Isn't there a strip mall right next to you, Wooly?

Yep - full of fun places like a sub shop, a Whataburger, a gas station, an urgent medical care place, a payday loan shop, and a massage parlor! :ahhh:

Not a stripper in sight, though.

Hmmm...OK here's the plan; go to the businesses in the following order:
    1. payday loan shop to get cash
    2. Whataburger or sub shop or both for some eats
    3. the massage parlor for whatever... :red:
    4. the urgent medical care place to recover from 2 and 3

I can't find any activity for you at the gas station, since I think you mentioned you no longer drive. :)

Payday loan? Why not just ask the mob for some money?

Why not just get a desktop. You can get a double the power desktop for the same price as a decent laptop.

My issue is portability. I'm likely to move pretty often over the next 2-3 years, and towing a full-sized desktop/keyboard/mouse/monitor is prohibitively painful. :-S

What I HAVE been looking at are shoebox PCs - a touch slower than a desktop but about 1/8 the size. I'd just sell the monitor and keyboard, move the box and the mouse, buy new at the other end - and keep a tablet PC for always-online stuff.

Right now, everything I own fits in a large rolling suitcase and my backpack. :bug: I can literally move with 24 hours notice, and I like that! :)

I'm pretty sure I can get it all down to a shoebox PC, an Android tablet, and a Tablet PC. :-S

A shoebox computer is that like a all-in-one? My father-in-law has one from HP that is pretty powerful and small

It's basically a shrunk desktop - literally about the size of a shoebox or smaller. With the latest tech you can build one that rivals many full tower systems! :bug:

Very portable for moving (lightweight), for LAN parties and such. Not cheap, most seem to be about $750 when fully stuffed. :-S

Payday loan puts a lien on your pay if you don't pay them back.
Mob puts a lean on you if you don't pay them back, and breaks fingers, limbs or worse.

Not that again! Drinks and someone to share with...or at least talk to ;-) , according to him!

    Dana

I'm going on stripper hiatus for a while (lol)! Going to save up money, open a savings account, save up for a top-of-the-line laptop for 3D, and pile money on the credit card for a LONG vacation next year! I want to spend a week in Vegas, Sunday through Thursday, and explore! :)

I'll take the time to take the bus up and back, save wear and tear on my nerves. I think Fall 2014.

    Good luck with your plans.

    Dana

Thanks. We'll see if I can grow some self-control...! :ahhh: :ahhh:

I'm pretty motivated, though! Maybe lose weight and get a girlfriend.. hee hee! :snake: Hit one of those dating sights for old folks.. :red:

There's one in New England that says if you own a car you can get cash, and you can still keep your car. But they don't tell you until you sign on the dotted line that if you don't pay it back, then you don't get to keep your car. There are probably a lot of heartbroken people who borrowed a few hundred and lost their mutl-thousand dollar car.

I never understand using your vehicle as collateral. My parents have done that. They had a paid off car and refinanced something with the car as collateral and ended up losing the paid off car. I told them they were stupid at the time of doing it. My step-mother can be a persistent (fill in colorful words) and my dad just gives up.

Truthfully, it varies by location. :red: :red:

In the SF Bay Area, most of the smaller massage parlors are either controlled by a larger shady conglomerate (many of the massage parlor in Sunnyvale are run by the same corporation that runs 3-4 strip clubs in San Francisco). A few are independent if they don't make enough money to attract attention.

In larger areas, yeah, a lot of the high-traffic places are run by some kind of organized crime, but it's almost impossible to get hard proof of it. Eventually the cops or the FBI or Homeland Security finds a way to shut one down, but a new one will pop up to replace it.

The place in the strip mall is too small to be run by organized crime, I think maybe 2-3 girls work there at most - the place is TINY - so I suspect it's either an independent operation with the owner taking a cut of the girls income to run the place (a popular option) or run by one of the girls themselves. I knew of one place in San Jose that was a co-op, the girls ran the place like a legit business, profit-sharing and all.

Not like I'm an expert, but it seems I'm easy to talk to and, well, I listen. :red: :red:

It's not all as tawdry as the sensationalist press and media make it out to be, but in some places - yeah - it's as bad or worse.

It's super-easy to convince yourself that it won't happen to you that it'll happen to the other guy - especially when you have some high pressure salesdroid in your face telling you that you're stuff is safe(ish).

Dang, I'm tired. :blank: Slept until Noon Monday, couldn't get to sleep until almost 1:00AM last night, then up at 6:30AM this morning.

4 cups of coffee and I still feel like a rhinoceros ran over me. :blank:

Hopefully early to bed tonight. I've had way too much stress to deal with the past 10 days, but I think the worst is over.

...been wasting time again with IT rubbish. Last night had a "blue screen" event when I shut the workstation down. Not the BSOD, but still unnerving nonetheless. Of course what it displayed looked like gibberish to me and gave no clue as to what caused it though it did create a .dmp file which I'm not sure what to do with.

After that cleared the system continued running so just left it continue for a few moments when it rebooted to the startup options screen (the one which lets you start in Safe Mode) which also had a message that Windows had not shut down properly.

I selected the "Normal" mode and it restarted as usual with no issues. I let it run for a few minutes then, clicked "Shut Down" again, and it closed down without issue.

Today I've been on the MS site and forums to try and get a handle on what occurred and for the most part, it apparently is caused by an outdated driver. There was a driver utility I did DL and install today, but it was something relating to the MB's monitoring of temperature so I don''t think that was the cause or this would have occurred earlier as I kept getting messages about it for a while.

WHile on the MS site, I checked the updates to find there are some 138 files to DL and install (about 400MB worth) but from what I can tell they primarily relate to Internet Explorer security issues (I use FF when I do have to go online to register something), save for a Malware scanner and several relating to NET Framework (not sure what this is supposed to do as the FF assistant for this on my notebook is disabled with a message that it is not compatible).

As to security, I have the full Norton IS suite on the workstation though when offline, it is set to silent mode as anything that is downloaded on the notebook and transferrred to the workstation has to go through the same firewall setup

Again I have the .dmp file but am unable to view it as I need one of the Debug tools (there are something like 7 different ones).

...needless to say, I am a bit on edge about this as I finally got things working the way they should be.

...time for a break, happy hour has arrived.

KK, I can name at least one thing you have that requires the security updates for the .NET framework...Taozen's DAZ History Manager. If you have that, you have the .NET framework on your system. If you have anything that was written with Visual Studio, which a lot of applications are, then you have it and should get the security updates.

Taozen's programs also use Internet Explorer for the browser functions (as do a lot of things), so even if you use Firefox you should keep IE patched.
