@Kyoto: Best of luck with your next interview! :cheese:

Unix/Linux is written almost entirely in C. The C language has been implemented on almost every computer known to Man, thus making Unix/Linux extremely portable as very little machine-specific code is required in most cases.

C is also a very concise language and produces compact, optimized code - C++ typically generates larger code
AND the language "does things for you" under the hood, removing control of everything from the programmer.

I code in C 80% of the time, then it's C++ and C#, a touch of Java, and yes - low level assembly language (VERY machine-specific).

    Lecture over... :red:

...thank you. Both the interview and assessment went very well. The hours, and as I mentioned, the commute are much better than the west side site. If Thy hire me, I'll b in for 6 weeks paid training. Should know later today.

This was the reason I was AWOL from the forums yesterday.

As I had time on my transit ticket (just got a day ticket) and was in the neighbourhood, took a side trip to the airport on the new tram line to do a bit of plane watching. Pretty disappointing compared to the "old days". No more of the "big jets" I remember like 707s, 720s, 727s, DC-8s, 757s, 767s etc. With all the downsizing airlines are doing these days most flights in and out of here are now on turboprops or what I call "toy jetliners" (those "micro" commuter jets) which make even an old DC-9 series 10 or 737-100 look like a "jumbo jet" in comparison. The most exciting events all afternoon were a formation of F-15s from the local air reserve which took off for routine patrol (afterburners lit) and a FedEx MD-11 (basically a cargo version of the DC-10) that landed. Sad, considering Portland used to be a bustling "International" airport.

Interesting that Linux is written in C and not assembly/machine code.

Oh, I hope you get the job, KK! It sounds like it would be perfect for you.

I want to make a 3d movie like pixar but on a smaller budget. I have wanted to make an animated movie in a long time. Maybe for about two decades. What software do I need in order to make a 3d movie?

Software isn't going to be the limiting factor, time (to get it assembled) and hardware (to render it out this century) are going to be far larger factors, assuming you have the essential skills.

Furrry (at least I hope it looks like fur)
I still can't get the Royal Dragon fur to load in, so I decided to break down and attempt to make my own fur.

    Looks furry to me! Interesting.

Lighgtwave has a fast renderer, but you're right.. its all about pre-production, scripting, storyboards. My ratio for Vicky's Diner render to scripting is about 10/200

Every step you save in pre-production saves tenfold in production :long: :long:

Not like I know anything, being more an ambient musician than a 3D artist.. :red: :red:

Software isn't going to be the limiting factor, time (to get it assembled) and hardware (to render it out this century) are going to be far larger factors, assuming you have the essential skills.

You already have all the software you need, Poser, Studio ZBrush etc and you can use Blender to composite what you need to. There are a multitude of effective free/cheap editing programs around see
    http://www.techradar.com/au/news/software/applications/best-free-video-editing-software-9-top-programs-you-should-download-1136264

but the big issue is time, around 3 to 5 minutes a year seems the average for one person 3D animatedmovie making.

Mechinima is a quicker path to producing animated shorts where you use a platform like Second Life to get the animation happening, record that with a screen grabber like FRAPS and compile the video grabs into movies. There are many Second Life sims that allow you to use the virtual world in your own productions

see here for general tips about producing mechinima

and Torley's quick guide to mechanimation here

    http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Movie_help

You need a good connection to Second Life Servers as well

Hey great thanks for sharing, it sounds real spacey and symphonic all at once, as if a black sun was on the rise somewhere just out of sight :)

100 year anniversary of the WWI De Havilland Farman Experimental 2 pusher biplane. It didn't have any cockpit armour for pilots and was worse for observers who stood out of the fuselage on the sides of the nacelle to operate the rearward facing armament (Took hours to remap and retopo the model as far as I did) They didn't carry parachutes in those days :)

Flat out of content money here.. And since I missed a day of work last week, probably little to none this coming Friday.

Classroom interiors are needed *eventually* but not right now, so I'll go hit Rendo and wishlist some goodies.

Lighting in DS is my nemesis! 1/2 the time it works the way I think, the other 1/2.. off into SPACE TUNA-land. :blank:

3 second animation took 30 minutes to render nd came out horribly wrong. Will try later, but the DS 4.6 timeline, while simple, at least makes sense. :blank:
