My read was that you will be able to use a work facebook account instead of your personal facebook, but it's still facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/business/news/introducing-products-for-the-next-era-of-personalized-experiences
I understand that an account is necessary to buy something, but tracking everywhere you go and everything you do in VR, cross-referencing it with everywhere you go and everything you do on the internet, and selling that information because you bought a headset is not necessary.
I also see the Metaverse and NFTs being closely intertwined going forward.
- Greg
Well, it can if the working of the headset is conditional to you being the owner of the NFT. Or am I missing something? (not a sarcastic question)
I just don't see Facebook being interested in such a system as it would deprive them of data that can be used for advertising. It would be good for users though, as they could sell their headset and the NFT as second hand to someone else.
Yes its the tracking everyone has a problem with, as well as the fact that when facebook went down recently all Quest 2's turned into bricks. If Facebook is serious at all about the metaverse they'll have to become platform independent. I would be happy to use a work account if its not linked to Facebook.
I think Facebook is serious about becoming dominant in the Metaverse, I don't see how they would benefit if it becomes platform independent. I would love to see if it becomes open-source as it would solve a lot of potential issues.
I just realized you made a lot of the stuff in my forum Avatar, how about that :-)
The only way they can become dominant in the metaverse is to be platform independent - and the benefit is that money is made on software, not the headsets :)
Quest is not the only headset. You have Valve Index, HP Reverb, Vive, Rift, Samsung Odyssey and the list grows daily. Right now the only way I can use my index with Oculus VR products in their store is to use Revive and that's not seamless or error free. The industry is moving towards OpenXR so that its easier for VR developers to create software that will work on all headsets, that includes Oculus.

Interesting, thanks for the link.
Hey Mada, you just hit my 'Special' list.![devil devil](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/devil_smile.png)
No, wait, you're already on it... Never mind
Ummm - I hope that's the good special list hahahaha
Some interesting info on the Metavetse from Time Magazine: https://apple.news/A-Kr57hsxSd6lm5IlH31HmA
I dunno why, but VR creeps me out. Too "Surrogates" for me. LOL And then there's the Wall-E reference.![laugh laugh](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/teeth_smile.png)
As far as myself though, I have less-than-zero interest.
I just saw this video and found it interesting. Obviously I am more biased about VR, so my experiences are different, but I can relate to some some of it.
I am really waiting for full body tracking and full body avatars by default
Urgh...Zuckerberg. I can't even stand to see him talk or gesticulate. I always think "Yep, aliens". LOL![laugh laugh](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/teeth_smile.png)
I tried doing a DAZ version of him (Carrara Octane render Genesis 2)

Exactly this. The thought of losing my peripheral vision or not being able to see what's going on around me is just a big NOPE. I've never had any interest in VR whatsoever. None.
And my thoughts immediately went to that lesser-known Bruce Willis movie as well. I love how there were instances where they showed that people were fooled into thinking they were interacting with one person when it was someone else entirely...which is very possible and I'm sure happens all the time.
As if REAL people weren't hard enough to read. LMAO :P
I don't think I've ever seen something so reviled by the customers being so eagerly pursued by the company. It's astounding and mistifying.
Nothing wrong with that if its not for you - the same can be said for reading... its not everyone's cup of tea but everyone is free to pick what they prefer to do, right?
That is actually not an uncommon reaction, I've onboarded a lot of people in VR who struggle with exactly that and why I get super annoyed with people who think its funny to scare someone by tapping them on the shoulders while they're in VR. Stupid!
Passthrough is a recent feature on the Quest where you tap the headset on the side and it will switch to the cameras so you can see what's going on around you, and tap again and you're back in VR.
Thanks for that video, now I know the Metaverse is even worse than I imagined it. We're fifty years away from anything in that vein being taken seriously by the masses. That's not Internet 3.0, it's Second Life 2.0.
I guess you have never visited the NFT forum. It sucks for me that VR is included with the NFTs and crypto in this venture since I would love to see more get into VR, including DAZ, but now it seems users are associating VR with NFTs and crypto, oh well.
I would avoid a metaverse like that like the plague too.... but that is certainly not what I'm experiencing - everyone can tell a story to support the facts that they want to be true (including me). However my opinion is shaped by the people I'm meeting in VR and the metaverse - not by what other people are telling me what they think the metaverse is or want it to be.
Here's links to more valuable uses than the video is showing above

