...probably one of the smarter moves MS has done. As an "on site" mobile device to assist with monitoring & recording processes, pulling up patient charts, or tracking inventory movement (with a built in barcode scanner) & the such they'd be great, but I agree sitting at a desk and working on one for 8 hours in place of a standard terminal or PC would be a real pain. I don't even like those Apple flat keyboards as they have no feedback.

...and WIndoze 8, Ugh. Just one of the fears I have going back into the workplace along with Offence 2010, Two ideas that seem designed to impede rather than enhance workflow.

Need to find some place where they still use XP and Office 2K.

Yeah when I installed Poser 8 and pro 2010 on my old machine, I ran into the same issue. For me Flash is one of those scary plugins as I often heard it mentioned as being a doorway for infection due to it's seemingly ongoing instability.

...and it's made by the same people who bring us Photoshop who want new users to work in the clouds. Over on another forum I have been hearing that some are bailing and either sticking with the version they already have or even switching to GIMP.

Without Flash Player, a lot of web sites won't work...including the Comcast home pages. It's not that scary, as long as you keep it updated. And don't visit sites that are unknown or untrusted. I have Poser Pro 2010. I only used it once so far. I don't remember if it needed Flash Player or not. I did find it easier to work with than I thought it would be.

I am still using Photoshop CS2. Not because of fears of update, because of no money for them. However, I'm not sure how this cloud thing works for it. So what if, for example, the cloud service has too many connections, or servers go down? Does that mean I can't do any Photoshop work? I don't like that idea at all. We here all know how cloud services can cause headaches (cough *ClodFlare* cough). And so reliable! :-/ It seems like these big companies are going way off course in deciding how we want to work. Like Microsoft thinking we all want our computers' interfaces to look like smart phones! Or that we want to do work on tablets. Survey says...not so much. Almost all tablet users use them for fun, social media, and emails...not for work.

    Dana

    ...indeed.

Tablets could be useful in the workplace (which is what I hoped would happen) as they could make great "electronic clipboards" in places like labs, hospitals, factories, warehouses, etc, tied into to the facility's central intranet hub through their built in wireless (kind of like the "Data Pads" in Star Trek). Unfortunately, the manufacturers seem more fit to market them as nothing more than expensive "playtoys".
In the case of hospitals... there's an unfortunate side-effect to that, that most people don't consider.

When casenotes are in fully electronic form, including lab results, other specialists writeups, opinions, data dumps from diagnostics machines, other cross-referenced disease cases etc that may be relevant, the medical professional has to spend (a lot) more time reading what is on the screen, making sure they don't miss anything in the patent's history (because it might be relevant), rather than actually just _asking_ the patient "yo, what's going down?"... observing the patient... comparing the patient's symptoms with what they've seen before etc etc. With all that extra time required to enter electronic data accurately (not all medical specialists are touch-typists after all), along with extra time required to see what other specialists have written about the patient... it's not leaving much time for the "human touch" in the medical setting.

The technology appears quite spiffy on the surface, of course - having all that data there in one spot, having links to backup information, no more problems with unreadable handwriting, having it backed up and available wherever the patient happens to be... but there's a balance to be struck, that we're not quite there with (afaik).

    $0.02c.

A doctor should be reading that info anyway. Asking a patient in a hospital bed what's up is not the only thing that is needed. A lot of people don't mention things because they think it's insignificant, or don't like to complain, etc. And what if the doctor doesn't ask the right questions? No, that doesn't happen, right? the doctor needs to know about medications and herbal supplements you take. That info should be in the computer. Having all the data there, in a properly organized and hierarchical schema that is easy to navigate, is a lot more efficient than asking a patient if he/she is taking x because there are combinations of what he plans to prescribe and x that make for bad side effects. There are a lot of combinations that will produce those side effects. Will the doctor remember all of them, and ask about them? No, that doesn't happen, either. My doctor prescribed a high dosage of ibuprophen for pain after I was rear-ended at an exit a few years back. That same doctor had been on me about my blood pressure being too high. Then I found out, on my own, that ibuprophen, as do all other NSAIDs, has one particular side effect...elevated blood pressure! A properly cross-referenced electronic record would have shown that relationship.

A workman, doctors included, need several tools to do their job well...not just one. Proper bedside manor and a tablet with instant look-up of patient data should both be in the tool belt, not just one of them. Waiting until we're ready is not the right thing. Getting them used to having the new tool now is the right thing.

    Another $0.02

I think finding a place where they will stick to Windows XP is going to be an endless, fruitless, adventure. Microsoft is ending support for XP early next year. When that happens, any holes that hackers find will be pure joy for them. I'm actually in a bit of a panic because of that. I can't afford upgrading to Windows 7, but I'm going to have to do my best very soon. I sure could use the extra RAM capabilities anyway.

