No, and I don't think it's a resp[onse to the feedback at all - just offering a comment to those interested in a tool to chnage the font out who use Chrome.
Thankyou. I shall install it when my sysadmin permits. So, never. All browser addons, no exclusions, are explicitly banned as data security risks.
Regards,
Richard.
Roboto is a FAR better type. It was specifically created to be readable, especially on devices of all kinds.
Look, if I was DAZ, and say I was interested in listening to users, even a few complaints should spark action, am I not correct here in saying that?
I should not have to download all kinds of extensions or settings just to have a ledgeable experience.
I feel your pain... for me, over the years the issues I've had with Safari and the forums have been pretty damn frustrating... it's been way over a year since I've been able to upload an image using Safari iOS... I either have to use Firefox or do it through my laptop or computer.
So... having said that, and not to disagree with anything you said...
Over the years DAZ has pretty much made it clear that the forums only represent a small portion of DAZ users and customers... maybe like 10% or something... so basically the forums are (more or less in their cumulative words) "not representative" of the majority of DAZ customers and not a something for them to base any decisions on... presumably that's done by a team of people (or sentient tomatoes) which they pay some sort of money to, who crunch numbers, follow trends, analyse data and possibly embark on deep metaphysical out of body spirit journeys the results of which are chronicled and then turned over to someone who processes that information to develop whatever decisions are made in regards to the forum and store workings.
Probably.
But first and foremost in that equation is that the forums aren't really that important because it's just a small portion of the user base.
I've always felt this veiw of the forums being more of an indulgence or a luxury is a bit of a lack of insight by those who make the final decisions (and definitely not those charged with keeping things running) and it really undervalues the role the forums play... yeah, it's full of extrenuous nonsense and frivolous banter, but the majority of it plays a frontline role in problem solving that you just aren't going to get with any ticket based customer service, unless you are willing to spends rail cars full of cash on that... not to mention the fact that the forums build community that keeps people coming back... especially for individuals who live in places where creativity and such is not something you can easily share or talk about.
But regardless of that, we who frequent these forums are not privy to the inner workings or reasoning behind what we see... I'm sure the techs and IT folks who keep the forums (and the store) running would be happy to transform the forums (and presumably the store too) into something we'd all enjoy more, but I don't really think they've been allotted the resources to do more than keep the place running... and you get the feeling that involves a lot of bandaids and bubble gum (forget duct tape, that's too expensive)...
If I were DAZ I'd be interested in user input... well, useful input... a lot of stuff isn't implementable or even sane, but the important stuff, I'd definitely want to know about and look into... but it's pretty much been said over and over, in one way or another... "it is what it is" and if it ain't on fire, just deal with it or find a work around.
So not to detract from the original point that was being made... if there was a technical or monetary reason for this font change, we are all going to have get used to it because it ain't gonna change at all.
I'm just happy I can even still visit the site... there have been a bunch of times since 2013 when the site has been almost useless to me for months due to the amount of logouts and crashes and clownflares that would happen continuously, to the point where it was genuinely mentally painful to bother to visit.
I have heard the "10% of customers use the forums" claim in the past, but I think you will agree that 100% of forum users are represented here, in the, um-m, forums.
But others apparently find the new text style perfectly legible and prefer it to the original. The feedback has been mixed, this isn't a case of everyonme saying "ugh, make the nasty fiont go away" so the correct path is not clear.
What was this font designed for? Because it wasn't designed for my monitor. Give us a poll, and find out what people really think of it.
I have a regular size monitor (nothing too large/huge), and I like to blow up websites to over 100% scale.
So this wide-spaced font is extra wide on an over-100% scale wide-screen monitor. It's okay in small blocks, but absolutely distracting over the size of a short sentence.
I'm not sure it helps (other than to allow people to criticize my declining eyesight and enjoyment of over 100%-scale web pages).
If you look at this image, it's going to be rescaled to your screen width.
That "reading comfort" is largely a personal opinion, anyway.
I'm not 15-years old with 20/20 vision anymore, sadly.
An extension called Font Overwrite does work. I'm using that now :)
Honestly, I'm still not sure why we don't have a dark mode yet. Most websites have it since it's become such common place.
Add me to the 'Ugh!' list. This is very uncomfortable to read .
I am on several other forums, one of which has multiple user selectable skins to make a more comfortable user experience. The skins have different fonts, colours etc. A couple of the skins have the same colours but use different fonts.
Strangely, that is the planet's most used forum in its specialist field with 98,000 different regular users a week.
I wonder why that is? I wonder if it may be in any way related to making as many of the forum users as possible comfortable, instead of taking the deeply old fashioned 'Like it or lump it approach'? No, can't possibly be that...
Look, if this was just a design choice like a color, I would agree. Everyone have their own likes and preferences.I am a guest in DAZ forums, and whatever the proprietor wants to do, fine.
But when it comes to accessability of which ledgeability is a part, you can't compromise on that. I have been a maintainer of websites for many years, and if our feedback just shows one person having trouble accessing the site, I start looking for solutions. Anything other is just bad for business.
For me it's not about being the font "nasty" or "ugly" or even being "right" here.
