Down here in Italy. Move your freebies elsewhere, that place is dying.

I have checked and you can download ZIPs from deviantArt even if you are not logged in.

Dratted shame, but you may be right about sCG: I'm not a big fan of dA myself, as it seems so overrun with adolescent AniManga fanporn and "lookit-I did-another-Anthro-elf" pencils.

Planit3D is a husk, 3DCommune is gone entirely (six years ago? seven?), and so are many of the other best sites.

Perhaps "Reports Of ShareCG's Death Have Been Greatly Exaggerated" ;o)

DA has some absolutely amazing stuff if you can face digging through the dross, and Renderosity is always a good alternative for freebies (although they're going through website redesign birthing pains again).

Nothing malicious was going on - they just had some hardware problems with their name-server. Everything should be back to normal now

www.sharecg.com is immediately looked up as 192.168.102.232 and then the ping times out. Either the DNS entries are wrong (b.t.w., could somebody from e.g. US do a ping to see whether it is resolved to the same IP address?) or sharecg servers are misconfigured or completely down.

Seriously, I think that it is time to think to alternatives to ShareCG, hoping that the Poser/Studio community does not fragment more than what is already now.

That is odd? I just typed www.sharecg.com into a DNS lookup here http://ping.eu/nslookup/ and I get the same - 192.168.102.232
(Trying DAZ, Renderosity, RuntimeDNA, etc I get sensible IP addresses)
P.S. I'm in Thailand

I too get 192.168.102.232, but 192.168.*.* are private network addresses, not Internet addresses. No wonder no one can connect...

More information about the original problem

(my paraphrasing of a new reply from IBSystems):

- Something went wrong with the name-server.
- The main name-server was sending people to nowhere.
- The problem was fixed at ShareCG's end within a few hours.
- However, the incorrect data was cached for up to 10 days. all over the world.

I've also asked about the 192.168.102.232 - hoping for a reply on that.

192.168.102.232 is what it currently resolves to for me, and I'm having no problems accessing ShareCG at the moment.

It does seem wrong though - and I'd guess that the "ABE deny" warning that people with the Firefox NoScripts add-on were/(are?) getting is related to this.

(and a reverse IP Lookup on 192.168.102.232 is rather meaningless)

If I try to access sharecg.com from the UK I get 1 of the following errors - 'Page Could Not Be Displayed as the Server Is Not Responding' or I get 'Error 402 Forbidden.

Yet if I use a VPN and set it to USA or JAPAN then sharecg.com works fine

Understood and fixed (assembly is required, batteries not included).

IP is back to 192.168.102.232, with both Telecom Italia and Google DNS's so someone is playing dirty tricks with DNS records.

Fix: add the entry

66.220.4.54 www.sharecg.com;

to the hosts file.

Look in Network Connection/Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)/ Properties, click on use the following DNS Server adresses, and if the DNS server is set to 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 (Google Servers) try changing it to 209.244.0.3, this is the alternative one I use, or 8.26.56.26, another DNS Server, and see if that helps.

Back in post #125 It was mentioned that "However, the incorrect data was cached for up to 10 days all over the world." - so I guess that's all those pesky DNS servers?

So maybe it's just a case of:

a) modifying your hosts file (as latego suggested)
b) specifying a fixed DNS server that you know has the correct data (as Fishtales mentioned)
c) waiting till whatever DNS server you go through catches up

If someone is doing bad things with DNS records, it is pointless to change DNS since they replicate/call to higher authority and changes (even bad ones) spread around.

If you go to http://www.webdnstools.com/dnstools/dns-lookup you can amuse yourself with the mess that is taking place (e.g. the correct IP of sharecg goes to 54.subnet0.4.220.66.in-addr.arpa ?!?!)

I notice you started that with an "If...", and you may be right. But I'm an optimist, and I like Occam's razor - i.e. the simplest answer is most likely the correct one. :)

The reply I had from IBSystems sounds feasible, as does the bit about DNS servers taking time to update ( and a quote from the page you mention sort-of backs that up "These tools may be useful to people configuring web servers and web sites. It is often helpful to be able to see what DNS information other web servers are seeing to make it possible to troubleshoot problems. Particularly after making DNS changes, when cached entries mean that different DNS servers can return different results.")

Until it's all resolved I'm just keeping my fingers crossed! :)

While I was able to get on yesterday for a short time, I can't access ShareCG today. However, while doing a Google search for a particular 3D model, I cane across another site ShareAEC which appears to be a near copy of ShareCG. The page layout and design is like that of ShareCG but only the 3D model section is available (no Poser or DAZ Studio).
So I'm really wondering what the significance of ShareAEC is in relation to ShareCG

I was able to get on several times very late last night, I didn't download or upload anything, as I was only checking if it was back up... But early this morning and right now, all I get is timeouts.
I suppose I need a time out, but I was hoping the problem was fixed...
David Heller left?
I wonder what really goes on over there... I tried to find an email from him that linked to an "open letter to ShareCG members"... I think it was some sort of explanation of what was going on at the time back then... now it just leads to the page and a 404 error notice... but I believe it sorta said who he was and what it was like there, what they hoped to do, given their resources... I'm pretty sure thats how I got the impression of him being the owner and SCG being his pet project, one man show kinda thing... maybe I blended that with someone's post or second hand info on him at the time... But that surprised me to hear he left... but then again I just found out a week or so ago that a very well known artist/modeler (at one time) who everyone thought had died of cancer, probably did not and actually went missing a year after he was supposed to have died... weird... Well, at least I admit I'm crazy, so thats right out front there... oh well.
Whatever... its just the internet...
Well, I hope this clears up soon, whomever is running the show.

Edited to add- This probably means nothing, but when I did get on last night, it was quickly, and that ugly weird banner was gone...
