    Complaint...

So today I went to see some friends that we only have hung out with once since the pandemic... the last time it was at a gathering, today it was just our two families...

We are sitting in the yard just BSing and I guess the whole time I was aware of the sound of what I thought was a large outdoor party going on maybe a few blocks away (it's a subdivision/gated community, so whatever works out as blocks in one of those)...

Suddenly there is the unmistakable sound of a struggling jet engine fighting to not flame out... in fact, it sounded exactly like two engines at full throttle, with one popping and flaming out and trying to restart...

We all rushed to the other side of the deck, me expecting to see an airliner nosing down at full speed into the woods nearby (the house is a stone's throw away from LI's. MacArthur airport)... I yanked my daughter off of the bench she was standing on, expecting a impact related shockwave to come our way...

But the sound went on for way too long... after a good enough period it was clear it wasn't a plane... my friend said he'd never heard that around there before... So after a minute or two a neighbor sees us standing there and informs us it's a truck show going on nearby... I'm guessing it was a Drag Truck with jet engines similar to Shockwave (a three engine jet drag truck)...

How the effing hell are you are running a friggin' jet drag truck at a pretty obscure and not to well advertised truck show in a mostly residential area THE DAY AFTER 9/11?!!?

I texted a friend who owns a Freightliner dealership and is very up to date on these things and he didn't even know about it.

My friggin adrenaline got so ramped up (apparently so did one of my daughter's who is a lot like me), I was running through every scenario about what to do should it land in the area, am I going to have to drag people out of burning houses, how will I get through the woods to find survivors if there are any... it's gonna suck to see carnage like that again.... ughrrr!... it's three hours later and I'm still wired...

    F**k.

I know it's stupid, but you really should have heard it and since I've heard damaged aircraft struggling to stay aloft before it was really disturbing.

Worse yet, there are people who live in that neighborhood who were at ground zero on 9/11... I can only imagine how traumatic that could be if they didn't know about that truck show.

I probably should have a drink or six, but afterwards we were discussing pandemic related nonsense (my friends are both doctors, so they are going nuts with this stuff) we were all kinda fired up about that too, so I'm not sure if having a drink would calm me down.

    Ugh...

    Bad timing, but still...

    ...extremely worthy rant.

Non-complaint: Is Bullwarg a frog or a toad?

Toads are frogs; there is no taxonomic distinction between the two.

Maybe not but toads live most of their adult lives on land ,have dry rough bumpy skin and exude a toxin when attacked which will either kill the dog or cat that ingests it or make them high as $heet !! Frogs on the other hand spead most of their adult life in or around water ,damp , moist places, they have sleak smooth skin and their legs taste like chicken , then there are tree frogs who dispite being called tree frogs will invaribly land on the person who is most afraid of them ........ once had carpet frogs when I lived in Florida , little tiny frogs that would get in the house in to the carpet end up covered in dog hair and mummified ,unless you caught them and put them out

    @Gordig : I didn't know that.

@carrie58 : Going by your description, Bullwarg sounds like a toad...?

I wonder, if frogs legs taste like chicken, would they give me indigestion like chicken does...

I think I might lick a toad. That way I'll be too high to notice the bs going on around me.

Yea I think Bullwarg is more toadish , but the Frogol add on for him would give you a "froggy" version .......

I personally wouldn't recommend licking a toad ,and truthfully getting high or drunk to avoid something isn't really a great plan ,cause the issue will still be there later ......and you have to deal with it with a headache ......scream therapy is good though , go out in the backyard and scream releives alot of stress ,and shocks people  itnto leaving you alone .......or commiting you either way it can be a plus .Ripping weeds out of the ground works too , you envision them as whoever is bugging you and just rip them out ,the plus is "others" think you are working and leave you alone and you get to relive aggression .....

  • Well, it's looking like TS Nicholas is going to just barely miss or run right over my city.  It'll hopefully stay a Tropical Storm.  As a City Employee, I'm an essential personal, though my main job normally deals with computers.  It's currently sounding like it'll be heavy rain and tropical style winds, not a hurricane force.  Hopefully my little car can navigate to work and back.  Most of my path is new construction/new drainage but I have to go under some kind of underpass to reach work.  /crosses fingers for safe trip.

