Red Dead Redemption was a great open world. I wish Witcher 3 were more like RDR. John Marston didn't need to level up to have a long road through the game. I thought the RPG elements just bogged down the fun of Witcher 3... it's why the Ciri parts went by so easily. The experience was tighter, more focused than Geralt's mushy RPG-ness. If you could participate in the world of the Witcher like you could in RDR? It would 've been even better.
Still working on my Triss, trying to get her closer to how I saw her in the game. The face needs to be harder, more angular, I think. I also lightened the skin.

Are there by chance any hardcore BOOK!Witcher fans here in this thread? I enjoy the games, but I'm Russian and over 30, so the books have been an integral part of my life since junior high. So obviously I have my own headcanon that doesn't look much like CDPR's vision (which is awesome, just different).
Not even sure if there are Dutch versions of the books/novels (and I'm afraid that any translation from the original will loose some of the finer nuances), so in my case, no not a book reader.
In a way it might have been a pre when playing the games; not 'hindered' by 'facts' it may have helped me immerse more in the game.
But still, there is this certain longing to read the books now......
I think it is more important to get the characters to look like 'you' envision them (which in my case is certainly influenced by the games). The game characters are by definition lower resolution models, so more difficult to compare to...
(On a side note, I did use that outfit on one of my 1st renders with 'Ciri' not at all like in the game, but good enough for me....)
I am a fan of the books. Being American (and one who likes Russia, which seems to be less popular here, sadly), my experience is through the video games first.
I know Triss is different in the books. Chestnut hair, burns/battle scars on her chest. Cirilla is also an odd duck since she is much younger in the books, unlike the ageless Yennefer of Vengerberg. It's hard to imagine Geralt otherwise, or even Yennefer. The game's influence on how I look at Geralt is too strong.
The video game covers for the books in English... these do not help at all.
I'm just glad for Witcher 3 because I'm still not a big fan of how the novels ended. Witcher 3 may be "fan fiction", but I still feel as if it's a valudable extension to the universe since the last novel rather sidesteps questions about Ciri and destiny, I think.
And, truly, Witcher 3 is better if you know the books moreso than the other games. There's just so much to Yennefer, Ciri, the Emperor, and so many others that you don't necessarily appreciate without the books.
(I have read that there are Dutch translations, but since I don't know Dutch (only know some Dutchmen), I cannot say.)
There are Finnish and Hungarian translations, so why not Dutch =) There are German translations too - I think these are some of the oldest along with the Russian ones.
No translation is certainly perfect (one of pan Sapkowski's favourite sayings is "Traduttore, traditore" - "translator = traitor", in Italian). The English translations are quite "meh" IMO (they throw pan Sapek's prose style out of the window completely, if anything), but I somehow suspect that "smaller" European languages have more enthusiastic translators who are capable of delivering a quality result.
I actually liked it that Ciri managed to escape the whole burden of that //insert major swearing// "destiny" in Lady of the Lake. Of course the ending was purposefully an open one - CDPR would have hardly been able to expand on the story otherwise - so even in pan's original vision she may well have to do something one day (and, since Nimue's time was not an ice age, maybe she did do something, just kinda "quietly").
Are you ever getting Sezon Burz ("Season of Storms", 2013) in English? It's a prequel/"side"-quel of sorts, but it still can be interpreted as "validating" CDPR's story - and other post-Lady of the Lake fanfiction where Geralt returns.
I still wonder if Nimue and the Fisher King are Yennefer and Geralt, but lost/not fully themselves... and their unraveling of Ciri's story is their gravitation towards her, their destinies all wound together. If they find Ciri's thread again, maybe Nimue and the FIsher King can fully realize themselves & get out of Avalon.
Those two characters can't be Nimue and the Fisher King of Camelot any more than Ciri is the Lady of the Lake, in my opinion. I don't accept that Nimue = Nimue, with no other explanation.
(I haven't played all the CDPR games, but I understand Geralt meets the Fisher King and can "rub anatomical elements" with Nimue...)
I was also annoyed at all the "destiny" for Ciri through all the books, to the point where I wasn't sure if her relationship with Mistle was just a literary trick to escape desitny rather than trigger the Elder Blood issue. And then, after being bludgeoned by the destiny story, it was just odd for it to fizzle out like that at the end. It didn't resolve my annoyance at the earlier destiny issues.
Still, a great series of stories. Ciri is not just an annoying child of destiny... there's substance to her, which doesn't always happen when you have the kind of character that can end the world.
I have "Season of Storms", but I was feeling like, "Get on with it, I want to read the novels"... so I can't say that I read those stories with any depth. I was most interested in getting into "Blood of Elves", and into the original stories.
Are we talking about the same Sezon Burz? Season of Storms is a novel, set after Geralt's first breakup with Yen - it describes his time with Lytta Neyd (and some crazy adventures and immensely colourful characters); it also features a sort of flashforward interludes (dealing with young Nimue travelling to the school of magic) but it's not a short story collection. It was written last, in 2010s. The two short story volumes were written first - in the 1980s.
Your interpretation is beautiful and poetic, but unfortunately it's not a workable one in the book!canon.
BTW, the book!canon and the game!canon do diverge at a number of very important points. So they aren't exactly mergeable. CDPR took quite a few "liberties" with secondary characters, for instance, and so trying to figure out additional stuff about book characters by using the game!canon isn't really feasible.
So anyway. Nimue cannot be Yen. Neither is she "the" Nimue from our Arthuriana. The name and her Fisher King dude are just examples of those postmodernist references pan Sapek is so fond of. She lives over a hundred years later, in Geralt's world. She a sorceress who is a huge fan of everything related to witchers, especially the most famous one.
Same as Ciri isn't literally the Lady of the Lake, but she sort of "replays" the situation with the sword-out-of-the-water, although it's being deconstructed in a postmodernist way - same as faery tales were in the original short stories. Like Renfri, some Snow-white indeed.
Now, we have it on good authority (word of god) that Geralt and Yen are not dead. Sorry I'm not able to find the interview ATM, so you will have to trust me. =) And in the Nimue storyline, Season of Storm hints that Geralt may well return to his homeworld, if anonymously, although some readers maintain it was just Nimue's hallucination because she's a fangirl. Enough spoilers, I think LOL
Sezon Burz is probably my favourite novel out of them all.
Oh BTW, I saw you mention in the other thread something about Yen not being a hunchback being "fake" - is it what the English translation of The Last Wish leads you to believe? Because Yen's back was fixed in a very actual way, not just as an illusion (along with the tendons in her forearms she slashed in a suicide attempt shortly after entering the school or magic). Remember, magic is science in Geralt's world, it can do amazing surgery, it can create potent medicine, and things that are technically machines (like the birds Yen makes). The only "real" illusion in the books was the one Lydia (Vilgefortz's assistant) was wearing on her disfigured face and throat, which were specifically described as having been exposed to a curse that powerful so as to resist magical healing.
What pan Sapek was trying to get across was that even though you fix something external that makes you unhappy, it won't necessarily heal your soul.

