    Tax day!

I had to file taxes this year. Mostly don't have to anymore (retired & too poor) but this year I had a small inheritance from my step-mother and only received the official paper work for it a week or so ago. I checked my friendly neighborhood tax person and got the bad news that I was over the limit for State Income taxes and had to file, but thankfully didn't have to file for Federal Income taxes. However, I'm out of practice filling out tax forms and time was short so I let the tax lady do all the work for me. Yesterday I returned to her office and signed the paperwork and she said she'd file electronically. It turns out that I didn't actually have to pay any taxes but the paperwork to prove that, still had to be filed and I had to pay her $50 for doing the work. I consider it almost cheap insurance to make sure I don't booger up the situation.

HOWEVER, today while sitting snuggly in my chair watching Perry Mason and munching chocolate cake. I get a call (I get very few calls, perhaps 4 a month so unexpected ones scare me anyway) and it was my tax lady! Oh, god, what's gone wrong I thought. So she starts out with "I had a little problem with filing your tax forms..." Oh, no, I think, here it comes... I'm in trouble now... how much is it going to cost me?... But then she says "Your form was rejected..." NO, NO NO I continue to panic internally... I can't deal with this. What $@@%#$# bureaucratic snafu is going to drag me through the thorns for 6 months till I get this straightened out, has my identity been stolen, are there back taxes that I owe? NO, NO NO. then after a long pause she says "I need your birth date". Oh... is that all? OK.

After my heart stopped fibrillating and my breathing slowed down I finished my cake and tea and got back to Perry Mason.

Do they ever? I find most of them don't really care. I see people tossing butts out the window as they drive down the scenic highways in New Hampshire, as they pass a National Forest sign with Smokey the Bear on it, and the sign says today's risk is high.

I'd better stop...you hit on a real sore spot with me.

...same situation out here during the summers. Gonna be a bad fire season this year as winter was so dry and the mountain snowpack is only a fraction of what it should be.

We are starting to see some out of control fires here as well. The season for controlled burns ended on 31st March, but some do tend to ignore that and burn late, and we have had a spell of unseasonal warm dry weather and a spate of uncontrolled fires to go with it. Maybe they are not as Wild and large as you get, but they do a lot of damage still. This one, currently burning has managed to encroach on a tyre dump.

    ...burning tyres, yuck.

Hope they catch those arsonists and throw the book at them.

Here we also have special teams dedicated to just fighting wildfires so that local fire services are not strained. Would be real bad if a town's fire service were out fighting a field blaze and there was a house or business fire back in town.

...now here's a fire that's been burning for a very long time:

    Burning Mountain Australia

Then some idiots in Wyoming want to deliberately set an underground coal seam on fire near both the Thunder Basin National Grassland and Niobrara underground shale oil and gas basin.

    underground coal gasification project

The fire at Hazelwood was extinguished, took three months and hundreds of firefighters. Burning mountain is a bit of Aussie humour there, iz more like an incline or undulation, depends where you are
