So now, GreatUncleBear is a: 12 year old HP Pavilion tower case, with a new(ish) EVGA 500w power supply, Asus: Prime-A320M-K motherboard,  AMD Ryzen5-1400 CPU, using 32GB of Corsair Vengeance-LPX-2666 RAM.  The boot drive is a 500GB Crucial: MX500 SSD, backup drive is a 500GB Seagate hard drive, and since the CPU has no graphics features, I'm using an MSI: GT-730 graphics card with HDMI, DVI, and VGA outputs.

GreatUncleBear is now a screamin' machine compared to what it was before the upgrade.yes  And I didn't even have to tinker with the operating system that already existed.

...interesting I had an HP Pavilion on my desk at my old job.  OK for the day and the tasks I needed to perform . IT pretty much beefed it up as much as possible as I was also running the order transmission and processing software for the company's primary client along with all the automated processes I developed to track operations for billing.

...well there's the problem, it was routed thorugh Newark.  I never connect through Newak, only JFK.

Of course the way routes through transfer hubs are set up these days it could have been Atlanta, Dallas, or Chicago..

My phone company wouldn't help when my watch had an algae problem either, and apparently if you put snails in your watch Timex won't honor the warranty anymore.

    lol!  So funny!

...oh, on the topic of souping up computers. have been spending the last several weeks running through different configurations to bring my main work and rendering system "Big Sister" into the present day in preparation for moving to W11. Originally was considering a Ryzen 9 5900x, however every motherboard I chose got a flag on PC Part Picker that the BIOS would need updating, Given that the 5900X ahs been out for a while seems odd the baord manufacutrers haven't updated the BIOs already. That is not something I really care to do as acidentally pressing a wrong key (which with my stiff clumsy arthritic hands is entirely possible) it could be brick city for h the MB.  Another factor was that I needed some sort of adapter (not supplied with either the cooler or CPU), even though the board has an AM4 socket.

So turned back to Intel which means scaling back a little in cores/threads to 10/20 instead of 12/24. (for Carrara and 3DL the more the merrier).  As this is also to be an "upgrade" looking for better performance than what I currently have.  The goal is to keep the hardware portion under 1,000$ as I also need to purchase a retail version of 11 Pro (the Home Edition requires having a Microsoft Account, thank you, no)..

OK that said this is pretty much what I have settled on for now.

    • CPU: Intel Core i9-10900KF 3.7 GHz/5.3 GHz Turbo 10-Core Processor
    • CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S 82.52 CFM CPU Cooler
    • Motherboard: Asus PRIME H570-PLUS ATX LGA1200 Motherboard
    • Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws V 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR4-2666 CL18 Memory
    • Storage: Samsung 980 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive PCIe 3.0

    Total 938$

If I went to an i7 11700KF 3.6 GHz/5.2 GHz Turbo 8-Core CPU tt would save 108$. but overall 4 fewer cores than the original 5900X build

While the  board has 4 DIMM slots only populating two for future upgrading to 128 GB when i can afford and need it (like if I down the road I can get my hands on a 3090 or A5000).

The interesting component is the CPU cooler as it alone is a beast with dual tower heatsinks, and dual fans which weighs in at around 2.5 #.  Not into closed loop liwquid systems even though it would be more compact as 1. they are more expensive, 2. require more maintenance, and 3. I'd have to sacrifice the two top case vent fans for the cooler's radiator.  The Noctura D15 is rated up to 205 w TDP  (the i9 10900 at full turbo can draw up to 224 w).  Did some measurements and it will just barely fit in the existing case. (unit pictured below).

I think soft pastels or simple crayons will work, too.

I called my phone company to ask a question about my watch.  They said they will call back if I let them.  Later I called Petsmart about snails, but right as I got someone to talk about snails, my phone company called.  I still need to call petsmart to see if they have nerite snails.  I think mystery snails are too mysterious.  I want some nerite snails to eat the algae.

It might be interesting to call your phone company to talk about your snails.enlightened

There some miscommunication.  I called my phone company to deal with the watch they sold me.  While waiting for their response, I was calling a pet store to see if they had nerite snails for my algae problem in my aquarium.