As for Yen's non-hunchback being fake... how real is a person with surgical augmentation of their appearance in this world? Botox, nasal reconstruction, boob enhancement with silicone. While some of that is done for people with critical injuries or disease, a lot is done for vanity. To create an outward appearance.
In the case of the Sorceresses, they've got a lot of personal issues
(The same can be said about Sorcerers, who also put on an appearance to make themselves wiser and more authoritative. So I'm not trying to pick on women for having issues that they're covering up with magic. People who use magic in the world of the Witcher have issues just like everyone else, which is why the stories are so good.)
I thought it was funny when the Sorceresses from Nilfgaard started to make themselves prettier after they met the others from the Lodge...

The interesting thing about Yen is that she's not _that_ vain actually. Being a hunchback is not just cosmetic like having a "crooked nose"; it's a huge health issue. And she's not perfect otherwise. Her lips are "thin and pale underneath lipstick", according to Geralt. She definitely invests into delaying aging - no-one can tell she´s over 90; and she may have some extra surgery invested into her breasts (after all, Geralt notices she doesn't need any "fancy contraptions" to keep them perky); but vanity isn't really that much of a problem in her case. Her biggest issue, the way I understand it, is that she's a control freak.
Wasn't Assire the only Nilfgaard sorceress we get to "meet"? And hey, it's a normal psychological reaction. Nobody wants to stand out from the crowd too much.

Well, it depends on the decisions you made earlier (you'll have to 'romance' both Triss and Yennefer), then the scene may appear before you sail to Skellige for the final confrontation with the hunt.....
