We are opening in Colorado kinda, but not Denver.

Today, the Target my flatmate works at was hit by protestors, stuffing masks into the toilets and flooding the bathrooms. For half the day, the workers there had no bathroom.

I have watched him come home, in pain, sore, with a headache, and just exhausted every work day. I see the faces of essential workers on TV, bruised, worn down beyond their years, in tears, and desperately asking for 'Stay at home' controls to stay in force. I would rather eat dried beans and rice dishes to allow meat packing plants the time to reorganize so workers can have some chance of working safely.

In the United States, polls are showing more than 80% of the population are in favor of controls and not opening. They understand the science.

Please be kind to the essential workers, support them where you can, be generous with your consideration.

    Mary

    ...sad.

Someone could make a fortune manufacturing and selling copper foil wrapping,  as the virus dies quicker on copper than on any other surface apparently.
copper alloy has some unique properties, it is naturally anti-microbial – it kills bacteria and viruses, from E. coli and flu to the super bug MRSA [1] (within a few hours of contact)

Copper also kills slugs and snails, but not for the same reasons

It's part of the reason why pennies and certain types of keys have a terrible smell to them. You're litterally smelling the dead and rotting bacteria on them. Also why pennies tasted yucky when you put them in your mouth as a little kid.

Of course pennies aren't copper any more.  They are copper plated Zinc.

Well zinc kills bad stuff too so it's all good!  ;-)

I'm still playing the hermit. I'm also considering dietary and hygiene changes for those occasions when I do go out. Time to do the onion, Limburger, garlic, and anchovy sandwiches, and see if I can get the local skunk to spray a pair of trousers for me. And then see just how many people are willing to crowd me ...

Pennies aren't even pennies anymore in my country. Canada eliminated the penny a few years ago. I still have a jar full of them somehwere around here.

What happens if something costs $5.41 or something? It just gets rounded up or down?

As for how I'm dealing with the quarantine... I work as a performer (actor/musician). This year's theatre season is cancelled and all the bars are closed. Luckily I've got a security guard license and my boyfriend owns a private security firm. I got the license so I could help him out when he's understaffed and he's currently understaffed so at least I'm one of the lucky ones who still has employment unlike a lot of my performer friends. Kind of stressful still working as an essential worker. Luckily Animal Crossing takes my mind off a lot of my woes and even gives me a creative outlet.

Here's a Daz/Animal Crossing video I made for shirts and giggles.

Well if you're paying by debit (which most people are doing these days because of the plague) then it just charges you a penny, but if you're paying cash then they round down to the nearest 5 cents.

Or still have enough cash in hand to enjoy at home. Or receiving cash from state without any work. The polls are not showing if those all 80% are actually afraid of death by virus. By the way currently I am still stay at home because not enough people showed up to properly run my business and also stay at home is almost optional from Monday and only mendatory for co-morbid people.

It does here in Denmark, where they removed 1, 2, 5, 10 and 25 "ore" coins long ago.  1 crown is 100 ore so smallest is 50 ore (½ crown) - 1 crown is currently about 1/7 $.  Almost all prices in supermarkets these days are in whole crowns, it's rare to see something like 4.95 or even 4.50.

    The 50 ore is made of bronze - 97 % copper, 2,5 % zink and 0,5 % tin, weight 4.3 grams.

Here our largest supermarket chain has a system where you can drop your stuff directly into your own bags after scanning the barcode with a mobile app connected with your credit card.  When checking out you just scan a QR code, show the green  "Paid" screen on the phone to the person at the counter, and the system registers everything, charges you card automatically, and stores the receipt on your phone.  No need to stand in line at checkout.

I know my employer is in it for the long haul when it comes to keeping staff remote...thankfully we were able to go fully remote for about 19,000 employees in a very short time and so far haven't had many problems in terms of network bandwidth. They actually just added back Skpe video capabilities. The great thing is that this whole ordeal is making them rethink real estate and the potential to keep more people home if they want it. I've been working from home since 2009 and my department has always been very remote-friendly, but there are some areas of the company that have yet to jump on board to that idea despite the fact that the insurance industry can largely operate in a completely remote environment...without a degradation in customer service. In fact, giving employees the option to work remote will actually increase productivity for many people. Some people like going into the office...some people don't. I hated it.

Safeway here in the US has special coupons you can scan using the store app, however I have an older phone that cannot be upgraded to Android 6 so that feature doesn't work.

If it's anything like the apps we have here, you are expected to weigh the produce in the store and select from the list just like the cashier would normally do. For meat, etc that is wrapped by someone behind a counter, they should provide a bar code on the wrapped paper package.

...saves a lot of stress and money not having to commute. Between four and a half to five hours of my workday day were just taken up with just getting to and from work, (a good part of it waiting for connections and standing on crowded buses) at 100$ a month for a transit pass. I used to be totally drained by the time I got home and slept though half my Saturday I was so exhausted by Friday.  It seemed my whole life was nothing but the job and commuting which began to seriously wear on me as I got older.

There is a downside to remote working. You have to be very self disciplined about the hours, and it is much more difficult to forget any work stress as you finish, there is no commute to act as a break point dividing work from home life.

    Regards,

    Richard

Try living on nothing - a lot are at the moment, a secure regular garanteed income would be nice for them, especially something that more than covers the rent, and I believe in the US you all just got a rather nice stimulus payment, if this does go on all year well lets just say for many that will not bode well.

My workplace has already agreed to my proposal to work from home more even after the pandemic. I don't mind coming to the office but I said this work from home period has shown we don't need to sit in the office all day all week along. In my job I can't really fully work from home because I have to visit clients. But during periods where I'm not, I will be working more hours remote even in the future.

So I will at least work from home for several more months. A lot of my colleagues are eager to return to work in the office but I really don't like it.

For the record, not everyone in the US got a stimulus check, and quite often it doesn't cover the rent at all (at least that's what I understand from outside the US)

Of course any government help is still better than nothing.

No, not everybody got a check.  And one size doesn't fit all.  It could have been done better.  Which is one of the reasons some people are protesting, perhaps a bit too vehemently though.sad
