The only viper gear at 1st are those 2 swords. (The Hearts of Stone expansion has more specialised viper gear.) So the next ones would be whatever you come across 1st... Griffin, Feline, Wolven or Ursine witcher gear.
As for me, well, having the pc-version makes modding easy. so I do have a mod that has 'Viper Kaer Morhen' items. Makes me start with a full 'Viper' set (different then the one in the HoS expansion), but not with high stats, They're pretty basic. Enhanced Viper Kaer Morhen stuff starts at lvl 17 I think. And basically has the same stats as the 'normal' feline gear....

Hmm. the university is closed, on Radovids' order, so that could be the cause (the south part, beyond the bridge, is the university....)
On lvl 28 now, preapring for the 1st 'real major battle' in the game now. Got my 'superior Viper Kaer Morhen gear' (about the same level as 'enhanced Feline gear'). Played it many times already before, sometimes with just a little different setup regarding my fellow combatants (based on decisions made in previous quests). So I pretty much now what to expect, (the overall outcome is one of those fixed things). After this battle, I always feel a little sad.... yep, it truly is a 'RPG'......
had to run for it >.< went to the dude selling the passes to get into novingrad. wanted the experience points, don't really need it, i swam for it and now i fast track it between novingrad and velen. so, he was giving me a discount to help protect his friends from ghouls. ko'd like a dozen ghouls, they kept comin and comin. finally had to run. didn't see a monster nest to destroy. had to vamonos outta there.
300 points away from lvl 6.
cleared 2 monster nests, they dropped blue and green mutagens! no reds yet.
snuck in and grapped treasure the wyvern was guarding. it sounds angry, but i got the goods. found the map for catschool gear in the hut with Julia's diary. found the diagram for catschool crossbow, missing 1 ingredient for it.
need 2 more buckthorn to make the whale potion.
next point, need to put 1 in axii delusion. hoping i don't need to use up a slot for it to use in conversations.
You DO need a slot.... my advise, get all 3 point for delusion.... it will come in very handy....
the alchemist in noving rad has the potion of clearance, to reset all the points. potion a 1,000 crowns eeek
5 more lesser blue mutagens, can make greater blue mutagen.
need red. going for a fast attack build.
hate the scortch card. hate the card that draws matching cards out of the deck, okay when i do it, but ouchieee when opponent does it.
found another brothel in the south section of novingrad. played gwent to win the spending money.
haven't found keira metz. need her gizmo to break illusions on the secret walls and doors. found secret underground passage in oxenfurt, might be the way in to south oxenfurt, but illusion blocking the way.
the viper swords gives an extra 5% experience points, but they weak against the beasties closer to novingrad.
haven't found the beast oil diagram. found the enhanced beast oil, but the regular ole beast oil is an ingredient.
think lvl5 is strong enough to fight the basilisk guarding the treasure?
think there might be place of power around there.

If we're talking about the same basilisk, I think it's a high 20's level opponent.....

I could be wrong about the level, but pretty sure it's much higher then 5. And, well, wouldn't exactly call it an orphanage.....
Even though most of the velen quests are rated relatively low, (they are more or less designed to be played before the quests in the other regions) there are a few 'additional' quests that are more high level.
But you need to play the Velen quets to get your level up for the follolwing quests.. Novigrad quests are generlly higher level then Velen, And Skellige higher then Novigrad (with some side quest exceptions...)
Gotta aquire some cockatrice stomachs, and a few cave troll livers, problem is that:
1) killing a cockatrice isn't easy (need to find one 1st
) and if killed no guarantee you will get a stomach
2) I don't really kill Trolls without a very good reason, but again if I don't have a choice, killing them doesn't quarantee getting a liver....
So those ingredients are also just as rare as red mutagens. (So far, most of the red mutagens I collected are from one quest that is one of the games essential (pivotal?) quests...

Ciri has her own abilities... one available for this fight already (don't recall how its called, I always see it as kind of a 'flash jump' instead of Geralts dodging...)

thought was gonna be stuck in there 4eva, had a hard time defeating the golem. takes so long to reload afterr a ko. still learning how to roll outta the way. and mashing the button to drink water or tawny owl, a die trying to have a drink.
up to lvl 8 !! and now i have the illusion breaker thing, and the lamp. fast tracking back to novingrad, need a shave, a haircut, round of gwent, repair my armor, mebbe buy a lvl 8 sword, visit passaflora.
the beast oil recipe was in the cave. need bear fat >.< i'm pretty sure had some but sold it.
481 crowns, eeks, need a 1,000 to go to skellige. but lvl 8, the diagram says lvl 13
do i need armour piercing on silver sword? seems more a steel sword thing

So you've met the hunt now...... That is one of the things in game that puzzles me. It's obvious they're just mortal beings, not monsters or specters as they themselves would like others to see them. But you fight them with your silver sword... Steel would be more logical.... It'll be a while before you encounter again. As such, no direct need for an armour piercing rune stone on a silver sword, but I do keep one of the slots free on my higher level silver swords for that, just for the inevitable confrontation with the hunt later on in the game,,,,,,
Yeah, the baron is not all that bad, once you get to know more of his story... doesn't make him a saint though ......
Tracking an other Witcher now... slew a whole village, with the exception of one little girl. Lost his medaillon - school of the cat.
Got a feeling this is one of those quests were there is no 'good' choice to make (Witchers of the school of the cat have a bad reputation in the game's time-period .... )
my geralt is wearing an armour with red ribbons on the sleeve
was using witcher senses to search the tower of mice, mistook a ribbon for something to examine >.<
doing one more favour for Keira. spent a 1000 coin to buy the potion of clearance from her. for later, i think she moves on from the location, was afraid of missing a chance to nab it. if i can find my stash again tuck it away for later.
at lvl 10, now i need 1,500 xp points to level up woes
was a lovely picnic with Keira.
invited her to Kaer Morhan at the end of the quest.
she was so brave staying 'with' in the fight against the wild hunt badguy,
i let her keep the research papers.
learned no matter where my Geralt is in a boat, he can fast travel to the harbour at Oxenfurt. nice!! looked at the notice board, there a contract something about a singing troll. lol
Ah, yes, that troll; one of those many 'easter-eggs' and/or hidden jokes in game..... IIRC, the troll's name is a reference to a russian vocalist....
Finished the main quest line.... now into the Hearts of Stone quests....

lvl 12! it gave me 2 ap points.
i was going to talk to the lady about the white lady contract. on the way back saw 2 eternal fire bad guys going into a mage's house, helped to save the mage's family, the mage was a big help in the fight, an eternal fire cretin was lvl 30! got 500xp
lvl 13 gave only 1 ap point.
new steel sword stats is better than the griffin steel sword, +15 armo(u)r piercing.
tee hee, 55 armo(u)r piercing.
came with 2 rune slots, i put x2 +20 armor piercing runes.
forgot the name of my new chest armo(u)r, is a pretty green.
put 2 pts into the alternate yrden sign, tee heeee, i lay it down and it sends zaps at the approaching critters. cleared out an endriga nest. the sign is zapping them, they lose half their health by the time i start wacking them with my griffin silver sword.
dont get another slot til lvl 15.

I'm playing the PC version, so my inventory screen looks different anyway..... but it has changed during several updates of the game version; maybe a screenshot of an older version???

.... Guess I'll be off searching for the grandmaster diagrams 1st, gonna need all the best gear for fighting 'The Beast'....and probably the enhanced witcher mutations that may become available... if you do the quests for it.....

currently most of the way through 'blood and wine' after starting the storyline with new game +, but geralt stops leveling up after he hits 100, and that takes a lot of the fun out of the play...