...ugh, good weather for staying indoors. More of the same for tomorrow and on...

Been in constant pain since last week.

Feeling it more than I did last year. Now it's in the leg bones, not just the joints. Don't even know how I will be able to handle a day on the job as lately I've been laying down for a nap in the middle of the day to get all the weight off my ankles, knees, and hips for a bit.

I need to win that Megabucks Jackpot Now! so I can move somewhere where it;'s warm and reasonably dry.

I feel bad for you. I hope it gets better. Have some chili peppers! Maybe in a salsa or dip, or in a nice chili with beans. Capsaicin supposedly helps ease joint and muscle pain.

...yeah. should be a bit nicer next weekend (well not really warm but at last no rain or wind).

Agh, this is the final week of my initial UC benefits. Supposedly I am to get a letter from them about applying for the first extension. On a few pins and needles here to say the least.

...thank you. Things here are still really bad (both weather- and economy-wise).

The "official" unemployment rate has been hanging around 8% but that is only based on the number of documented claims. In reality the actual (U6) rate is nearly 17%, putting us behind Michigan (the state hit the hardest during the recession) and only surpassed by Nevada (19%) and California (20%).

Oregon is also a state with a high underemployemnt rate as well in spite of sharp increases in the cost for just about everything from rent to, food, to transportation, and all the upscale development that is occurring in Portland. There really is no industrial base here since the timber industry dried up. The largest companies are Intel (which has a habit of pushing older employees out the door to hire new ones at a lower wage), Adidas, and Nike (both which have farmed out most of their manufacturing overseas). Other than that it's "niche" high tech jobs that require a lot of specialised qualifications and schooling, medical occupations (similar), and low paying service/labour jobs, the latter which make up the largest portion. Many of the openings I have been seeing tend to be out in the far western and southern burbs which would involve commutes even worse than I had to deal with at my former employer (the transit system here still thinks everyone works in the city centre).

Add to that how I have been feeling over the last week from a physical standpoint (since the rainy season began) and its beginning to look pretty discouraging to say the least.

It also doesn't help having a skill set more appropriate for a pretty 20 - 30 something than an old bugger like myself.

Going to have to drag myself out in the lousy weather tomorrow to apply for SNA (what used to be known as food stamps). so I have something to fall back on until I get this extension thing worked out.

    ...non RL complaint.:

Pose sets that zero out the character. Was having a bit of trouble getting Vi's leg and foot positions to look correct, so I decided to use a stock pose and then modify it. Unfortunately when I selected it, she was sent back to the 0.0,0 x,y,z coordinate and her all the adjustments to her facial expression was zeroed as well. So had to spend about the last ninety minutes redoing everything that was undone (having to run several more render tests to make sure the lighting on her looks like it's supposed to) . This seems so inconsistent as there are other pose sets I've used which leave the character where she is and the facial expressions intact.

KK I never asked for that weather to be sent down here next weekend. It seems somebody decided I need a few days of it too. Please do me and my friend Arthur a favor and send it elsewhere. Don't claim you have no control over it, just find the national weather service site and do a roll back for Bama. You know, restore my weather to the nice cool but dry stuff I have now. I read you can do restores now so I'm leaving it all up to you.

The Monster is starting to show some real signs of life. Adding all those little tid bits I just have to have is not FUN. Twenty plus years of program collecting, plugin collecting, 3D collecting, sound tools, editing tools and other such things make for long setups. Install, register when required, configure installed program. Exit prg, boot prg, test prg then followed with next program and then more of the same, rinse repeat.

The only good thing is each little step is yet one more step forward. First DS4.6 test render went well but now I need my extras like all my custom Scripts and Actions added to my interface in a better setup than I had in my DS4.0 based interface. Clean slates just beg for better than the last version in my book.

Be Well all. Still in almost ready to PLAY mode. I'll play (more, not saying I've not played some) when I get Frankie walking and talking better than the old PC.

The younger of my two sisters lives way up in Maine, wayyyyyy up. In the town she lives in, they don't even hesitate to give food stamps and such. The unemployment level is so very high. Of course, it begs the question...why does anyone want to live there. Sure it must be pretty...but pretty doesn't put food on the table...unless it's a pretty model who works elsewhere and comes home with the money.

After this storm passes us by off the coast, we're looking at upper 70s this week, and Wednesday is expected to get into the 80s! Looks like I have a little more time for one or two more outdoor projects before the hibernation begins! :smirk:

...well, as I understand what we have been hit with the last couple days is the remnant of a Pacific Typhoon Hopefully the mountains will break it up so it loses a lot of punch.

Best we'll see after it's finally over is maybe the mid 60s.
