I tried G9 for about a minute. But since I'm still running 4.10 like a luddite it didn't go well. Personally I still use G3 with Default and Uber shaders for everything. Back in olden days I jumped from V/M4 to Genesis and moved from Poser to Daz. I skipped G2 because I was still converting all my 4 stuff to Genesis at the time. I did move to G3 when I learned how to convert V/M4/Genesis to G3. By the time G8 came out I was pretty set with what I wanted as far as characters and accessories. And I didn't feel like going through a whole nother round of converting all my assets to the latest generation's rigging since I was now at over 500 unique individuals who make up my Daz world.
What G8 characters I did end up with (there were a couple I found I liked) I immediately converted to G3 morphs, downgraded them to default shaders and reduced all textures to 1024x1024 at the max. Personally I don't have the patience for processer/gpu staggering attempts at photorealism. I'm happy with my rather unrealistic characters that I can render a 4k scene with 10 characters fighting a battle in a busy city landscape (that uses only diffuse and specular maps) in half an hour on a ten year old i7 in 3delight and move on to the next scene rather than my attempts to render a single more relistic character in iray that took hours to complete and came out looking creepy and waxy.
I guess at this point it's safe to say the technology is leaving me behind, and I'm okay with that. I hope people enjoy G9 and whatever comes after. I'll stick back here sipping mint julips with my herd of G3 friends and wave happily as the future races past us.
I'm interested in this, how was it done? Is there a tool or utility somewhere I missed? There are a very very few G8 characters I wouldn't ming converting go G1, and if I knew of way to get them to G3 I could take them the rest of the way.
NVM I just found a couple of utilities from Riversoft to convert G8F to G3F and G8M to G8M. Somehow I missed them whenever they came out, thanks for turning me on to the fact it is possible to do this. :)
Sickleyield has a tutorial on her deviant art here - https://www.deviantart.com/sickleyield/journal/Tutorial-Transferring-Character-Morphs-G1G2G3G8-409437916
I haven't used that one, mine is more like the instructions Redz put out years back. Basically this.
Load G3 and reduce its resolution to base with no subdivision.
Export it as an obj then clear the scene.
Load G8 (I used the Dev model here), then import your G3 .obj
Transfer utility using G8 as source and G3 .obj as target. Accept default Transfer Utility options.
Hide G8 and all its subpieces so only the G3 .obj is visible in the scene.
Save this as your scene, you can reuse it over and over.
To do the actual transfers now all you have to do is load your 'G8 to G3' scene. Load your morph and export to .obj. Since G3 is the only thing visible in the scene it should be the only thing that gets exported.
Load a G3, launch morphloader pro and select the exported morph (all my morphloader morphs I import to the same property group so I know where to find them later). In the parameters tab find your morph and set it to 100% Some extreme morphs may need to be smoothed out in something like Zbrush. But I've only had to do that once and it was pretty simple to smooth out some leg bumps. If that happens you can do whatever tweeks you need to in another app and reimport it again.
With your newly morphed G3 selected, make sure from the top menu to do Edit/Figure/Rigging/Adjust Rigging to Shape. Then go to your Parameters tab menu, go into edit mode. In the parameters find the morph again, right click on it and select ERC Freeze. (If you don't do these steps your morphed character can have wacky results later when you pose or use attachments).
You can then save the imported morph as a morph asset to be used over and over. I have had to tweek the irises and pupils a couple of times, but that's pretty easy to do in the sliders.
Enjoy and be sure to think happy thoughs about Sickleyield and Redz for their awesome hacks.
I've used this morphing V4, G1, G8 to G3 with pretty positive results. I have played around a bit with G9 and this doesn't work at all. Unless you want to see what G9 would look like after going though a pulp mill.
I've successfully converted characters from gen 8 to gen 9 but I would prefer to convert individual part morphs and without hd there just not the same depth of detail.
I was going to convert all my Toon Generations to Genesis 9 but then realized it would be silly as they are not realistic like yours.
I feel you! I love G8 and will be with her for many years I think lol.
i have a slow Mini PC. Genesis 8 runs slowly on my computer. Iray only skins take at least 10 minutes to render in bright light. I use Genesis 3 with 3Delight skins most of the time.
