Yeah eggs are $7.99 / dozen here where I live. Thats for medium eggs.
I cant even order them from the distributer for my business. They just dont have anything in stock.
I've heard about the egg prices in the US, but here in the Northeast, they haven't really changed all that much. For years I've been paying ~$5-$6/dozen for certified pasture-raised eggs at the grocery store (large size)...and that's what they still are. Just bought eggs (Pete & Gerry's) this past Friday and that's what I paid. It's expensive, but they've always been expensive. Eggs are one of the few things I don't cheap out on when it comes to groceries. Once in a while we're lucky enough that someone with chickens gives us a bunch of eggs, but that's infrequent, so we rely on grocery eggs.
How did the discussion shift from Game of Thrones to ... eggs ;p?
Because easter eggs are a staple of gaming culture.
We went from NFTs to Eggs and possibly potatoes because they are actually related in a round about way...
Things that seem bad, aren't always bad... like price increases and tokens for weirdly deformed renders of overpriced licensed characters.
You have to look at it this way...
The encouraging thing to keep in mind is that while there may be temporary egg or potato shortages at the moment which will have driven up the cost for a carton of eggs or a sack of potatoes, those shortages won't last forever and before we know it eggs and potatoes will remain expensive well after the shortages are over.
Wait...that's not actually encouraging... what was the word I was thinking of?… depressing... annoying… aggravating…?
Remember when there was that big hurricane that wrecked all the oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and some refineries on land and the cost of fuel shot up, so everyone had to start charging more for shipping and heavier stuff like liquids went up in price dramatically…
Then the price of gas went down after a while, but everyone was like “well, you were okay with giving us more money back then and now we are used to it, so you know what… maybe give us a little more because now the housing bubble burst and the economy is bad, and it’s bad luck not to charge more if there’s a crisis”…
So... On the bright side, the high prices won’t last for ever.
They’ll get way, way higher… but don’t worry, you’ll be making the same amount of money… which technically means that if prices continue to go up and the cost of living increases, you are actually making less money.
But that’s only technically.
From a reality standpoint.
From a magical thinking perspective, inflation has stabilized and prices have really only gone up 7% or 13% or some silly small percentage (like 50%, 60% or 150%) and there are more jobs available (now that everyone needs five jobs to buy a carton of eggs) and consumer confidence has not been significantly affected by the supply chain issues which are pretty much over (even though that’s the current explanation for everything) and Santa Claus’ year end naughty list report is boosting Wall Street expectations for an uptrend in crypto trading using AI influence bots which should solve everyone’s problems within the next three months… according to the aggregate information sifted down from the bulk of financial reporting, which itself may or may not have been written by AI finance chatbots dressed as reporters, or possibly that proverbial 1000 chimpanzees typing away until they randomly produce an article… honestly it’s hard to tell anymore, once the chimpanzees started getting degrees in finance and becoming venture capitalists and activist investors it was a real game changer for simian financial journalism… in fact were it not for the telltale mention of poop throwing and bananas in every article you’d barely be able to tell the difference between them and the average human written Yahoo News article.
But don’t let any of this get you down… as long as you are a billionaire you have nothing to worry about… and if you aren’t a billionaire, just read more articles on how it’s not so bad and you should keep spending more money and be happy paying more and truly believe that less for more actually works out as more for less in the end, which will presumably be shortly after you’ve eaten your pets because the grocery store is changing $400 for can of beans.
I know on the face of it that all sounds rather gloomy, but it’s not… pets can be tasty, plus history shows these kinda things happened before and it worked out…
440 million years ago, there was the Ordovician-Silurian event and everything turned out fine… so what if we lost trilobites, would you rather have a shrimp cocktail or a trilobite cocktail?…
365 million years ago during the Devonian period we had a little hiccup, but big deal... who needs armored fish with massive sharp boned jaws anyway… like literally everything was a giant super-piranha back then…
Now we have tasty salmon fillets and cute goldfish, so tell me that didn’t work out…
And yeah, a mere 112 million years later (a millisecond on the cosmic scale) during the Permian-Triassic event, 95% of the weird creatures living on the planet sodded off... but would you really want 9 foot long millipedes, dragonflies big enough to eat a chihuahua, 16 inch long carnivorous crickets, flesh eating roaches or pony sized salamanders you could ride?