It comes down to the objective analysis that it is bad as a body font. I hope you read that review I posted of why that is so. Keep Poppins as a headline font! It's great for that.
So I really strongly have to disagree with the correct path not being clear. If we make a Venn diagram of perfectly adequate body fonts, there are a lot of them. Roboto, Arial, PT Sans / Open Sans, Akkurat (this one could be good as a substitute!) ,Fago and a fav of mine is Plantin.
So you see, it's not that we are starved for alternatives either.

And if you needed another example of why this font is the wrong choice - see what it does to names that used to fit before.
Like others I can't install plugins on my work laptop and that is where I do most of my shopping and check the forums for reviews on items, so I am not coming here as often since this.
This isn't about a style choice it is about Accessability. Daz need a readable font and a non-white forum colour that doesn't hurt the eyes.
I don't think the legibility is the issue here (couldn't find the meaning of 'ledgeable' though), but its definitely more effort required for the eye to process full sentences especially paragraphs of text. The increased font-width also pushes the line length so lines wrap unnecessarily more and combined with the additional line spacing aggravates the vertical spacing further. So not just extra eye movement, but extra scrolling required too. This might have been aceptable in banners and flyouts where a small amount of text is expected to capture the users attention briefly by standing out from regular text in the background, but I find it unacceptable when used in regular text. May be, articles or blogs in websites uses such strategies to inflate the perception of volume of information presented to the occasional reader, but I do not see how such strategies could benefit these forums, unless someone is aspiring to amplify the effect of multiple short mutually validating posts (which i find in abundance here) and avert users from reading long critical posts*. Given that this is a matter of aesthetics so different folks would have different preferences in this matter, and for some, it even may even be cause for such inconvenience that they have to seek recourse. But the font itself stands out from the regular conventions used in other forums or discussion mediums.
I don't think I have to explain this issue to the mods who have to screen through every post as part of their job. How much/whether they have a say in this matter is another matter of course.
*If you have managed to skip reading this entire wall of text so far, then my point is made.
Same.
I definitely find the new font harder to read, and that it actually requires an effort to be able to focus on it enough to get the content out of it. Long posts, forget it, I can't read it. It's literally a wall of text to me now.
That's all fine, but they should save it for just the mobile site. I am one who experiences the internet entirely from a computer and never on my phone. And on the computer, that font is hard to read. My eyes can only follow it in jerky movements, which feels unnatural and uncormfortable. I've fixed it on my end, but not everyone wants to install extensions in their browsers just to be able to comfortably read a website. Not that anything will change...
Same. It's blurry to me unless I squint. That only happens with this font on this site.
Same here, there is something wrong with the ratio between height and width, which sort of makes you go back to the beginning of the word once you realize it didn't end where it was supposed to.
So far I haven't found add-on's that would let me override the default one in Yandex.
Bwaha-hahaha. Did you ever do photo-typesetting? There were different systems for decorative headlines (say) vs. long(er) passages of text. My impression of the providers of these services were that they were a lofty bunch, protecting their turf.
I once saw a... film documentary... about Herb Lubalin (Wikipedia link) that... showed how Letraset masters were created with sticky or multi-layer black vinyl or acetate, and you cut the letters out with a knife to get the crisp edges; from there the artwork was used to make master plates or dies.
I was *very surprised* when the first Windows 3.1 printer drivers trumped all of that WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS and CGA-VGA stuff. FWIW, here is a link to "Almost Perfect", a book about how all of that went down.
I wonder if Linotronic output is still around.
When you make a post it really becomes obvious how terrible the new body font is. While actually composing the message in the editor, the text is easy to read. Post it and it turns into a more difficult to read mess. Ugh.
For a company whose flagship product is all about graphics, deliberately choosing and keeping bad design is very puzzling.
Nah, nothing so professional for me, I'm afraid. I remember my workplace had boxes and boxes of those transfer sheets and I remember that I had a bad habit of tearing the letters before they came off the sheet completely. But it was all amateur stuff which is why it took me hours. Thank goodness computers saved the day.
My girlfriend in those days was a graphic designer who would literally cut and paste bits of photographs and artwork. She would also use (real) airbrush techniques. Just before we split-up she was given a big new Mac computer and told to learn the new way of doing it. She was devastated.
It's not really something users can adjust on all devices. I suggest a more optimized forum font designed for reading. This is very difficult to read on my device.
I'll one up the Letraset comment... Try applying them to a compound surface.
I used to have to simulate tampo printing or silkscreened print on a physical model... so say there was a prototype of device housing that was supposed to have instructions printed on it, I'd often have to letter it by hand (as opposed to having custom printed dry transfers made), because it was actually easier to apply individual letters one at a freakin' time instead of a single set of prearranged letters all together.
One at a freakin' time in the tiniest print possible... add 40% difficulty bonus for an eggshell texture on the surface.
And then you'd have to seal it so the whole thing would blend in and have the same sheen.
Fun times.
It was mostly for high end instruments or medical device housings... now nobody does that sort of thing anymore and in most cases a crappy sticker will suffice.
Don't Miss it one bit.
I ended up setting my browser fonts to these:
Just wish I could do the same with the DuckDuckGo browser on my tablet but not the biggest deal as I dont use it to read Daz forums a lot
