  • There are a couple of freebie cars, admittedly higher end, at Rendo by R Publishing - 2008 Audi A4, 2009 Honda CR-V, 2007 Merc G class, 2009 VW Sirocco & 2008 BMW M3. They're in 3ds format, but I managed to get the Audi into DS - scale is not easy.

There's a freebie Fiat 126 there from Dry Jack.

Lucian Lilippe did an obj bumblebee 2CV6 over at Rendo too. SmidA did a Statler 1.2 in May 2021.

    All moderately normal cars.

    Regards,

    Richard

  • OK, look, I know that Doc Hudson is a Hudson Hornet and not a Mercury, but looking at the Mercury Coupe on its store page, Doc Hudson is all I can see. I urgently need someone to surface a pair of giant eyes onto the windshield (and thus perhaps go for the DOUBLE editorial license).

yeah, it would be nice to have real affordable cars models ... like your normal, ford, chevy, dodge, etc etc.  Most are the rich man's cars, fancy sport cars, etc. Also regular delivery trucks, vans, etc. maybe aged from the early 2000s and up.

  • There is a Merc Sprinter at Rendo in two roof heights, two lengths and with/without windows - TruForm's Multi Purpose Van. Regards, Richard.

    There's this;

Renderosity has some and there's a creator at Renderhub that does really good ones.

Yeah, I'm not sure who covers that territory other than Predatron. I'm still getting all my mileage there from two kits of his, one of which is a bona fide antique--his Step Van. I also use his Light Truck which is somewhat more recent. I haven't found anything else that really does what those two kits do. On the other hand, they still do the job well, and after all, there aren't all that many shapes of light truck/van around.

Since I filled my wishlist up with DO items... the last 2 days I've gotten choices from my list.  All 4 items are/were on my list... now just need to pick... FREEBIE or 2.99???  lol

Funny, usually, the $2.99 is the one with the higher base price from what I remember.

I am just happy I get to choose from items I really want!  lol  Just wish I had asked sooner.  The first 5 days were a waste for me :(  Not sure when this all ends... I'm hoping the 25th so I still have some time left to get some great items :)

btw... I picked the shader... can't go wrong with shaders. ;)

Well.. that didn't last long... The freebie item I was offered today is not showing up as free in my cart :(  ... I guess I'll have to grab the 2.99 item before I loose it too (sighs)

Sometimes there's some discombobulation right at Daz-midnight. My freebie initially showed as not-free but is now when I view the cart.

I thought the same thing... but I waited all day and it never went to 0 in my cart... even after refreshing the page... etc... Nada... so I got the shaders instead so I didn't loose out.  Today I got shaders as a free item... but opted to buy Flavia for 2.99 instead :)  She's so pretty.

The XI Post Apocalyptic Camper Van is a hoot. Not only do they have working satellites, but they have easy enough access to ammunition to be able to feed several gattling guns. After a collapse of civilisation I'd expect satellites to be the first things to give up through lack of ground station staff and orbit maintenance, and ammunition would be very precious as there are a lot of industrial processes needed to make it, any scarcity in any process & the supply stops.

Does any one here know how to make cordite? Or the nitric and sulphuric acids needed for cordite? Or how to mine copper & zinc to make brass? Or turn the cartridge cases? Or mine lead (though alternative supplies may be available)? Have to confess I feel engineers should, otherwise I'm not sure too many people do. Which is why the camper seems so unlikely and so much ridiculous fun.

Hubby used to make his own bullets... He got lead from fishing lures FREE in Lake Erie when he went fishing... or just beach combing... But I must admit he had to purchase shells and gunpowder... so you are right... Probably not feasable in an apocolyps situation.

Thanks for the tip, Leana! It doesn't affect me as a pure hobbyist, and I wouldn't have bought the model anyway. I don't need another 1930s/1940s car...

When will we see actual, 'normal' cars, for contemporary street scenes? But they would probably be 'Cybertrucks' or something...

+1... could use "normal" cars in my runtime.

@richardandtracy: The whole 'post apocalyptic' genre is a bit ridiculous or naive in a macabre way. After an apocalypse worthy of the name, there shouldn't be any picturesque dirty vehicles or sexy grunge outfits left for attractive protagonists to use for their little adventures. Even the attractive protagonists should no longer be there - or they should look anything but attractive. But once again, I'm too obsessed with reality and too pessimistic... frown

I'm with you... wouldn't be caught dead in a sexy outfit... I'd be too worried about keeping warm in Ohio... burrrrrrrrrr... Winter is almost here and I'm freezing already!  lol

There are quite a lot of free cars out there, for example google for a site called dmi car 3d.