Okay, that does sound kinda cool… not the terror roaches and killer crickets though.
That event gave us smaller more convenient roaches and we got more continents outta that… how do you think it would have turned out if we all lived on a single big continent call Panerabread?
Then practically the next day, fifty two million years later, volcanoes decided they’d had enough of all these giant crocodiles, giant carnivorous amphibians and flying reptiles and got rid of them…
And then shortly after that you had the whole Jurassic park meteor/asteroid/comet/dinosaur space station thing which sent the dinosaurs packing to the hereafter, and everything still turned out just fine… and if you were a cockroach, a shark or horseshoe crab, it was even better!
All that goes to show you that even back when the trilobite reporters were towing the line for the prehistoric air conditioner industry and saying that massive global glaciation wasn’t a problem and everyone should keep their A/Cs cranked up as high as possible, even if they were wrong or shortsighted (a huge problem with compound eyes), they were right to an extent because when everyone left their ACs running all the time, the oceans froze at the poles and sea levels dropped and now we have Netflix and spray cheese.
See… nothing to worry about.
Once we all turn to cannibalism and eat each other and the robot servants of the bazillionaires turn on them and eventually on each other because nobody thought to include any laws of robotics into their programming, let alone a fourth one about “after having killed off the humans, don’t kill off each other”, the super intelligent rats who evolved from the study at Stamford university where they grew human brain cells in ordinary laboratory rats and who eventually learned how to train chimpanzees to write articles telling everyone there was no recession or inflation and cryptocurrency was super-rad man, and everyone should ignore the idea that magical thinking and eternal increase in profits is unsustainable and kinda dumb, then those rats will have the entire world to themselves and it’ll be just fine for a couple million more years until they get lazy and something stupid happens and we start all over again.
Ultimately there will be nothing to worry about because it won’t be your problem because your neighbors or family will have eaten you long before that ever occurs.
See… not so bad, is it?
And that's the point...
I think.
Just don't ask questions, pay whatever amount is being asked for anything because perceived value and artificial scarcity outweighs (yeesh, I almost used the "t" word, yuck) demanding value and consumer rights.
If we don't move on and follow the aforementioned path, the super intelligent rats will have to overthrow us and then we'll get into a whole messy Planet of the Rats scenario and who wants that?
I hope this explanation helped.
Because that seems more relevant to the salad-fingered images posted earlier?
Now for something cheerful. . .
cool made me use the VPN Opera comes with for the first time
No, because I - and all my countrypersons - are already frozen stiff and dead due to the lack of russian gas.
Or aren't we?
Ooooh... look... snowdrops and crocuses in the garden already...
Edit: and this was GoT related, as it seems Winter Wasn't Coming this year
Sorry about the egg comment derailing the thread.
I was trying to point out that there are real world problems and coming in the future. Disposable income isn't disposable any longer and reassessment of priorities for me takes precedence over a NFT crypto thing that doesn't even relate to Daz studio, etc.
again sorry.
we all helped push that train off the tracks
No, but it was very entertaining. Thanks for that, McGyver
No reason to be sorry. You're right about it! I was confirming your rightness.
Now that you mention it...trillobite cocktail sounds like it would have been delicious.
I suspect it would taste similar to horseshoe crab cocktail. As for Easter eggs, I suppose we could print out some of the GoT NFTs onto thin paper and decoupage them onto the eggs.
Yeah, but with horseshoe crabs you can't fit as many into the cocktail glass...
But one is probably enough.