Ever since I posted a poll as to whether I should released my personal renders as a subscription gallery or a premium gallery, I've had no new watchers. How can you make money out of something, when none of your own supporters will support you... My Mum says that she's gets frustrated when I bad mouth myself/my work (low self confidence), but it's so hard not to, especially when stuff like that happens.

    I wanted to open a Kofi account. I don't think I'll bother.

From my experience (Personal and from what I've seen from friends and their experiences), a lot of people prefer free-to-view galleries unless the content is REALLY something they want to see, and even then the idea of "paywalls" is almost guaranteed to put people off, when an entire gallery gets stuck behind it.  With that said though, I figure what you experienced there was just a coincidence - watches come and go and its such a fluctuating thing. Now if you lost a number of followers right as you posted that, then that'd be another matter xD

I can't speak much for Ko-Fi since I've barely used it, but an idea for DA's premium galleries - or a Patreon should you go that route - would to be to have bonus stuff put there instead of fully exclusive things.  With mine, that means larger resolution images or 'alternate versions'  (different angles, lighting, etc)  to a publically available image.

(^^' Hehe - I've got OCD, so coincidences are tough to deal with ^^' )

I know a few artists who have done well (mainly on Patreon). Two of them release Daz characters, and the other one releases nude elf pictures in Full HD. I can do the latter (not necessarily with elves), but I would only be able to provide (at least), one Full HD render a month. But I doubt it'd be enough for people to want to subscribe. If I had a real machine of a computer (instead of one that's "slightly dodgy"), I'd be able to up my game and release more high quality renders (and maybe a comic or two).

I was thinking of using Kofi as a "tip jar" sort of thing. But there are artists out there who release high quality freebies, who don't anything in return. Regardless of the donation method that they use (I hope that makes sense).

Sadly, I think a lot of followers just like things for free.  Everybody thinks that everything on the Internet should be free.  They think they deserve it.

    Dana

That's what an artist said to me, when I discovered that their art was being sold on a certain auction site. So I've been saying that to owners of Facebook pages who post photos, only to have them stolen and used/sold elsewhere. Some of them get quite shocked. Others are not so surprised.

Thank you for your replies. You've certainly given me something to think about. smiley

I think my laptop is starting to slow down (or breakdown). It's eight years old.

Without it, I can't convert or create stuff (due to useless eyesight in one eye). Although I have cleared 4GB from the HDD. It hasn't made the machine any faster, though sad

"Let's drill a few of them and see if there are any cavities below the surface!" laugh (But seriously, there used to be a dentist in my hometown who put "preventative fillings" in all her patients' teeth. She completely hollowed out the entire tooth and filled it with mercury alloy.)

My Daz Studio folder contains nearly a million files, and I'm crying while backing them up!

Even that was better than what they did back in the 50's here, they removed all the teeth with holes in them from School Children... As a result, there were a lot of 15-20 year olds with dentures...

Non-Complaint no1 - My trusty 16 year old Opel passed the yearly inspection today cheeky

Non-Complaint no2 - Ordered i9-9940X for my new rig on Friday, it cost 670 eur (VAT 24% included) and got an order confirmation for it the same day with that price. Today the same processor was priced at 180 eur higher, just a modest 27% increase over the weekend... Someone is very happy smiley

This was in the 1960s and 70s, I think. She lost her license, eventually. The premises that used to be her office were a pet shop as far back as I can remember. My older relatives would tell stories about teens getting dentures for their Confirmation present. frown That was a couple of decades before the 50s, but having no teeth was often the norm.

For those wondering, Confirmation is a Lutheran sacrament where you confirm your Christian faith, at around the age of 15. This is voluntary, but most teenagers choose to go through with it, because there's a party and presents at the end. It's a little like First Communion, just not really at all. Back in the day it was a huge deal. You had to pass an exam, basically, of Bible knowledge. If you passed, congratulations! You were now an adult. If you failed? Then you had to repeat it the next year, and would not be allowed to wear long trousers, as those were reserved for adults! (Kids just wore shorts with stockings all winter.) It was a huge shame on the family, and boys it happened to often "ran off to America."  crying

Before you criticise anyone, walk a mile in their shoes. Then when they get offended, you're a mile away and they have no shoes on.

What if their shoe size isn't the same as yours?  If it is way too big?  Or way too small?

One of the things I thank my mother for frequently is her insistence on regular dental visits.  I grew up through the '50s and '60s visiting dentists and having teeth filled. (Too much easily available sweets and soda drinks).frown

But as an adult having learned better dental care and after having all my wisdom teeth pulled, I still have all my other teeth and find that fillings are rare and usually involve replacing 50 or even 60 year old filling.  I did have one tooth shatter (too week, too many fillings) and had to have a crown made.  It was a good thing I won $800 in the NY State Lotto lottery right about that time.  It paid for my tooth crown and a new fancy printer.yes  I'm expecting to still have all my teeth when I no longer need them.

I'm not sure when I'll be moving,

  • Nicholas has crawled passed us, other than some hard rain bands and heavy gusts of wind.  There's still storm surge in the bay but most of the tropical stuff is gone beyond the wind. 2+ inches of rain in less than 24 hours.  It's been pretty dry this month, so we could use the rain.

23 hours and counting,  I thiiink it's about halfway down?  Once this is over and I'm sure it's saved properly, I'm going to investigate exactly what went wrong that made the rendertime jump so high.  I know I moved the lights around a smidge, reduced the strength on the fog, and added some ferns but....  Oh.  Ohhhhh.  The fog. I just realized, as I was typing that line.  Yes, I did reduce the strength of the fog but I also added emission to it during that scene update.  I'm... Not sure I even really see much of a difference in the scene either, but I'll give it a test render (that I don't intend to actually finish ofc)  with it disabled to see if it does crawl along or not.

It's definitely not the ferns by the way, since it's universally slower rendering and not just in the ground, so it's probably that Fog Emission  :O   Good thing I didn't switch on "Contribute to GI"  too I guess haha

    That's good to hear!

...speaking of water from the sky, after 3 months and 5 days of extreme, unusually bone dry and very warm to blistering hot conditions here, we are looking at our first really serious amount of rain this coming weekend starting with over 1" on Friday before tapering off to light showers by Sunday  The last time we had any "significant" amount of rain was way back at the beginning of the third week of June when we received just over 0.5".  Actually going to have to go to the back of the closet and break out long sleeve shirts and possibly a sweatshirt or jacket as highs will struggle to reach the mid 60s (which usually have been the low temps for most of the summer).

After all these dry months, that rain is going to mix with all the oil on the streets making for some very slick conditions so expecting to hear a lot of "fender bender" reports. Good day to just stay in and do some Dazzing..

Complaint: What hell did they do to the GUI in DS 4.15?

I've been using older versions of DS 4 (after iRay) and a week or so ago decided to put 4.15 on my old MacBook... So is it just a Mac thing or did they rejigger the whole interface weirdly... or have I gotten so used to the way I've had it set up on other computers for so long that I've forgotten what it looks like when you first install it?

But there is stuff that I'm sure isn't/wasn't like that in other versions... like what the hell is going on with the environment dome being hidden until you apparently accidentally click on something in Draw Settings to make the Environment bar appear in the Render Settings... WTF?
I'm like 1000% sure that's not how it was before...

I haven't really used 4.15 yet and can only imagine what else has been reshuffled to make doing simple stuff more confusing.

On a separate complaint note... is DAZ trying to ignore/erase their past?... I went to Wikipedia to look up their version history and it's all gone... the whole DAZ Studio page is almost like a store page now with some basic blurbs about the origins and more about Genesis... the page earned itself a "This article's tone or style may not reflect the encyclopedic tone used on Wikipedia". notation... in fact all the other DAZ related Wikipedia articles have been pruned down for some reason.

    Why?

This company does really weird stuff, but there was absolutely nothing they needed to remove from there... I'm guessing someone thought it was a good idea to make it look more like an ad than an encyclopedia page, but that's kinda the point of the "pedia" part of "Wikipedia"... no?

    Ugh.
