....unfortunately there are many of us who cannot afford to do so. On what I was making at my previous job, I had to choose between the company health plan and a monthly pass to get to work.

The driver insurance alone would have sunk me as it lapsed for over 30 years so in the insurance industry's eyes I was basically looked at as teenager again....

    ....at 60 years old.

The only bitch I had about the Metro was parking at the out-lying stations when you wanted to go into the city. Giant game of musical chairs.

The new streetcar in Washington, D.C. was supposed to open last year, but it has not opened yet. The current mayor is hoping it will open this year. A street car project in Arlington was scrapped after years of study. Officials never did give a good reason (or at least a regular civilian like me would understand). At least the buses and subway trains are still running.

When I was there back in the 80s the rumor was that the Metro didn't put a stop in the Georgetown area because the powerful residents feared the constant underground vibrations would damage the old buildings and bring too many riff-raff into the area. Georgetown is full of mansions and tiny brick homes and has lots of upper class stores but you either have to walk in (over a mile) from the Foggy-Bottom Metro station or across the river (about 1.2 miles) from the Rosslyn station. Or obviously drive and park in the always full street spaces, or park at the exorbitantly priced shopping mall garage or about a mile out of the area, in which case you might as well have taken the Metro. Or you could take the bus and waste an hour or two waiting and riding, or you could take a taxi, which was sometimes the better choice at non-rush hour times. However, The Georgetown area only has one major thoroughfare (M Street) and it's packed with traffic entering and leaving the city all day long. All the rest of the streets are narrow 200 year old streets lined with parked cars.

The mansions had to have servants and they lived in the tiny little brick row houses. Which are now homes to high earning yuppies who put up with living in ancient cracker-boxes for very exorbitant prices.

I had a consulting contract at Georgetown University for a few weeks and it was a nightmare getting in, getting parked, and I still had long distances to walk on campus. The University is marvelous but the whole Georgetown area is beautiful too, with lots of huge trees and fancy architecture. I can't fault it for that. Just very inconvenient.

There used to be a lot of trolleys in the US. Even here out in the wilds of western NY State the little city of Jamestown used to have a trolley system that went from Jamestown at the southern end of Lake Chautauqua, along the eastern edge of the lake for 11 miles up to an amusement park. My grandparents and even my stepmother remembered it but it was long gone by time I came around.

Here's a link to information about the original system. Apparently it went all the way from Warren, PA to Midway Amusement park, about 40 miles.

There is still some interest in it.

Ah hah! You have explained something for me!

I'm one of those many people who has been grumbling for years about having to change the clocks twice a year. Like a number of other states New Mexico has listened to it's citizens and a proposal doing away with the time changes has passed the NM State Senate.
My question to Santa Fe is why the blankety-blank would I want to be on Daylight time in the winter?
