and .... I look at you all sitting there holed up in your houses with your toilet paper collected in crowded supermarkets with your urban tractors eating packaged carbohydrates

    staying safe and  healthy

while I put my health at risk with my solitary walks in the fresh air every other day to buy my fresh fruit and vegetables cheeky

how many of you have a cigarette in your hand

...I have a glass of Irish whiskey. No ciggie, don't smoke them.and couldn't if I did because my building is a no smoking zone.

I wish I could take a nice walk this weekend but it has been snowing here (yeah 5 days before the official start of spring) as well as very cold and blustery (coldest it's been all winter).  Braved the wind, snow, and cold to go to the Boozateria across the street as I needed to resupply the "medicine cabinet".  the only good thing about the cold and snow is it got the pollen out of the air so my allergies abated for a bit.

Only have one pack of bog rolls, which I bought before the panic emptied the shelves at the market down the street, should last into next month.

Yeah need to go to the market frequently for the fresh veggies and fruits. but not until the weather improves.

India has fortunately seen a fewer number of confirmed cases of COVID-19, despite being the neighbour of the epicentre of the outbreak, China. The number of confirmed cases have crossed 80,000 in China, 5,000 in South Korea and 2,000 in Italy. In India, so far, only six confirmed cases have been reported. The spread has been limited in India despite its dense population and inadequate hygiene in the urban centres.

Not just the present coronavirus outbreak, even the earlier epidemics like MERS, SARS, Ebola and yellow fever, which killed thousands across Asia, America and Africa, had a minimal impact in India. Therefore, scientists suggest that the viral infections of this category may not spread as rapidly in India as they did in countries with colder climate as high temperature and humidity could be making it difficult for viruses to survive and remain potent.

    https://weather.com/en-IN/india/science/news/2020-03-04-weather-the-real-hero-saving-india-coronavirus-experts-conflicted

I wonder where you get your impressions from. Perhaps too much media influence that only loves to marginalize foreign socio-economic conditions to boost domestic viewership. The western media won't gain viewerships if they tell you that India's resilience during this crisis (despite its challenges) has been far effective than developed nations with all their technology and resources. They would be contradicting themselves if they tell you that the Indian infrastructure has proven more resilient at handling the present crisis. If there is less concern for outbreak in India it only shows how far and and inaccurate your perceptions are.

If you really think temperature is a factor then there are other tropical countries in south east asia and latin americas (even australia) which are not as fortunate as us.

Almost everyone is counting how many people got sick in their country but nobody in the media today is talking about an important metrics - cases per million population. This alongside the population density should be the cause of concern, not the absolute number of cases. But the media loves the numbers that they can sell - the larger the better.

Well that article was posted by The Weather Channel, so it should be no surprise that they would post an article wondering about the role of weather in the spread of the disease. After all, weather plays a key role for flu season and many other diseases, so this is not unprecedented. And also note that the very title of the article openly stated that scientists are conflicted by the idea. I don't know if is it is or not, but I think it would be very foolish to discount the idea completely, too. Science is about looking at all the factors.

The weather.com article does not present a true picture of the impact of weather. For one, the impact of low temperatures on tropical climate is much more severe than low temperature in cold countries. Winters at northern India are short but can be severe. Unlike people in most northern countries where people are accustomed to cold climate 9 months of a year, the citizens here are more vulnerable to cold related ailments due to sudden fluctuations in climate conditions when most of the year our bodies are tuned to deal with the heat and humidity of a tropical and temperate climate.

A per 1 million doesn't tell the whole story, either. With all of this talk about Australia, they only have 249 reported cases there. While the per million is kind of high, the actual number of cases is still quite low. Consider this, if a single large family all test positive, that would be enough to cause a spike in the percentage because of how low the total population is, skewing the results. And perhaps the biggest factor of all is how the virus is being tested and confirmed. The more proactive in testing, the more positive results they may get.

Speaking of Australia, their temperatures in February were much higher that what we had in New Delhi during that period [1][2][3]. So if temperature was a factor then they were clearly at an advantage. Check your facts first and don't just blindly believe in whatever is presented in the name of scientific research on the internet.

