Lest ye think I be kidding about the manure factory.

...years ago, just as Portland's "Pearl District" began to undergo all the upscale development, there was a fertilizer plant across the street from the Bridgeport Brewery. Now while I like good beer the I will admit some of the "aromas" of the brewing process (particularly when they pitch the yeast) can be pretty foul. Now combine that with the "bouquet" of manure from the fertilizer plant, the stagnant pools of water in the gravel alleyway that runs by the brewery, and add a gleaming new five story luxury condo building, complete with balconies, only a block away into the mix.

Now imagine plunking down 400,000$ for a condo on say the 4th floor sliding open the glass door to step out on the balcony and take a deep breath first thing in the morning...

...then gagging as you run to the phone to call in sick at your job.

    ...priceless.

Is it sharecg.com ? or www.sharecg.com or both

Is it sharecg.com ? or www.sharecg.com or both

    The full URL is http://www.sharecg.com

The "http://" specifies which communication protocol (language) should be used to read the data at the site designated by the remainder of the URL.

The "sharecg.com" part is the domain name of the site. The "www." in front of it specifies which server should be first contacted at the domain. In this case the service would normally be World Wide Web information originally in http (HyperText Transport Protocol) format. However, modern servers can provide more than one type of service so you could get other service if you specified a different protocol at the front of the URL.

The "http://" part is not always necessary because the name servers for the organization assumes you will be wanting the http protocol when you initially contact their domain. Other services are available using other protocols like File Tranport Protocol (FTP) If you wanted their File Transport service you'd specify ftp://www.sharecg.com/somefilename .

Also, I believe that most modern browsers pick up on the fact that you've left off the "http://" part and will either provide it for you or will do a search to find a domain that matches. I admit that I'm rusty on how that actually works these days. But the point is, you don't really need the "http://" but it doesn't hurt and does help make sure you get the exact site and protocol that you want and are not misdirected by errant or malicious search engines. I usually don't worry about the "http://" anymore and drop it.

The "www." is not always necessary because the name servers for most modern sites assume you want their website service and create an equivalence to their Home Web Page server. Out of 40 years of habit I still use the "www" part, though I sometimes don't have to.

Also, did you know that in a URL the part that comes AFTER the domain name is usually case sensitive but the domain name and the stuff in front of it is NOT case sensitive.

i.e. HttP://wwW.sHaReCg.CoM is the same as http://www.sharecg.com is the same as "www.shaRecg.com" is the same as sHarecg.cOm

but "http://www.sharecg.com/Dogs" is not the same as "http://www.sharecg.dogs" (where "Dogs" or "dogs" are two separate pages of the website.

I heard about a wind storm in Salt Lake City. I hope the Daz staff is ok. I-80 is closed near the Nevada border. I think it will snow tonight? So the weather goes from 70 degrees to 30 degrees in less than 24 hours? Wow.

I thought abrupt weather changes like this only happened in Texas. Hmmm, maybe we annexed Nevada.

    Finally caught up again.

The recycled body was a 49-year old homeless man from downtown. The senior tech from Time-Warner never showed up today. Two gasoline cans are missing from my front porch. Our predicted severe thunderstorms turned out to be mostly noise, just a tiny sprinkle of rain drops that didn't even cover the sidewalk. Results are in from yesterday's visit to the dr. Prescription called in for UTI, referral to cardiologist.

Other than that, I have no complaints. Nice salad, sammich, and strawberry ice cream for lunch. Roast chicken ready to be eaten for dinner.

Why would you have gasoline cans on your front porch? I would think that's something that should be out back, and not actually in or on the building. Too tempting to crooks, vandals and stupid teens pulling a prank when in plain sight like that.
