For the HD morphs vs Normal Maps debate, I like having the option to choose which works best for my scene.

As for Abasi, he is my favorite from the bundle and addon characters. Here he is proving he has rhythm and grace.

Abasi has a hot body... And  a very highly defined wrinkled face, which seems incongruous ous to me. But, that body is amazing. He's wearing Ceejay Hair.   If I had my druthers, I'd probably de-age him a little in the head region. He comes with body and beard hair options.

Hi Serene. It's always a compromise with a HD character as opposed to an add-on. He comes with both normal maps and HD details to cater to those who prefer to be able to use the character at lower res and also those who prefer HD.

If you up the subd levels, I'd suggest dialling back the normal maps, as the effects start to double up. G8's face UV maps are also larger than the body, so this doubling up of detail tends to be most apparent in the face. :)

so are you saying the HD add is not really necessary to achiev the great HD look?

The normal maps mimic the HD features. They will never fully match the quality of high res detail for close-up rendering IMO. But if it's a big scene and the character isn't close-up in camera, subd level 1 with normal maps is perfectly adequate. I wouldn't dial out the HD detailing even at lower resolution though. It still adds some details. Also some softer lighting doesn't show the skin details well, so sometimes having the option of both HD and normal maps is desirable.

Why do they have the HD then? Is that for folk that buy interactive licenses so they can export the HD version to their game engines? The HD is going to slow down the viewport while the normal won't (unmless you do iRay preview).

    You cannot export HD.

Any idea of the hair on the Abasi character https://www.daz3d.com/abasi-hd-for-ashan-8 ( the mohawk in promo 1 and 2) dont think its  Dolb as too smooth  any ideas ?

It's a 'coming soon' hair called Sitric hair. Apologies, I thought it would be in the store before Ashan 8.

@Redz Looks great! Does Sitric Hair have a Female fit?

  • As for the HD and normals thing, you can turn the subd down while you're setting up and restore the subd to 3 or 4 or whatever it is supposed to be for the final render (it's got 2 options, one is for render subd, generally higher than viewport subd).

I do personally set up normal map to match /add to HD, for people who can't or don't want the HD or render at lower resolution. As someone working with a 10 year old computer, I get it. sculpting for me and using HD means everything is a bit slower, but i do like the rendered results. Normals can approximate similar light reaction and fake the displacement but it's not as detailed as HD for some things. That said, a very good normal map can achieve a lot.

Usually the opposite I believe. For animated gaming, low poly with normal maps is desirable. For still portrait rendering, HD will always give better quality. As to the viewport, you can easily control the subd for both viewport and render in the parameters tab, so the HD morphs need not slow down anything, except the actual render, at higher than 1 subdivision.

OK, that sounds reasonable. Thanks. Either way doesn't matter to me,  if the Pro Bundle doesn't come with the HD, then I don't buy the HD separately.

Flute isn't a horn, and technically neither is a sax, although the term "horn section" colloquially includes saxes along with brass.

Or, since they're out on the beach, a Sousaphone?

Since you put Lost Boys in the title, and the sax man looks a bit like the sax guy in Lost Boys, I'm guessing you meant it to be a bit of an homage to it?

If so very cool! (But even if not, and it's just a coincidence, the render came out great!)

(EDIT - Oops, I didn't realize that video was a heavily edited video and not the actual scene in it's original form - oh well, you get the reference anyway lol).

yeppers. Haven't seen that movie in years but see the saxman in memes on my facebook often and Ashan's look/build plus the sax just said it to me and got those other intruments so added them. Actually there are a lot of even series of renders done that are easter egged homages either the theme look or titles inspired by songs. lyrics/titles, movie/tv titles or quotes some slightly altered or sounding/ryming similar to and some obscure referances

Agreed! And cheap, too, being a PC+ item. Tempted to buy today but might wait until Saturday to use the August coupon on a cart of Sachar plus some other items.