    [1]https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/india/new-delhi/historic?month=2&year=2020
    [2]https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/australia/sydney/historic?month=2&year=2020
    [3]https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/australia/canberra/historic?month=2&year=2020

Just to be clear - my intention here is not trying to criticize how any nation is dealing with the crisis but criticizing the article published by weather.com.

There are universal metrics to measure social welfare, healthcare, education many of which are indicated as 'per capita' or per 1000 population. All these metrics are devised to accomodate minor fluctuations. You can't drastically change the healthcare metrics by just adding a few more beds in some hospital. The 'per million' criteria in this case is a large enough base to accomodate the diverse spectrum - from the least affected to most affected countries within resonable numerical values. We should be glad that we are not talking about per 1000 ... yet.

Speaking about comparing large families, you should do more research on the joint family system prevalent in India. And how can you even comment on the effectiveness on testing and confirmation? We are talking about a contagious disease that does not await any doctors confirmation or lab results before it spreads and claims its victims (in many cases even fatally). If the testing/detection ineffectiveness was anything close to real we would have all seen the consequences.

Clearly, India has something going for it, but I think its also highly presumptive to also assume that India just does it better than everybody else in the world. It could be that cases are not properly reported...

Indian government has always been transparent with its approach and there has not been any 3rd party reports which suggest different numbers. Even WHO has acknowledged these numbers in their own independent situation reports.  "The concern about unreported cases can be applied to any country who cannot test and certify each and every one of its citizens for the virus."

The government of the Czech Republic is going to discuss placing the whole country in quarantine today afternoon. This will include some sort of curfews and serious punishments for any violations.

Don't panic, but don't assist the spreading of the virus by hand-waving it as a "mere flu" or thinking you don't need to follow the strict rules, because you know better. Please.

So I haven't been out of the house since Tuesday. It's been pouring rain here for the last few days but finally sort of cleared up today so I can at least go for a walk. I live alone with my cat. I'm usually very social in the evenings, and go to events/receptions with complementary food and drinks so my food bills have gone up and I haven't seen a human being in person since Tuesday. My cat loves having me all to himself. We have long conversations. I should probably rename him Wilson...

...just don't put a red hand print on him.

I have no choice but to go out now and then as I cannot carry much home from the market in one trip since I don't own a vehicle. Fresh veggies and fruits also don't store for long periods of time so "stocking up" on those pretty much ends in waste.. Veggies that are frozen or in tins lack a lot of their beneficial nutrients which are important to stay healthy during a situation like this. Fortunately as I have mentioned the market isn't very far away and they have an online site so I can prepare a list on my phone before I leave to minimise my time spent there.

I have no choice but to go out as I have to work and being self employed if I don't work I don't get paid, I wish I could limit my exposure but unfortunately its really not possible.

That link has nothing to do with Google or the CDC.  It's the WHO website, and it's been there for ages.

The website the WH talked about was developed in collaboration between Google and the state of California, and will initially only be for the Bay Area.  The U.S. government had nothing to do with that either.

Yeah, I read that the other day... $70 for a dollar bottle of sanitizer and he's the victim... or depending on the narrative "just redirecting the flow of goods"... yeah , in the meantime his 80 year old neighbor on a fixed income can't find supplies or afford them.

    ...same here.

Made a quick run to the market down the street and actually bought several tins of a local made chili as they were on sale and there were still some left on the shelf.  Got a big pack of corn tortillas to have with it.  Fortunately a lot of items happened to be on sale, so I managed to pick up several packs of cheese, a big carton of rolled oats (still have some left tom the previous one), a loaf of decent bread (not that white spongy rubbish that even wihth my arthritic hands I can squish into a 3" by 3" cube) and a jar of natural PB, so brekkies, lunches, and dinners are pretty much covered.for most of the month (and real cheesy mac, not that orange powder stuff) Yeah, nothing fancy (well save for a couple  nights of homemade curry I cooked up last night which I put up in the freezer - those will be my Sunday dinners) but it will least and keep me well fed.

Fortunately I loaded up on TP on my last market trip (I always buy a large pack) and have enough paper towels for a while.

Can you make bread yourself, or tea buns.... if so that is a nice alternative to shop bread.

..nah don't have the pans for it. Also unable to knead dough well with my arthritic hands so I would have to go out and buy an expensive appliance (eg. bread maker) for that and then find some place to put them when not in use as I have so little kitchen storage space where I live.  I even had to give up making my own pasta as the counters aren't big enough to roll the dough out on. Think of a motel room with a tiny kitchenette added on.

Try to get a copy of the Good Eats episode Use Your Noodle 2.  Alton brown used a fold up ironing board with a hand operated pasta machine mounted on it to make home made pasta for Ravioli and Tortellini.  When you are done, you can stick the ironing board in a closet.

Went on our normal Sunday shopping run today and no toilet paper and no bread.  Walmart was limiting to 2 gallons of water.  Other things we needed were hit or miss,  I had to settle for sharp Cheddar cheese because they were out of extra sharp CHeddar.  Most of the sandwich meat section and bacon shelves were empty at Walmart and while the Pasta sauce shelves were empty, someone was ready to restock woth several cases of Ragu sauces.  No pasta though on the pasta isle.  Did find some Mac & Cheese and grabbed a few boxes just in case.  Plenty of milk and eggs but no egg beaters.  Went by HEB for a few specific things and to try to get bread, Egg Beaters, and TP and same story, no TP and no toilet paper.  Did get my low sodium HEB wavy chips but they were out of small containers of their store brand of Mustard Potato Salad we like.  Down to 1 & 1/2 cartons, only enough for two or three meals.  Oh the agony, THE AGONY!  Had everything else we needed but small quantities of most things as all the stores have been picked over pretty well.

I really wish this Chicken Little sh.. uh stuff would stop but it just proves the point made by K "A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it."

There were Puffs and Kleenex left at the Walmart, but no toilet paper, so I saw folks grabbing those. I had already bought stuff Thursday, shopped at Walmart at 1am in the morning to avoid people. Had to go today at 6am though, to get kitty litter and more cat food, as Walmart is now 6am to 11pm. Seriously, did they not stop to think that by shortening the hours, they were forcing more people together? You're more than likely to get this from another PERSON than a store shelf. I mean, when was the last time you actually touched the metal shelf? It isn't that easy. You grab a can of soup, you don't touch the shelf, you grab the can midway up. ETC. But NO, let's shorten the hours so more people can get jammed packed into the aisles.

And the Walmart didn't have any of the hand santizing wipes left at the front of the store, they did Thursday. I had my Purell with me in my purse though.

PS,  WE'RE SAVED, WE'RE SAVED.  Wife found a 12 roll package of Scott 1000 sheet rolls in a box (we are still unpacking from our move 2 weeks ago), so with the 7 & a half rolls we already knew about, we're good for two people for a while.  No news print for me for awhile yet.  Have plenty of rubbing alcohol and will grab a pint of everclear for ememrgencies if the rubbing alcohol doesn't show up in stores soon.  Also bought our 90 day supply of needed vitamins the first of the month before the panic sset in so we are good there too.

Yep, and Everclear burns with a pretty blue flame, 95% alcohol is VERY flamable.  Too bad we can't get Bacadri 151 Rum any more.  Made GREAT Rum & Cokes  I can't even find Navy Strength Gin (114 proof, 57% alcohol) anywhere any more.  You haven't had a Martini until you've had one with a good Navy Strenth Gin.  Especially if it is dirty (a little olive brine in it to dirty it up).  With 151 rum and Navy Strength Gin we could disinfect our insides as well as our outsides.  Just DON'T smoke smiley

I don't work for Walmart, but my company is comparible and we plan to do the same thing. I can tell you first hand that every truck we have coming in is short on product, including products we need to run the business like the precious sanitizing wipes at the front (know how many custimers have been stealing those?) and that will only get worse as more people get sick. I have 347 employees, many at min wage having to deal with angry and self entitled customers all day long and basically putting their life on the line so someone can stock up on toilet paper and hand sanitizer. It's a fact that customers that are sick will only think of their own needs first and venture out into public and into the store and make others sick, it's human nature.

God I love retail, can't wait till we finally get to close because of this.

It's worth remembering that many retail employees of these retail employees have families and children who are out of school and need looking after.  The others are picking up the slack, and if they burn themselves out, there won't be anyone to keep stores open at all.  The only jobs worse than retail right now are in healthcare.

This is the worst time in history since WWII. I never thought something like this would happen in my lifetime.
