Unwinnable Tutorial scenario in Zoo Tycoon 1!

So, the first Dinosaur Digs mission.... You go over the new features and stuff, then get an Allosaurus, then set it free (haha) and then put it back in its pen. Simple enough right?

Well I somehow screwed up the mission and made it uncompletable.

I was at the part where you bulldoze one of the walls so the dino escapes, but as I was doing so the science guy was fiddling about by the allosaur. The moment I bulldozed a wall section, the dinosaur promptly ate the guy then began to wander towards the now open fence. So far, things are progressing as the tutorial wanted.... Except for since I'm down one scientist (Who's now in the belly of a dinosaur) it's telling me I need to hire one to care for an egg that's long since hatched. Except I can't hire one because the tutorial greyed that option out after I hired the first one, so I can't hire a replacement for the one that got eaten.

And of course, it's not counting the escaped dinosaur section of the tutorial as accomplished (Even though he's currently at an ice cream stand getting ice cream, well outside of his exhibit) because the scientist hiring section is counting as Incomplete - due to the aforementioned scientist currently being inside a dinosaur. With no way to solve the Hire a Scientist section and move on to the Free the Dinosaur section, even though it's already freed, I simply quit the mission and moved on. It's not required to unlock any future missions anyhow.

You'd think they'd program in some safeguards for in case things like this happen XD
Still, was pretty interesting to see me break the mission like that! Bad timing on my part, since the first time I did this mission on my older laptop the science guy was wandering around outside when the allosaur went outside to get some ice cream from the shops. Pretty sure I wouldn't have botched things if I hadn't broke the gates down while he was standing next to the thing

Kobayashi Maru of Zoo Tycoon? Kirk would have cheated.
Seriously though, what would top off a meal of science guy better than ice cream?

I come from the land of ice and snow... :ahhh:

Made it in to work after an hour-long wait for the taxi. :blank: Five to seven inches of snow yesterday, very little de-icing done, back roads are a mess.. saw 2 wrecks on the way in. The driver was REAL good, though, so I made it to work without any issues.

Buses running snow routes, which means main roads only. My bus IS running today, whew! I need to go hit the bank at lunch. Blech.

Oh well, back to work..

    i like this song

    I can't stand to fly
    I'm not that naive
    I'm just out to find
    The better part of me
I'm more than a bird, I'm more than a plane
I'm more than some pretty face beside a train
And it's not easy to be me
    Wish that I could cry
    Fall upon my knees
    Find a way to lie
About a home I'll never see
It may sound absurd, but don't be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed, but won't you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
It's not easy to be me
Up, up and away, away from me
It's all right, you can all sleep sound tonight
    I'm not crazy, or anything
    I can't stand to fly
    I'm not that naive
    Men weren't meant to ride
    With clouds between their knees
I'm only a man in a silly red sheet
Digging for kryptonite on this one way street
Only a man in a funny red sheet
Looking for special things inside of me
    Inside of me
    Inside me
    Yeah, inside me
    Inside of me
    I'm only a man
    In a funny red sheet
    I'm only a man
    Looking for a dream
    I'm only a man
    In a funny red sheet
    And it's not easy
Its not easy to be me

The snow and ice is melting - up to 44F now - and the entire city has turned into a giant dirt-flavored Slurpee. :blank: Soaked my ankles while I was making a bank run. :blank:

Lunch was an A1 Ultimate Bacon Cheeseburger! A1 sauce, bacon, 2 flame-broiled patties and onion.. soooo tasty. Me so fat now. :red:

Five For Fighting's "Superman" is one of my favorite songs, too. :)
They used to play it in the background on "Smallville". Very appropriate lyrics because Clark was afraid to fly until the very last episode.
Hope your ankle is better by now.

Mmm dat reminds me, there was a 'challenge scenario' someone made for Civilization IV I always wanted a few friends of mine to try, but I wouldn't warn 'em about the "nasty surprise" the author added in. Or rather, what he removed.

Since Terre and the others are unlikely to read this or even try the scenario to begin with, I'll just go out and explain it. It was basically a situation just like that. Over at Realms Beyond they've got these Adventures and Epics that they do from time to time, where players are presented with some challenge or scoring mechanic. In most cases, the main goal is just to survive (And in some of the games, merely surviving is indeed a victory). This one was done in response to both the constant complaining about anything short of a perfect/godly start, and people stating the author's previous games were too easy.

Sounds like a recipe for trouble here.

What he did? He created the game as normal... Except he put all the AIs on one continent, and then put the player off on his own on a much smaller continent, distanced so no contact can be made before Optics/Astronomy. Basically, no tech trading and no resource trading for the first half of the game. Which brings into account the second thing he changed: He removed every resource off the player's island. All of them. No fish, no crab, no copper, no iron, no coal or uranium... All of it. The AI on the other hand, got to keep all theirs. Then he bumped the difficulty up to Immortal just to further screw the players over ;)
    http://realmsbeyond.net/civ/c4tourney/adv26.html

Of course, he never told anyone what he did to the map. He just said "just try and survive, and surprise!"

And sure enough, every player but one lost this game.

Realms Beyond does some pretty interesting stuff, and in fact my choice to buy Civilization IV came from reading the 'reports' one of their members wrote down
    http://www.garath.net/Sullla/civ4SP.html

Not only does he write them in an interesting to read way, and explain why he does or does not do something - and providing witty commentary along the way - but he also has PICTURES. And lots of them
