I was wondering if you were involved in the development! Thank you for the video. :D

Really, what was the rush?  I have no idea what you are doing, Is there another video that explains what this thing is doing?

Yeah, simple question? where is it located? The path you use has no face control installed for me.

If you have installed the latest Starter Essentials, you can find the controls in:

    "...\People\Genesis 8 Female\Developer Kit\Genesis 8.1 Female Face Controls.duf"

The path I originally placed it was the same path as the Genesis 8 Face Controls except of course you had to go to Genesis 8.1 instead. It appears to have been changed to: Developer Kit\Genesis 8.1 Female Face Controls.duf

Nonetheless the "Genesis 8.1 Female Face Controls.duf" file can be moved anywhere else. Locate it in your file explorer, copy the duf file, then go to a folder of your choice and paste it there.

Another thing to note is that if you want to load the Genesis Face Controls (the one previously released, with the red controls) on Genesis 8.1 just follow the same steps: have Genesis 8.1 figure selected in the scene then double click on the Genesis Face Controls duf file.

Have a look at this video showing off the Genesis Face Controls tool (which is compatible with Genesis 3, 8, and 8.1):

The Genesis 8.1 Face Controls in practice does the same thing except it uses the new FACS-based facial morphs of the 8.1 figure.

I can get the face controls to show up but as soon as I try to use any of them Daz just crashes,  This happens everytime.  The slider controls work fine tho.

I tried applying it but moving the controls only literally moved the control, not the surface. A few handles worked, the eyes specifically, but the rest either did not respond or actually translated/rotated the control overlay. Crashed after a min as well, although it has the same basic crash issue 4.14+ seems to have, Access issues.

    DAZStudio.exe caused ACCESS_VIOLATION in module "C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\dzcore.dll" at 0033:000000004B17334A, DzIK::handleSceneLoaded()+24314 byte(s)

Thanks. I think they've been improved since the ones I bought a couple weeks back.

Are you still working on the 'full body controls'? Will that be a Genesis 8.2? Will it be an independent product from you that DAZ buys out as well?

That's a fun gizmo. So far only crashed D/S once. However there seems to be NO way to save anything. Pose presets will only save a major bone motion ... which may work only one, maybe not at all. Shaping presets do nothing. Animation presets - same as pose presets ... only saving major bone motion. Face totally blank.

So I figured to come on back to the forums and ask, okay, how do you save these expressions??!! tia

Hopefully, someone will make an update for the use of G8 expressions. This really pisses me off because I have a ton of expressions and really can't be bothered with that gizmo

  • SevrinSevrin Posts: 6,307

What made them think putting this in the Development Kit was a good idea?  That's the last place you'd look for anything for a general purpose character.

  • Because it's probably intended for people who animate.

Yeah its irritating cause they removed some of the morphs for them to be functional and then renamed some of them also.  I don't really understand the purpose to be honest.  Like brow squeeze? Why remove it peoples brows do pull together with certain expressions.

Do not click and drag. Use the Universal Tool. Click on a controller, then translate it in the direction of the face controller's arrow.

The Face Controls (including the previous red one) is a standalone figure that attaches itself to the Genesis figure. In order to save an expression (a pose) you need to save it for the Face Controls. So create the expression you want, select the Genesis Face Controls in the scene, then go to File -> Save As -> Pose Preset. This new pose will only work when loaded on the Face Controls.

However if you still want to save the facial expression as a pose for the Genesis figure simply create an expression with the Face Controls then delete Face Controls from the scene. The changes made with the Face Controls will be transfered to the Genesis figure. Then you can follow the same steps for Genesis as previously mentioned: File -> Save As -> Pose Preset.

I'm unable to replicate this issue so I don't really know what's causing it.

Here's something you could try: load the Genesis 8.1 Face Controls first -> then load Genesis 8.1 in the scene -> parent the Face Controls to the Genesis figure -> save the scene -> close the scene -> load the scene.  Does the crash still happen?

Also, if you could, please check to see if the Face Controls still crash Studio when you load it in the scene alone.

I was messing about using the controls last night, and tried exactly as you described before seeing this post just now, and it didn't work. The figures would stay blank. Saving a pose preset for the Face Control itself does work as described though.

Still working on the body controls, here are some tests:

Daz Studio has this feature of being able to create and delete IK chain instantly. I believe this holds immense potential in animation as it completely eliminates the need for IK rigging.

I'm also still working on a muscle rig and if that gets released it's going to be a standalone figure. It's premature at this point for me to say if it's going to get integrated into Genesis 9 or not, or if it's going to be a separate independent figure, or both.

Ok, I've managed to get it to work without crashing,  For those that are having a simular problem then this is what I did to solve it.

    1. Uninstall Genesis 8 Female Starter Essentials, Genesis 8 Male Starter Essentials, PowerPose for G8 Female, PowerPose for G8 Male

    2. Re-download & Re-Install all of the above

It seems that when you delete the Face Controls the changes only look like they got transferred. When I reloaded the scene the Genesis figure was zero'd, which means that the changed parameters are so because Studio somehow still believes the Face Controls are in the scene. There's still a workaround to this. Create the desired expression with the Face Controls -> select Genesis in the scene -> Parameters Tab -> Currently Used -> click the little chain icon on every parameter used (after you click it the chain should look broken) -> then Save As  -> Pose Preset. Now this expression (pose) will work directly on the Genesis figure. If you decide to save the scene and use the Face Controls again don't forget to re-click the chain icon back to its original state then zero the figure (or at least zero the previously modified parameters).

I animate and it's useless to me

I wouldn't really know though as it crashes if I try and use it anyway blush
and mimic and lipsync  doesn't work because the phonemes are missing

I made a crappy mouthflap configuration.dmc myself but it not realistic

  • Genesis 8.1 expressions is basically Face Control for G8 (which I bought); apparent differences G8.1 expressions has slightly different control shapes in blue and doesn't do sides independent even when selected, Face Control doesn't have combined left & right controls widget also doesn't work with Genesis 8 HD.  Really think buy Face Control for Genesis 8 was a waste of money and figure the 8.1 versions of character would be a bigger one. Very disappointed.

The Genesis Face Controls is compatible with Genesis 3, Genesis, 8, and Genesis 8.1.

As the description of the video I posted says:

Genesis 8.1 comes with a new set of facial movements and expressions based on FACS. This tool is a GUI meant to help the user create their own custom expressions using the new native FACS-based movements. It works very similar to the previously released Genesis 3+8 Face Controls. The two facial control panels can be used separately or together on the same Genesis 8.1 figure.

I did all that last night. Took me over an hour of hoop-jumping - mainly because Install Manager refuses to see Genesis 8 male and female starter essentials, even if I go directly do them in my product page or not. What a mess. In the end I uninstalled everything from Install Manger and then reinstalled and installed the Starter Essentials manually (didn't have much of a choice on that one). THEN everything showed up in DS and everything worked. A real cluster****