That forum seems dead?
I get that VR is no substitute for real life, but everyone has different needs and handicaps. For example what about old age homes where people are confined to 4 walls until someone is ready to take them out? Should they sit and stare at a blank wall like they do now? Why would it be bad to put them in a headset to look at a beautiful vista, somewhere they would never be able to go back to but can now enjoy for a while and revisit good memories. One look at the smile on their faces is reward already.
My mother is 83 and she considers the Quest a life changer for her - we play mini-golf in VR once a week, with family members from all over the country. She looks forward to that all week. Yes it would be better to visit her, but if you're far away and can't just drop in then still being able to hang out with your grand kids on the other side of the country is priceless. Going white water rafting with everyone yelling and hanging on and having fun - she would never have been able to do that in real life.... but she got the feel of the experience and that is good :)
yea... all we can do is to point out that its not the case
I don't have a problem with VR, I have a problem with people thinking that a virtual reality internet is either practical or right around the corner. As great as it is for situations like you mention, it's very niche and I don't understand why Facebook and others think that what they're planning is really going to reshape society as the internet did.
Now NFTs and crypto, those I know don't have anything to do with VR and those I definitely have a problem with.
Could you have predicted that Facebook itself would reshape society the way it has?
Facebook doesn't require a powerful PC and/or a $300-$800 headset that completely blocks out the world and can give some users motion sickness to use. What surprised me most about Facebook and social media in general is not that they were successful, but that they revealed how awful so much of society is.
I think VR has big potential as shown above. Hospitals are centralized breeding and distribution hubs for MRSA, and all other sorts of constantly mutating pathogens. Also, many people are flown for hundreds of miles by helicopter to specialist care in big city hospitals. It makes more sense to decentralize and localize medical care with telemedicine via VR and telemedicine and telesurgery robots. It makes more sense to outfit homes with metabolic monitoring for all the inhabitants that has the AI chops to summon help so the specialized medicine and sterilize telemedicine robots can be rushed out to the scene in what becomes home health care cheap. So that home in essense become 24/7/365 private field hospitals outfitted with commodity priced medical AI. Ever see what an overnight stay in the hospital cost? And what do you get as a reward? Often bankrupcty, when allowed, it often isn't, and an often deadly staph infection.
I would like to see residency in nursing homes retired as a must that some much accede to and be more of a social choice some choose to make instead. Those at nursing homes and at home would have telemedicine, telesurgery, telemetabolic monitoring, robot mobility golfcarts and assitive robot mobility exoskeletons that can make the disabled living assitance independant. Not to get those things for them to ignore them, but to get those things for them to give them more independence then they have now, so they don't isolate to avoid feeling like they are burdensome to others.
And come to think of it, improved occupant safety in dwellings and in buildings of all types is something that all should constantly strive for even when 100% fit and very athletic. There is so much room for improvement in too many places.
If you know the desires of people you can predict anything, for society is shaped by people's desires. There are no one else to shape it. Well, cats maybe.![cheeky cheeky](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/tongue_smile.png)
Very interesting discussion, Folks! I'll weigh in with my two cents worth. First, I'm a disabled 63-year-old woman who has been disabled since age 40. My sister introduced me to World of Warcraft 14 years ago and that's how we do holiday gatherings. Seriously. I can't travel anymore and she lives three and a half hours away. My daughter, who is also disabled, can't drive more than maybe a half hour without getting sick. I quit driving this year.
The Oculus is out because I get migraines from something tight around my head like that strap that holds it on. But, when the VR headsets get cheaper and lighter, I will be wanting one!
Gaming definitely makes it easier to handle the constant pain I experience. Even as cartoony as World of Warcraft is, it's easy for me to immerse myself in it and the endless to-do lists for each of my nearly 50 characters. Of course, mere writing is also very immersive for me because I have a very active imagination. Ditto 3D art, whether in DAZ, creating a character; VUE 2016 creating a new world, or GIMP doing postwork. I plan to learn Unreal Engine in earnest when 5 comes out.
I have tried Second Life and enjoyed it, but I really want it to be more lifelike. I do enjoy visiting virtual museums and cities there!
But, the metaverse promises to be a boon for people like me who are housebound. I just hope headsets can be smaller soon so I can check it out. I want virtual museums and the ability to do research on ten screens or more at once! I just have one right now [my tv] and it's not enough.
I think the bulkiness of the headset is the biggest obstacle to someone like me. A lot of frail elderly would have trouble with the weight and size of them. I experimented with the Google Cardboard when it came out and just the weight of my cellphone got to me. I just transitioned to a desktop because most laptops are too heavy for me. The keyboard and mouse, I can handle.
The promise of the metaverse is availability of software for it. When there are many more types of things to do in it, people will migrate to it. Cost is also a big factor. There are 70% of us on fixed incomes who can't afford to shell out $300-800, and my new computer is a Christmas gift from my sister! I couldn't afford to replace one. My income is $12,000 a year, and that's Social Security. I'm not making anything much from writing or artwork. I'm telling y'all this just to paint the picture. But, when the technology gets better and the cost comes down, it has great promise.
My foray into Unreal Engine 4 opened up a whole new world of possibilities for me. For those of you who aren't familiar with it, Unreal Engine is a game engine that requires no programming skills. Everything is modular, so a bit of adjustment, and a novelist like me could introduce a landscape, buildings and furniture, characters, and act out the book! If it's not interactive, I don't need DAZ licenses for everything. And the programming is a whole lot simpler. There are plenty of tutorials.
Once I get something together, it would be dead easy to make it available for VR. Many realty companies and architectural firms use Unreal Engine to generate walk-throughs. With DAZ and Unreal Engine, I can produce VR even though I don't have an Oculus or other VR headset. Cool, huh?
There are lots of talented folks who make movies within Second Life or video games. The process is called machinima
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machinima
It's been around for ages. So, it's a logical next step that Unreal Engine is being used for virtual house tours and even virtual city tours.
https://www.unrealengine.com/en-US/spotlights/building-virtual-cities-and-digital-twins-with-unreal-engine?sessionInvalidated=true
if they had omitted the free NFT bit I would have shown more interest![frown frown](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/confused_smile.png)
I too use Unreal Engine and am interested in VR (just cannot afford a headset)
I just see a Secondlife economy emerging with Crypto instead of Lindens, like loot boxes and in game purchases it is just another way to relieve punters of their cold hard cash.
VR gambling will no doubt be the next big thing and I want no part of that.
I know nothing is free but I tend to want to lift others up in life not gain at their expense, I guess I am not a capitalist, I believe in fair trade, an honest wage for an honest job etc and support trade unions.![wink wink](https://www.daz3d.com/forums/plugins/ckeditor/js/ckeditor/plugins/smiley/images/wink_smile.png)
Exploitation of the serfs was never my thing.
