Not sure what all the hype was about. I am sticking with gen 8 for a while.

did you mean to post this in Art Studio or just start yet another thread?
Just start a thread. Not really a complaint or suggestion, just an early opinion.
Just installed Gen 9 about an hour ago, so I really haven't had time to form a good opinion yet, I'll be able to tell more as new characters and assets get released.
I am glad they brought back the unified figure. I'm drawn to cartoonier characters, but sometimes morphs for one gender don't have an equivalent in the other gender. For example Multi-man for Gen 3 male and Toon Larry for Gen 8 male. I love both figures, but it would be nice if I could get females that matched.
It will probably take me a while to start using them regularly, for the same reason it always takes me to start using a new figure: I have more stuff for the older
I heard that improvements to Gen 9 meant it had more expressive facial features. I've been looking forward to this, and after installing the Starter Essentials and fiddling with the face-related parameters, I'm not disappointed! So far though I don't have access to G8+ poses, which is a drawback.
Looking forward to trying G9 with my NPR workflow.
Cheers!
This works REALLY well. I set out to make toon characer A and found that I'd also made toon character B as well.
So far, my only two complaints are a lack of a child morph (which Genesis had) and the default female standing/walking poses mostly being set up for high heels.
I really dislike poses that don't come with flat foot poses.
Funny - even the male walking poses supports high heals....
I don't think they want anyone referring to anything as "male" anymore. Seems like they want everyone to refer to everything as masculine or feminine now.
In any event, I don't think the poses in the "masculine" folder look masculine (I hope they aren't meant to). I think it just means that they're apllied to the G9 figure with the "Base Masculine" shape dialed in.

I tested just G9 without V9 and am frustrated without morphs and expressions yet but played with what there was, mostly just assymetry morphs and pose controls for face. The first two are the same character one with female skin/morph, the other male with male skin but the same character, interesting..The second was using hair for V8 which loads sideways and you have to conform the hair as a full body suit (no option for hair) and it loses all its bones. You can't even load it so it's upright so you can manually adjust it with XYZ and parent! Also the worst thing are there is no lip or iris surfaces so you can't adjust colors or gloss to lips or irises which is something I do on most renders! I like most everything else about it and when there are morphs/expressions it will be much better but the lack of separate facial surfaces kills it for me. Hoping PAs come up with ways to fix these issues! My use of G9 will be very limited unless these things are addressed!
I changed the texture of the hair which looked too dark and dry to me but the skin textures are default. and use the default HIDRI that looks much better on G8 than on G9. Will definitely have to use different lighting but I was still using DS4.14 beta before this which I hope still works!
Quick partial render with default HDRI with more extreme tone mapping settings. It drives me crazy that I can't add gloss or color to lips! This really kills it for me!
Loaded fine on DS 4.15.0.2 and fast
No complaints while loading.
Playing with her a while and soon started missing morphpacks...
Poses were said to be better, but loading the "G9 Base Pose 02 Stretching G9F" left me wondering if that's the way she's supposed to bend...
And yeah, one needs to have SubD set higher before one can see the (basic) pokies in the preview
Child morph is always done by Zev for every genesis.
Yes, I agree the morphs that come with it are very basic. The basic female shape is also way more muscular looking than the original genesis iirc.
open your purse strings. that cash is about to be sucked out
What exactly were you expecting, especially in regards to this render?
In regard to the hair, I still use G8 hair, I just parent it when G9 is in the default pose and then I can still use all the settings for the hair :)
I agree with both these statements. Closeup might be a bit different. For regualr scene views it will hardly matter..none of it..hi res textures, better posing, better expressions... as overall not that evident from mid to farther renders, unless you rendering at 30x30 inches or something.
As its released G9 essentials, not enough to worry about overall. OR, its like going back to basics. Do your own expressions, although you can't with what we have. Do your own posing. Those included all feminine and wearing high heels. Do morphs in Blender or something as we don't have those either. V9 the first step. Seems a bit expensive for what you get with her too. I would never use the blothcy skin. There are no makeup selections. There is a product to buy some though, as well as a few expressions.
That didn't work for me. Hair loads sideways and it's really hard to manipulate it so it's upside right! When you do conform hair, it won't take textures, gets an error. Someone in another thread posted a workaround but it's REALLY complicated! I really hope a PA comes up with a workaround!
I tweaked a bit of a face change. Overall, I think she's a decent character, but wow me off my feet, naw. Looking forward to the morphs.
Okay, I need a bit of clarification.
The store page *claims* that V9 requires DS 4.21
Is this a *real* requirement, or is it just DAZ policy where it comes to store pages? What is the earliest version of Studio which will support G9? I'm in no hurry to install yet another version of Studio on my computer, and if the stated requirement is real, I will not be in a hurry to start collection components for a G9 library.
IF G9 will work acceptably in 4.15, then I'll pick up some of the early components while they are still on release discount.
For the record, the Character basics package which includes a wide range of eyelash and eyebrow colors and styles is something that I would have been rather pleased to have available for earlier iterations of Genesis. Being able to match whatever the wig colr you are using is a welcome feature, even if you do need to purchase it seperately. My only complaint is that it only comes in Iray.
There's some new features that works best in 4.21, not a Daz policy for store page :)
The base characters are, like all the previous Genesis generations, rather blah. The male character looks almost the same as the female character, the only difference being the texture maps have beard shadow. It's nice that there is a variety of skin colors to choose from but all the characters look the same. Since it is likely 3-6 months before the DAZ male characters start to show up, I hope that the basic morph packs (head, body, expression) appear soon. I would like to have something to play with in Genesis 9.
G9 render-time test. RTX 3080 ti.
Really? That expression is so good and the rest of her too. Of course if you were already buying the newest G8.1 characters and using the FACS with them you were already able to get close to something as good as your render there.
Can anyone elaborate on what features 4.21 is using that previous versions lack?
Because so far I cannot find what the difference is. I am running 4.16 and 4.21 at the same time and applying the same poses to Genesis 9 and I am struggling to see what is different. The sliders all appear to be present in both versions.
So unless something drastic is needed, I am sticking with 4.16 because I can render a cool 30-60% faster in 4.16 than I do in 4.21 (or 4.20). Yes, I wrote 60%, and I have posted the details in a thread in the past. I don't feel like nerfing my render speeds for Genesis 9. And of course...ghost lights.
If Genesis 9 truly did require 4.21, then I wouldn't bother touching it. At any rate, for anybody who is not using 4.21 for whatever reason, I don't think there is anything to fear for using something older. I did notice that G9 took slightly longer to load in 4.16. But that is offset by rendering drastically faster in 90% of my scenes.
They hype was Daz screaming "GIB UZ MUNNY!"
Works fine on DS 4.15
Thanks for this. I like my 4.15 version and have no interest in moving to the newer versions, but wanted to check out genesis 9
It will not work as designed, however, so don't complain if you use an older DS and get failures. You could always use the Public Build for Genesis 9 etc. without disturbing the general release 4.15
What's wrong with the lip textures in all those pictures? Looks to me, as if they aren't fitting properly?!?
You're right! I just noticed that on the bottom lip! That's one of the default G9F textures. I did play around a bit with a few available morphs and posing controls on the lips but this is not an extreme pose by any means!