There is no algae in my watch.  The algae is on the aquarium wall.

I don't see any Dream Home products in Daz Install Manager.  I guess I need to download the zip files from my account section and install the product manually.  In other news I can install Reby now.

I thought I could have access to the files of the Reby Sky reference DVD, but it's not loading.

Wait... you have an aquarium watch phone?... I just had algae on my watch because I'm really sweaty... I have no idea where I picked up the snails... probably the same place I picked up that damn octopus...

From my own experience, if you get snails in your aquarium then you will end up with more snails in the tank than you would want. And then you have to get clown loaches to eat the snails. And if the loaches eat all the snails then you have to get food to feed the clown loaches. As an alternative, you could get a plecostomus to eat the algae. But if it eats all the algae, then you have to buy algae to feed the fish you got to get rid of the algae.

Updating a BIOS can be dangerous, but nowdays most higher quality motherboards have an fail-safe mechanism built into the boards that can be used to prevent disaster if your power or Internet or other mishap should occur.  Either a way to restore the original BIOS from an on-board copy, or a way to install a new BIOS from a USB or live from the Internet without even a CPU in the socket.  Different manufacturers have different techniques, so read up on the features of the boards you're interested in.

My Asus: "TUF-Gaming B450M-Plus II" in MommaBear has it and that's not very far up the quality scale, so you don't necessarily need the top-of-the-line boards.

    Maybe it's an iOS/Mac thing...

When I get home I'll check with windows and different browsers.

I lost my android phone.  Oh wait I have another android phone, but I think I lost that too!

my PayPal account is on hold because I owe them about 71 cents.  Because this hold, they can't use a refund of $10.71 until that 71 cents is paid.

Yeah, I made a dedicated content library for it to get some sense into what's where and why.

Complaint for the day...... I had to get new tires for my truck installed today. I showed up at the shop at opening and ended up not leaving until 3.5 hours later. Aparently they had a bunch of cars from yesterday they didn't finish and they came first. Nice of them to mention that when I checked in. I wanted to get an oil change while I was there but of course, my luck strikes again, out of the filter my truck takes, so I'll have to come back tomorrow. After which, I had to go to my dream store, Home Depot and buy the new duct work for my new dryer. After wondering around there for an hour having a hard time finding everything, I finally bit the bullet and asked (hey, I'm a guy, we don't need to ask for direction and help, we already know it all). After that I had to go to Walmart and pick up my meds but when I get back to the pharmacy there is a line of ten people standing there while the girl behind the counter is moving slower than a snail. Took me a half hour of standing there before they got to me and they couldn't find my Tralicity in the frig which is only the size of one of those very small apartment frig's. You know it will only hold a couple gallons of ice cream in the freezer. Another 20 minutes go by with everyone behind me himming and hawing and complaining that I was taking so long. It finally took the pharmacist doing it to find it. By the time I got home it was almost 1:00 EST. So 6 hours with a terribly bad back, I almost collapsed when I walked in the door I hurt so bad.

Well, I fixed my banner... took forever to find the old artwork.

I need to upload new stuff to my ShareCG collection... and then do a newer banner.

Whatever broke my banner, broke Chohole's banner too... clicking her Bryce banner takes you to the terrible front page "Non Fungable People" ad...  **Barf**

....the MB I specified isn't top end either  I'm already dumping nearly half my budget on the CPU so a high priced MB is out of the question.  Actually, the i9 10900 is a bit less expensive than the Ryzen 59900X and both offer dual channel memory support (only Xeons and Threadrippers now offer 4 or more memory channels). If I go with the i7 10700 it will save me a bit more, just that I'll be down a few threads from where I'd like to be for other operations..

Not included in the cost is a copy of Windows 11 Pro Edition, Home Edition requires having an MS Account...no thanks.  Also Pro lets me ignore "fluff" updates for up to 2 years). Moving on from W7, makes me feel like leaving and old simple but dependable car behind for one that comes standard with all the options, gizmos, gadgets & such I don't need or want because that's the way they all come today.
