And the latest version of both DS2 and DS3 are still available in your product library if you got them through the store.
Only the minor revisions, the latest revisions of DS2 and DS3 are still available for those who bought them before the release of the next major update.
I learned that the hard way .... they are downright militant about not giving access to previous versions, although it would be no skin off their backs to tell people, "Here you go, but we don't support that older version any more, so don't ask for tech support." Instead everybody is pulled into the new releases so that we can experience the joys of new bugs and new dependencies (like needing 4.15 for GF/M8.1 to work properly, being able to use the new shaders, etc.). The only way to protect oneself against this is to religiously download every iteration of Studio and store it for safekeeping just in case it is needed later since you are prohibited from taking any steps backwards during the Great Leap forward.
Those are hilariously outdated. It is the newer (but not necessarily newest) version that people might need if they have to take one, two or three steps backwards.
The point is that the latest version of each major version of DS is still available. That's what Daz said they will do with DS4. If you need to use a plugin only available for DS3, you still can.
Minor versions are a totally different thing.
My understanding is that DS5 will install to a different location than DS4, just as the DS4 beta installs to a different location than the DS4 main release.
So, DS4 and DS5 will co-exist on the same PC.
Cheers,
Alex.
Absolutely untrue, I still have downloads for the last versions of DS3 and DS2. People should be making backups anyway, but there don't need to be made-up reasons to do so.
I still have access to Daz Studio 3A in my downloads.
Besides the main file for DS, I believe there are other files that should be saved. Could someone please indicate which files should be stored as backups?
Daz plug-ins, and perhaps thrid-party to be safe but generally those are not recompiled and repackaged for each release
Unfortunately saying no support isn't going to stop people from asking for support, and responding badly when refused.
Doesn't make me feel any better about there being no previous versions available, sorry. Those kinds of emails can just be replied to (if necessary) with a standard, canned r(cut and paste) esponse. There are ways of handling this in order to provide people with previous version IF Daz wanted to do so.
Yea, I don't see the problem either. Many other companies have links to older versions of their products on their sites.
And quite the reverse is true as well. I have numerious apps that have no way to revert back or download older versions unless you saved it so it's not suprising in the least, and I pay for those apps
...I have 1.8 in my installer archive and actually have it installed. Kind of fun going "old school" sometimes, Light Dome Pro still works.
I think this is why people are reluctant to risk the newer versions or keen to have access to previous versions. If DAZ would stop ignoring those bugs I, for one, would be happy to go with the latest version. I'm guessing that a lot of us are hoping that they have been addressed and that Version 5 will be a clean restart.
Just an example of one of my paid-for apps ...
Daz3D wont confirm or deny the render engine I use for everything will still even be available, so I have no faith D|S 5 will even be of any use to me.
Yes, Affinity is very good about that ;)
...so wondering now about the future of Iray and Daz.
I have been on the Nvidia Reddit page and there is mention of a new realtime engine branded as "Optix" that Nvida has rolled out.
There was also a reply to a comment I made regarding Iray that mentioned Nvidia was going to "depreciate" the render engine in favour of the new one. The new OPtix is also said to support only W10 on up The concern is how will this affect GPUs, drivers. and of course Daz. Will they continue run Iray even after it is obsolete as they have been doing with 3DL? Will they drop Iray and move to the new Optix engine (they already have Filament as their "realtime" engine)?. That would pretty much say that Daz will abandon anyone who isn't on W10 or higher (something I believe in the past was said wouldn't happen). Will the old 3DL be the only render engine available if that occurs (in spite of just about every product today being released with only with PBR materials)?
I predict they will take the path of least resistance/maximum profit, whichever that entails.
Not a surprise, IRay was obsolete just after six months its launch. Only DAZ Studio and Iclone are stubborn enough to have kept them until now.
Just hope the new engine is compatible with IRay standards. Or simply jump to 3Delight, you can easily convert any IRay materials to it if you like.
As for me, nothing would change, I'm on 3Delight and I will stay with 3Delight, unless Filament gets fixed and becomes a full render engine.
About Windows, just upgrade your PC! The SSD I have on my pc is with me since Windows 7... I simply updated it to the new releases and versions and everything worked fine. It passed from 7 to 8, then 8.1 and now 10... And when Uncle Bill fixes Windows 11, it will be on my SSD.
Ironic that they chucked 3DL into the forgotten bin to work on something everyone else chucked into the forgotten bin.
Though I really like Iray, I wish Daz had gone with Cycles like Poser did. I find Cycles materials easy to create and change ;) Of course, if you've used other render engines, as I have, like Luxrender, Kerkythea, etc....most PBR rendering engines all have similar shader systems because real world shaders all follow the same principles. The only difference is how the render engine implements them.
@veba79: ...indeed.
Yeah, Daz will need to figure something out that works if Iray goes totally into the dustbin. Not really wild about Filament from what I've seen as it seems more well suited for game development and animation rather than high quality illustration work.
@ Imago: Already have a system upgrade priced out and in the works for W11 with a Ryzen9 5900X, 64 GB of memory (upgradeable to 128), and an RTX 3060 (the latter which I already have) for IRay rendering.
The only mention of Daz3D the article I read was credit for the Albert Mansion that was used in one of the sample images rendered in RedShift. Nothing mentioned about OptiX and any plans for Daz.
I would love for them to find a way to make the dForce kernels be able to be re-ccompiled or fixed if something happens to corrupt them. I've had that happen twice now :( So I'm not able to use dForce untill either I get a new vid card or a new version of the dForce engine is made. It's exctly fun trying to find things for the newer figures that doesn't require dForce lol.
Imago cannot see Daz implementing the new render engine any time soon ?? if you look at the changelog. They will keep banging on with Iray Daz is just moving to QT5 Soo way behind the curve in respect to other 3d software perhaps they want to stay as an entry-level software and be the big fish in the small pond
...interesting as while I was doing a bit of poking around to determine the fate of Iray I discovered that a new updated plugin was released for 3DS Max 2022. Also developers of their Omniverse package are still working with Iray.
OptiX apparently is more of a ray tracing API or module that is run alongsde with other render engines and applications from what I gathered. There also is a render module for Omniverse as well, but couldn't find more detailed information about it. When they mentioned Blender, Cycles was also mentioned as part of the conversation.
There is the free version of Octane Render as well.. Weird thing I sure I remember Optix being in an earlier version of Studio, but seems to not be there now.. Also doing some google searches I can't find any mention of nVidia shelving iRay..