However they are not going to be in poser or DS format, more likely 3ds, obj or others. The other problems is most are based on real car models, so will likely suffer from similar usage restrictions as the EL here. The good news is that many of them are "normal" cars, not just sports cars or scifi cars which are most of what is available here.

Definitely easy enough to cast your own bullets with scrap lead. Just add some sort of catchment device and the shells/casings could be reused, and it's actually quite easy to make your own black powder (yes, not ideal for power or in a machine gun, but hey, it's post apocalypse, so you have to make due)

To be fair to the PA, the satellite dish obviously isn't being used as a satellite dish since it has a harpoon like device coming out of it. The gun is actually a machine gun and not a Gatlin gun, though a Gatlin gun would make more sense with black powder. A machine gun would foul pretty quickly, but the brass (shells) are really tarnished like it had been used with black powder, and the condition of the gun makes the probability of it firing reliably in full auto pretty doubtful,  but again is post apocalypse,  so you use what it available. surprise

I actually kinda like it.  Would definitely grab it if I did post apocalyptic type renders. Hmmmm, now to think about how I could use it. Off to check the library for possible environment and clothes.

improvised weapons are probably more realistic, when I was a teen a neighbour made a rocket launcher with a PVC pipe, fertilizer and diesel

the good old days before terrorism when such things were just considered a bit dangerous for possibly hurting yourself not something that would get you arrested surprise

Thank you all for the good advice! I'm going to search more intensively for good contemporary car models. I might get gcjellyfish's family car today; it's on the sale list and looks very good.

It looks ok but not amazing without the headband (by setting opacity of headband surface, there's no parameter/material setting) - can probably improve the hairline with some tweaking of the adjustments, but it's another hair with no morphs. Will see how it goes manually applying dforce, but otherwise might end up returning it. I do like it with the headband though.

They're around, they're just a bit tricky to find. Everyone wants to do hot rods, vintage, or quasi-futuristic stuff. I guess straight contemporary sedans aren't sexy enough.

I can speak to this because I just a week or two ago had to do a scene where I needed to fill a parking lot with cars that wouldn't look out of place in the present day, and even though I planned to use a lot of instancing, I still wanted at least four or five distinct models for variation. I already owned Petipet's Ranger and Xivon's Modern SUV, both of which are recommended but both are Land Rover-ish so if you want a coupe or sedan these aren't it. I bought Polish's Upper Class Car because it was on sale (and did not buy his other two Upper Class vehicles because they weren't); the Upper Class Car is basically a BMW. And then I filled out with two very generic, fairly low-res sedans that come as props with Bituka's gas station set.

I believe Stonemason's Urban Sprawl 3 has a couple of low res vehicles. They are not available as props but if you load the scene you can find and separate them. It's a great product, well worth picking up, especially on sale.

Edit: I just looked, and the vehicles are available as props. Two buses, a delivery truck and a police car. The last one could be re-shaded for a coupe.

Urban Sprawl 2 have a couple too, but I don't have that one.

  • there is no shortage of third party cars around both paid and free

some are obj or need to be exported from something like Unreal Engine

(I have enough from there picked up in sales or free for the month alone to populate every street and they are licensed as 3D game assets too!)

if DAZ are uninterested in marketing cars for use in renders plenty of other places step up

not gonna lie, ones rigged for use in DAZ studio are preferable and I would buy them over a fleet of Unreal assets but if I cannot use them, well ...

So sorry, I completely missed it!! That's what I get for looking at it on a tablet.

It's definitely not a great location for a Gatlin gun (could be a mini gun, but that would definitely eat up a lot of ammunition really quickly, and would not work well, if at all, with black powder). But on the plus side the shells would be contained in the vehicle so that would be a plus for possible reloading. Since the first Gatlin guns made were for black powder, it's resonable to think this one could be operated with "home made" black powder.

The biggest downside to the black powder theory would be the production of primers. I'm not really sure how that could be done (but I'm sure someone more ingenious than I am could figure out something). Maybe they took over a primer warehouse os no primer production is needed. Maybe they took over a storage facility with thousands of rounds for both guns? Regardless, it's definitely no worse than any of the transgressions on reality that Hollywood makes almost daily wink

There were already percussion caps at the time the fully functioning Gatling gun came out at the beginning of the 1860s. At that time they were filled with black-powered paper cartridges and primed with a percussion cap because brass casings were not fully available yet. It was only a short period before they became available in mass production and then implemented into the daily use of it
